Got back a little while ago from doing a wire transfer, which, now I discover, was only some authenticating paperwork away from being do-able online. Stopped for a bite to eat, and then remembered I needed to go to a certain headshop and buy tobacco.

In no hurry with rush impending, I started chatting with the manager about the general impact of last year's huge tax rise, which has caused cessation of importing my preferred brand. I said I can still see it available online in London, but tobacco imports are very restricted, and it's a long way to go to buy something that everyone says will end up killing me anyway.

There was also a woman sitting on a stool behind the counters, maybe half my age plus one or two, to whom I had paid no attention. When I made the comment, she said "I'd really love to go to London." Looked at her for a couple seconds, and asked "do you have a passport?" "Yeah, I do," smiling.

So I told her about FlyerTalk, and to start reading the Mileage Run forum, where she might be able to find some really good fares. I paid for my tobacco, and left. It's always satisfying to maybe help someone out by turning them on to FlyerTalk.

According to ESPN, Jamie Moyer made his major league debut 24 years ago tonight. And he's currently taking care of the Yankees.

+1. The guy's jaw/neck damn near fell apart due to cancer.

He probably is nice. But nice people can also become addicted to celebrity. And no, he does not need a working jaw to write. But if that were my predicament, I'd write, do interviews via email, and become a recluse. There's no way he's hurting for cash to the point that he needs to be doing appearances.

For what it's worth, he certainly does do a lot less public stuff than he used to. For a while, the guy was a recluse. It's really only been in the last 6 months or so that he's made any kind of significant public appearance. If he's comfortable enough in his own skin (such as it is) to go out in public now, more power to him.

Because there's still a life to be lived?

I have done this several times. To my knowledge none of them have taken me up joining, but hopefully they lurk and learn.

I am home after a  commute. It took me 20 minutes to make my normal 8 minute drive.

I feel your pain. My normal 50 minute drive went to 90+ this morning thanks to two trucks wrecking.

Then I have no problem admitting that he is mentally stronger than I. If it were me, I don't think I could go on as a public figure.

You need one of these:

I put one in at my house a year ago. Can VPN and control remotely. :D^

Programable thermostats are great, well once you get done with programming them (yes my AC is set to 80 when I'm not home) I know I can't use that model since I have a two stage system. Too bad many thermostat directions don't tell you how to install the jumpers to make it work. I sometimes wonder if mine runs on slow these days with the current one.

I think it's safe to assume he's mentally stronger than all of us teh box combined.

In other news -- if today were Tuesday I'd be eating a taco. But, it's not. So I'm off to procure a Greek salad.

Probably even ten years ago, he would not have survived. I wonder how much better the remediation and survival will be ten years from now.

This has been my method as well.

Quality of life? Trying to enjoy the things he can?

Sorry, but if I was in his condition, I'd be out there too. Why sit at home waiting to die if you don't have to.
