Funny, but they don't even have that here. Or anything else that's really the Cajun/creole cooking the area is known for. There's a very large owner/operator of Marriott family hotels that this hotel is part of. I've stayed in half a dozen of their locations over the last couple of years, and they all appear to have a completely standardized menu. It's nothing exciting, but not bad. Just good, reliable food, that's overpriced for the convenience of being able to eat it in your room while you watch TV. But hey, work's paying, and lunch was cheap thanks to the severe weather we had here right before lunch that knocked out power all over the area of the city I was working in.

Thanks for your kind words all, but luckily this time it is just the simple flu - the scare was 2 years ago. The CDC was worried because I went through LGW after the Virgin Nigeria flight had landed, plus another potential trouble spot in FCO. It was an interesting experience to say the least!

ALCO - have you gotten your shots in order?

I had a crappy day as well. Racquetball was previously delayed an hour so I did get some PT in (and abused my opponents). Came home and threw four sausages in a pan - opened two beers simultaneously and only half of one made it to the saute ...

I once had to deal with the CDC to find out if someone had monkey herpes.

That's so not right.

ALCO is actually less of a grocery store and more like a really cr@ppy regional version of Wal-Mart, only not even as nice as Wal-Mart, and the stores have a much smaller footprint than even a non-Super Wal-Mart. They're all over far West Texas, especially in some smaller, more remote towns, but also around 20 other states.

I'll admit I'm watching the last episode of ER. I used to be a huge fan of the show, and still watched it occassionally in recent years, although I had become rather apathetic about it, and hadn't seen an episode since around late September of last year. But I'm glad to see they brought back the original opening, and credited all of the major characters who have come and gone. Nice flashback to the good old days there. Hoping this turns out to be a really great ending for such an iconic show, even if the show had faded so much in recent years.

Overheard at dinner tonight...

A discussion of various weed killer brands and the marketing opportunities associated with them (boring) and a debate between the relative values of the EK and VS departure facilities for F/UC pax at their reapective hubs (entertaining).

I agree with you. This was a great show that really changed TV, arguably for the better.

Even better. ALCO, selling cheap goods to fund his Russian rust-bucket escapades. :p

For shame.

I hate to say this, but I once had to buy socks at the Alpine, TX ALCO. I somehow managed to forget to pack them, and arrived there after the Beall's (the "nice" clothing store in town) had closed. ALCO was still open for about 10 minutes and I ran in and purchased three of what must have been the world's cheapest pairs of navy blue socks. They were of such poor quality that I didn't even bother packing them for the trip home; they were tossed in the trash at the end of the week. But they got me through three days with the client and were a better choice than the white socks I had with me. And I can't complain too much, as I think the three pairs cost me all of $3.75, plus tax.

Hartmann Apr 2, 2009 7:21 pm

Alpine has one thing going for it over the rest of the little towns around it, the coffee shop, La Trattoria.

Great story though ssullivan :)

I vaguely remember that the box has, in the past, discussed bacon. And discussed lube.

So I think it is appropriate that they can be combined.

:rolleyes::p:D^:cool:

I love La Trattoria! Great little place, and something you'd never expect to find there. When I was working Alpine we'd head over there for lunch at least once a week. That place has grown a lot too; a couple of years ago she was operating in a tiny space that had seating for about four customers inside and about 10 more out on the patio.

Alpine's got some great other little places to eat, too.

I miss working down in that part of the state. It was always a major PITA to get there and get home, but always a nice break from the usual.
