It pains me that my employer still has our computers on XP, with no announced plan to upgrade.

Work, home and netbook all xp, reason to change=none

They do that all the time; conductors on Acela are quite vigilant about ticket collection and ensuring that passengers are ticketed for the proper train becaue Acela costs so much more than the Regional.

BWI sucks to wait around in. If I find myself in a situation where I arrive early, I usually end up grabbing a bite to eat in the "healthy" cafe located landside in the hallway behind the ticket counters between C and D, then go up to the indoor observation area located between B and C. Next time you're departing BWI, you should check it out, if you haven't already. It's like a quasi-lounge with great views of the runways and comfortable seating, but aiport contract employees and families with children tend to congregate there.

I'll have to check those out. I remember hearing years ago about the observation area but never have been to it.

You're really lucky that you've begun flying CO out of BWI only recently, because it has only been since last year or so that there has been an elite security line in D.

Monday the elite line wasn't open, but they weren't very busy. It took no more than 10 minutes to clear the checkpoint, even with a woman in front of me who was wearing too much metal and traveling with way too much crap, and was terribly slow in dealing with all that.

:oh does that ever sound nice (although the wind is howling in MN I'm watching the loon cam) so you might be enjoying a brisk breeze too.

They would be if Amtrak were a private industry.

The Acela is managed by a private, for-profit entity and is separate from the basic government-subsidized Amtrak. Still owned by Amtrak, of course.

Doubtful, considering he was born in 1971.

The sad part about security at BWI is that there's really no room to get around someone who is taking too long. I vividly remember almost missing a flight at EWR due to long lines downstairs for checked bags. I got to the C-2 checkpoint with about 25 minutes til pushback, and there was a guy ahead of me who was dragging in everything he was doing. Nice and slowly untying his shoes, blah blah blah. I was in a rush and the square footage was there to do so, so I went around him and threw my stuff on the belt. Neither TSA nor Mr. Slowpoke seemed to care.

Then I guess there was no possible way he escaped a maximum security stockade, nor could he possibly still be wanted by the government and surviving as a soldier of fortune.

IAH-BWI upgrade for Friday morning just cleared. :D

It's pretty sweet, actually. They have a portion of a 747 fuselage and cabin with old-school J seats and IIRC a 727 or DC-9 cockpit behind glass. Also, some wall displays concerning ATC and commercial aviation in general. Only downside is that it is landside and the occasional noise/barking from off-duty airport contract workers. If you're lucky, it will just be you and some airline crew members up there.

Get used to it. That is the typical BWI passenger, and you'll always be stuck behind one unless the WTMD line to the far, far right in D is open and the Kettles don't notice (or the TSA person allows you to go into the crew line); That, or a person with a small child with stroler, baby bag, tons of metal, car seat, etc. I've never seen an aiport where so few people even know that you have to take your shoes off to clear security. One reason the checkpoints are slow is that people just leave metal in their pockets and, as a result, get pulled aside for secondaries. Half the agents are busy just doing secondaries.
