It's doable. If you go to the Continental website and check under "Frequent Flyer," you can select the option "use miles," then click on "upgrade rewards." You'll get the information you need.

Embedded in the table is the information that you need. You can also call Continental on the toll-free number provided to see if there are upgrade seats available.

You may be looking at a page entitled Types of Upgrade Rewards. That $450 applies for BusinessFirst, which is Continental's product on international travel. If you're flying overseas--and on a Q fare--you do have to pay a $450 each way. I understand that this fee is refundable if the upgrade does not clear. I have never used miles for a domestic upgrade. I've read the chart on the link provided earlier. My suggestion would be to call the One Pass Service Center to find out what, if anything, they can do for you.

You don't say whether you have elite status with CO and you don't say what your route is. If you're not an elite then there is no way you can upgrade a Q fare on a domestic route with miles.

You can use miles to upgrade on domestic...if you were elite you would have a chance at the comp. upgrade (depending on status). Yes, $450 for the international upgrade is insane.

Can't use miles to upgrade on a Q fare if you're not elite. According to CO:

Select Economy Fares Upgrade Rewards allow you to upgrade to First Class, Business Class or BusinessFirst with the purchase of most published adult Economy fares. Certain Economy fares require that additional fees be collected when an upgrade to BusinessFirst is confirmed. Select Economy Fares Upgrade Rewards are capacity-controlled, and standby at the airport is not permitted. Non-Elite OnePass members traveling on Y, H, K, N or B fares are eligible for mileage-deduct upgrades within or between the 48 contiguous U.S., Alaska and Canada.

It's insane because it's too low If you can get it, on a Q fare, an upgrade for $450 is a real bargain.

If you are non-elite, flying domestically, on a Q fare, nope. Sorry.

AA is much better about this. I just used miles from my Aadvantage account to upgrade my wife on a domestic itin with an "S" fare, which is about as low as you can go on AA. Neither of us are elites with AA. And I was able to do this more than two weeks before the flight.

I assume CO and NW are more restrictive to make sure more seats stay available for elite upgrades. As a NW elite and an AA non-elite that sounds good to me.

Remember as a NW elite you are able to use your WP miles to upgrade any CO fare as well
