The sad thing is that I'll have to go back to 2 carry on's. Mrs SG found me a roller bag a while ago that holds my computer, work papers and clothing for 3 - 4 days and the bag fits, wheels out, in EVERY CO overhead compartment I've tried it in, including the 735 over 2AB. Of course, not one of the dimensions would fit the new sizer. I don't anticipate any problems in MSY but I can sure se them coming in EWR and IAH. Now I'll go to the backpack for the computer and papers and a compliant bag for the overhead. What a PITA. :td::td::td:

I saw a stray sizer in Terminal C this morning at IAH, and since I had my computer bag with me and my 22" roll aboard bag I normally travel with, I tried it out. The roll aboard fits the correct way, with the wheels out and handle in first (the wheel end is just a little too high to fit handle out, wheels in) on all of CO's mainline fleet. The only time on mainline CO it won't fit that way is in the F bins on the 733, 735, and 73G, and the most forward of the F bins on the 738 and 739. It fits on everything else.
But it won't fit the sizer. Not even close. As for my computer bag, it fit in the sizer, but just barely, and it wouldn't have fit if I was on a trip where I was carrying everything I sometimes need to bring for work. Yet even when it's packed full it still fits under most Y seats. The only ones where it's really an issue are the aisle seats with the large entertainment system control box under them. I don't know if this was one of the new sizers that SFO Gate mentioned or an old one. |

Whoa. I have trouble fitting a Mac Book Air in that quasi-compartment. |

The really bad news is that it isn't just CO. Moreover, the rules seem a bit difficult to deal with particularly for folks who have been using their "standard 22 inch bag" for years. That CO (among others) seems to be of the opinion that this is a good time to drive more revenue for their stupid fees because they aren't generating enough direct revenue just by existing just plain sucks. :td:
ETA: I just went and measured my "normal" bag. It is the Travelpro 22" expandable and it comes in at 22x9x14. And I have never been able to fit it in one of those size-wise devices. I guess I'll start bringing a tape measure with me on trips now. Great. Note that a lot of CO employees carry the same bag so its not fair that they can bring it on board and you might be asked to check your identical bag, not because it won't fit in the overhaed bin but because it doesn't fit their fee generating template. Of course CO employees are not subject to the one bag and one personal item rule either which is why so many of the bins in the front of the plane are full when you are one of the first revenue PAX to board. The non -revs and crew have claimed their turf first. The crew can't get off the plane until after all PAXs have departed so why can't their bags (already tagged crew) start off as gate checked to be returned to them on the jetway immediately after the the last PAXs deplane? |

I wouldn't be opposed to gate check/return for my bag but, I do keep my (FAA required) manual in there and if they lost my bag or sent it to bag claim, they could have a massively delayed flight by no fault of mine. |

Next time you measure it; measure the overall outside dimensions including anything that sicks out like wheels and handles. Unless your travel pro 22 shrank from being x-rayed too many times, you will find it to be well over 23" tall and almost 15" wide. No wonder it does not fit in the sizer template.

looks like I'll add a piece of paper on which I've printed the airline's specific restrictions, and a paper tape measure to my carry-on ... if it meets the specific measurements listed but doesn't fit the sizer I'm damn well not gonna check it.

I'd be a fan of the sizer if it didn't have the 1" shortage thanks to the tubing that was mentioned earlier. I bring a rollaboard that fits the dimensions and fits in the overhead bins just fine, but if passengers bring odd-sized stuff (hockey sticks, rolled up tubes, who knows what else) that fit the 45" rule but don't fit in the sizer, it then becomes a problem when they lay their stuff along the back of the bin and my rollaboard can't go all the way in. I also hate when people toss their coats in any which way - keep it in your seat until everyone has boarded, THEN if there's room go ahead and put it up top!

Bag enforcement is Needed
1. Reduce boarding time domestically, especially for the Kettles who like to pack their entire freaking house... its really REALLY annoying when they struggle to bring their motor homes down the aisle.
2. I always check my garment bag with no problems or delays. Every week from BWI to IAH to Bergstrom to EWR to MIA... No problems... 3. A GREAT many fellow FFs can't seem to understand how to travel light.... Military folks do it all the time.... Why cant we? 4. I firmly believe the flight crews should enjoy the big bag exception.... Everyone else check your bags and tote your carry ons. Most of us have to wait for the bloody Rental car bus anyway. Your bags will arrive in that time. Sheesh. |

They used to have a box at the gate to measure carry on items..Thank God they are bringing it back! I dont think anyone needs to bring on anything more than a purse or laptop/briefcase..If you need to bring a suitcase for crying out loud check it..This change is LONG overdue..THANK YOU CO! :)

I can't be the only one struggling to reconcile how so many people claim never/very rarely to check bags and yet use the likelihood of checked bags going missing/damaged as justification.
More generally, there's no doubt the checked bag fee is the main driver. A few people have expressed a hope for pragmatism and common sense in application of the rules, unfortunately that seems in short supply anywhere these days. Damage to luggage happens... if you are a FF, surely you can afford another piece of Samsonite (can't ye?). Luggage are made to be beat up... it serves to PROTECT precious cargo.... Invest properly.... |
I have never owned a rollaboard and must almost always check luggage due to the equipment/materials I travel with for work.
I would very much welcome a limitation on cabin luggage although in my four decades of flying I have seen the gate luggage sizer used once or perhaps twice, and that was on AA. Everything is in the application of the rules and I have a tough time seeing the GA's methodically checking everyone's carry-on in the sizer given the time constraints of boarding the a/c. |
I carry my entire office complete with accessories in my Targus laptop bag. If ya gotta carry a lot of papers, I would suggest either scanning them into PDFs. Also ask your companies for smaller version of the laptops you carry... I see folks carrying Desktop Laptop computers instead of real laptop computers.... This is a big difference when travelling... I know, I used to carry a desktop laptop computer....
Desktop Laptop is for desktops... not travel. |
I fly with a computer backpack that easily fits under the seat in front of me - I don't stow it in the overhead unless I'm sitting at a bulkhead and required to do so. It's squishy and conforms nicely to the underseat area.
I've stuck it inside some cubbyhole-type sizers, and it squishes to fit. But in a metal-frame open sizer, it is obviously too "thick" and sticks out of the sides. I'm hoping that this won't get me in trouble - it is smaller than most carry-on suitcases, flexible in shape, fits under the seat, but might not pass a sizer. And I'd be really unhappy to gate-check a backpack full of my electronics, business papers, and essentials. I assume the backpack-wearers will be ignored, but I'm wary of any systemwide (especially TSA-enforced) sizer policy. |

My view is that lost luggage with CO is a rarity thanks to their use of RFID technology... they scan bags on being checked in and scan bags on arrival.... GAs and BAs are aggressively scanning Bar Code thingys assigned to your bag which allows CO to precisely know where your bag is located.
Yes, I'm a FFer who claims to rarely check bags - and I really rarely do. I checked a bag coming home from Europe this past summer because of some shopping we did while there; it was carry-on on the way over. Prior to that it had been over a year and dozens of flights. We had a bag get misplaced on a trip to Alaska in '03 which was a problem because we were headed into the back-country. The CO folks were really nice, offering to deliver it to us as soon as it made it to ANC, but that wasn't going to happen while we were completely disconnected. As to the point of having to wait for the rental car shuttle or whatever other excuses have been tendered for reasons we all should just "suck it up" I will say that I actually almost never am waiting for anything when I land. I take my bags and am out of the airport directly, either to a cab/car service or train or on-site rental car. It has been quite a while since I've had to wait more than a couple minutes at the airport. If the airlines want us to be happy about checking bags then let them take on the responsibility of actually ensuring that the bags get where they are supposed to be, without being damaged or pilfered. The unwillingness of the airlines to accept fault and accommodate passengers appropriately when a bag does get misplaced is the reason so many, self included, are averse to giving them that chance. |
