Chartering a CO flight

I may be thinking way outta my mind here, but here's what I was thinkin'

I'm getting married later this year in ICT (Wichita). All CO flights from IAH are on RJs. I'm gonna be having enough family flying up from Houston to fill one of those flights completely. Would I have to inquire with ExpressJet/Chatauqua about chartering one flight to accomodate all the guests, or can this even be done?

I often charter planes, flying film crews around the country. Usually jets run twice the price per passenger as turbo props.

The general rule of thumb for jets is about $1,500/hour for a small jet (up to about 8 passengers) and about the same for a prop that can hold up to 19 passengers.

For a jet that can hold up to 20 or so passengers you're looking at $4,500 to $7,000 per hour.

Are you going to need a roundtrip? And if yes, are you going to keep the plane & crew in Wichita for the duration of your wedding? This can also get expensive. Or you'll have to pay for them to deadhead back to IAH, unless they can round up some one-way business back to Houston.

I would call around, I'm sure you can do much better with a charter company based at IAH.

A good place to start is to call the General Aviation phone at IAH and ask for some recommendations.

I've never been a fan of the group discounts on airlines. They're often a % discount off not the lowest fare bucket. In other words, booking the tickets straight up off the website is often cheaper (even if people pay different rates, as you scoop up the lowest buckets).

Agree...

I think its better to fly everybody on whatever available commercial flight
booked in advance.

Charter or group sales would come out lot expensive in most case.

Absolutely agreed. I would only charter if there is no commercial option available. Chartering will always be more expensive. We do a lot of chartering for our film crews, only because we need to get a big group to a small airport where the commercial service simply doesn't provide enough seats.

We could bring people in a day early but the day rates we pay our crew are far more expensive than the cost of chartering a flight.

On the other hand, given the size of the wedding group and the number of seats available IAH to Wichita, there may simply not be any choice.

If you have to charter, I would go with a big turbo prop, that's always going to be cheaper, even though you'll be paying for more flight time.

The key is to fill whatever plane you charter to the max.

Charter

Charters are not always the best way to go when trying to move a large group. I had looked into doing a roundtrip from LGA to DCA on CO on a 737-300 and it was $34,291 or $30,294 out of EWR.

Hyperthetically if you were able to find tickets for $200 each roundtrip - that would equal to $22,800. Thus not a savings to charter an aircraft. I am sure there is a group discount if you do this several times a year.

Why would you fly from LGA to EWR (or vice-versa)?

Hmm ... you're talking about cash. Wonder if one could "charter" an entire flight using OnePass miles? If the "value" of a mile equates to somewhere between 1 and 2 cents per mile, that'd mean about 2 to 3 million miles ...

I don't know the cost, but I imagine this would be a more memorable experience than renting a 737.

I know ExpressJet charters and has several ERJ 145s for charter.

Other options may be a 58 seater 727 from Champion Air, or even someone like Miami Air. They offer a much better charter product than anything CO/COex can provide.

It's best to shop around.
