EWR Gate Agents??????

EWR is the only airport that I consistently miss upgrades at the gate as a Platinum, 1st on the waiting list, with 2 or 3 R seats still open. I find this information out politely by the check in agent, but I am consistently snubbed at the gate with the "we don't give out that information" line. Then watch as upgrades are given to local frequent flyers familiar with the gate agents names.

I fly out of many different cities and I have to say that EWR seems A-typical concerning gate agents and upgrades. Any similar experiences? Or am I crazy!

Best explanation for why those 'local frequent flyers' are 'familiar with the gate agents' names' and got upgraded ahead of you is because they're CO employees.

Do you really think that GA's have all that much control over upgrades anymore? I think the standby list is computerized and queues people up accordingly. I think the GA can manipulate the list, but it sets them up for having to explain their actions if they do.

I myself have been told "I'm the next one in line" and then a battlefield upgrade given to someone else... so I know the feeling- but I don't think the GA's have all that much to do with the order anymore....

Agreed. And all it would take is a Full Y or paid First passenger from another flight to try to get onto your flight to displace you as a "next in line" Plat.

Yes, but you just can't beat the pleasant demeanor of EWR based GAs.

I believe it runs by computer if they choose that option, but I believe that they have full control in case of extenuating circumstances, etc. What makes me suspicious is the consistency of my experience there and the GA's insistence on keeping me in the dark concerning my queue.

Concerning your battlefield upgrade quote CraigS, are you giving a general example or specific to EWR?

Channas point is well taken, but this happens even when there are 2 Rev seats 1 hour prior to departure. Do you fly out of EWR often channa?

Out of EWR, no. Through, yes.
