Interior dimensions - inside the square steel - are 22"x14"x9" matching the new spec exactly. The 22" dimension is left-right, the 9" dimension is front-back and the 14" dimension is top-bottom. If the bag is a little long (22+) or wide (14+) it will be sortof OK in the sizer; it'll just stick out a bit. If it is at all thick (>9") it will not fit at all. The top and right are open in the "drawing" below.

Yesterday I saw something that made me smile, WIDE.
At the Term E security area (the one above C), CO GAs had the measuring tape out and checking bags... Aggressively... I aint kidding... The TSOs were impressed!! A few Kettles were pulled over to the side and were in the process of being redirected to check in (dunno if they ever went, I was in a hurry to catch my BWI flight). Good job CO! |

Yet it still remains unclear what the new sizers will actually accept. While the company has generally been up front and honest in the past, I see no reason to withhold judgment in this case until it can be verified what the implementation of the rules will look like, specifically with respect to the new sizers.
When the carrier started charging for bags, they also started screening at check in. Some people checking the size requirements were a bit overzealous. While the carrier has rules about carryon baggage, there is more latitude for FC and elite passengers. In fact, my experience is that there's been no change for elites. |

My question has always been, if I bring a pole that's 1" wide and 40" long on board, it clearly won't fit in the sizer. But it is within 45" length + width + height. That's an extreme example, but the fact is that there are bags that the 45" rule applies to that won't fit in the sizer. So what wins? Sizer, or 45" rule?

CO Insider: Now that these sizers are apparently being rolled out, could you please comment on how Continental intends to use them? I will be very, very upset if my 22" TravelPro bag that fits straight in the overhead is no longer allowed as a carry-on.

The sizers have suddenly appeared everywhere. They were all over IAH tonight, and there was even one at the gate when I landed at BTR.
|
My bag dimensions are: 22 x 9.5 x 14 inches . I wonder, you think I could squeeze that bag through the sizer?

The silence is deafening... I did not see a notice that said "The Insider Will Be Out", so I can only assume that he does not wish to comment. I think I will hold off on any more 2009 ticket purchases until I have this answer. I hope I get it soon so I can comp my status over to Delta if I get the wrong answer. They are more convenient for much of my travel, but I have been sticking with Continental since I had so much invested already (status, miles, etc.)

I did not bring my regular carry on because I flew on an RJ this trip (first trip since the new carry on policy started). I will not be happy to go and buy a new carry on (although I can use the one I brought with me, it does not have all the compartments and padding the one I typically take does) and look forward to seeing if CO will give elites a little slack.

You know what would be great - instead of sending Plats stickers this year  they should send us free* (or coupons for reduced cost) "approved" carry-on luggage. I bet there's a luggage manufacturer or two out there that would love to have an in with their customer base. *Yes. It's a long shot. But, the power of suggestion is a powerful thing. ;) |
Overhead racks stuffed!
Was on yesterday's full 757 Flt. 811 (EWR-IAH). Some passengers obviously had carry-ons much larger than the sizer! I think I heard the fiberglass compartment cracking :D as the oversized bags were forced into the limited space. Even one bag had to be turned sideways as it wouldn't fit otherwise. The FA's did an excellent job ^ in trying to get as many carry-ons as possible into the overheads, re-arranging and carrying some pieces from the back of the plane to forward compartments and then telling passengers the bin number.
I am definitely in favor of the restriction on grossly oversized carry-ons which will not fit lengthwise into the overheads! |

I don't think anyone in this thread is arguing this point. The problem is that many, many, many bags that fit just fine are now being removed from the allowed list based on the new policy. That's what sucks.
My computer bag that can be squeezed into a Saab 340 overhead, and fits just fine in both the CRJ and ERJ bins, won't fit into the sizer correctly. Yet it's still below the 45" rule too. |
"carry-on" band
I noticed that a CO "Carry On" dated adhesive backed band was placed thru my 21" bag handle before I entered the TSA screening at terminal E IAH. Wonder if the bag was just "eye sized" before the band was applied?
