CO 90 Diverted to CLE

A passenger onboard CO 90 from LAX to EWR just called to say they were diverted to CLE after the aircraft was in a lengthy holding pattern near EWR. The plane apparently ran low on fuel and diverted to CLE.

Any idea why it would go to CLE and not BOS or someplace closer? Is there something even more unusual going on at EWR, besides bad weather and the terrorist warning?

Looking at the map on flightaware.com, they were put on a holding pattern over Toledo, OH, just before CLE. Not close to EWR.

Thanks for the clarification--latest update from that flight is that passengers deplaned at CLE and given option to overnight in CLE or continue if/when flights to EWR resume. CO90 eventually becomes the EWR-TLV flight but maybe not tonight.

Same flight # but the EWR-TLV flight is on a different aircraft a 777, so the EWR-TLV flight itself won't be affected

CO16 LAX-EWR also went to CLE.

Probably more flights diverted too.

That's what I was thinking too. Poor Newark: it's had a rough day. I wonder will they ferry a widebody up there tomorrow to bring all those stranded passengers back to EWR.

We had some pretty nasty thunderstorms here in Houston this afternoon, too. Poor Houston.

A friend of mine is a CoEX FA and she was the FA on a flight to EWR that has diverted to Philly and has been there about 1.5 hours in the penalty box.

Both 16 and 90 have made it to EWR.

Well, you should feel for us in LA. We're suffering through 90 F weather and 50% humidity with hardly a cloud in the sky--we're suffering here too!
