Which is what I'm trying to do, book a direct flight (IAD-MSP)..

Actually, that does make sense. When putting together an itinerary, if you want to look at the schedule one flight at a time rather than all at once from origin to destination/stopover points, you have to be able to see the code-shared flights as a "non-stop". Same thing at the airport monitors. LGA-DTW flight CO????, which cannot be booked like that unless you change planes in DTW.

Glad someone mentioned this; I had wondered about it too. FWIW, here's an observation that may be a useful piece of the puzzle...to someone sharper than I:

I often get lots of codeshare options to come up *on CO.com* when searching by "best price". IIRC, these have included itineraries that were all codeshare. But then trying to (opportunistically maximize my miles by taking that info and moving to) search by "schedule" returns only the CO metal flights out of all those previously shown at the low fares. Hm.
