What's this about the "Carry On" band?

I dunno, if you're already checking luggage, why can't you confine your carry-on to fit under the seat in front of you? I think the norm should just be "fits under a seat", reserving the overhead bins for all passengers who are either:
  • Not checking luggage (maybe indicated on the boarding pass),
  • In F and certain Elites, or
  • Paying an oversized carry-on fee

Tauso, being someone who never checks bags, I love your idea for selfish reasons :) However, I think implementing it might cause more people to carry on instead of checking bags. With the current bag checking fees, people are already disincentivized from checking, and further reducing what they can bring into the cabin will only further that.

"fee" fi fo fum - I smell the blood of Delta one.

This sounds like the wildly crazed attempt by DL to put 'tags' on every carry-on and check the tag at boarding. No tag? Bye-bye bag. After a howling mad response from both customers and staff, the program was put to sleep before it even saw the light of day.

Hope this isn't CO's version of the same thing.

This tagging is pretty typical for international airlines. I rarely get them and have never been questioned about my bag (the Red Oxx Air Boss). I do sometimes fear getting questioned at the jetway. Forunately, the bag will always fits the sizer; the issue for me will be weight. (7.5 kg is just silly...)

I flew out of EWR to ORD anyone who did not go through the EliteAccess line who's bag was larger then the sizer was forced to check the bag. Now that policy makes sense!! Allow enough room by blocking the infrequent traveler and allow the rushed business traveler and more probably high paying elite or first class passenger to go through. There is no incentive to force an EliteAccess passenger to check the bag as they are entitled to at least 2 bags at 70 LB. If this is the actual policy ^^

I hope the new policy doesn't give me problems with my rolling duffel... It measures 45 linear inches of course, but is almost 12 inches high which means it has to be put in sideways on some planes because the back of the overhead bin curves downwards.

Yes I should have stuck with the rollaboard, but I like this duffel a lot and it is within the posted restrictions on continental.com. It will definitely not ever fit in anyones sizer...

I guess I'll have to add a tape measurer to my packing list (maybe a cloth sewing one?)

There is a ruler sticker on the side of the sizer if you want to have it measured at the sizer. It is on the right side on the rear vertical member.

If that is indeed going to be the policy, then why would CO Insider not be willing to reply to the questions in this post? Seems this forum would welcome that news.

Maybe it's being saved for the Jeff and Larry PowerPoint show at the DO?

PowerPoint slide says "Question 9: luggage sizers"? What's up with that?" ;)

The "Carry On" band is an item that we use to show the GA's or perhaps the TSA that your bag has been approved to be carried on to the plane. In the past it has been used for the Central/South American flights where we are in an embargo situation, with respect to checked bags.

Perhaps he is waiting for feedback from the stations on how this is working or not working. Not all the stations have the sizing boxes available. SFO did not have one, as of last week.

I support the new carry-on limits..The the size of the carry-ons were getting way out of control..It sounds like everyones bags must fit into the sizer..elites included..@:-)

Just because the bag may "fit" in the overhead, does not mean it should fit in the overhead. Assembling the carry-on bag puzzle takes time. Smaller and fewer bags to contend with during boarding helps the boarding process go smoother and more quickly. Perhaps over time we can get to a shorter boarding time allowing planes to be turned more quickly.

Sounds like the opposite to me, as it should be.
