Yikes, 25K at $0.90 is... $22,500!
Oh, wait, you probably mean $0.09. :D But at that price 25K is still $2,250. Seems like a lot of $$ to spend buying EQMs. But I guess if it saves you the time of doing 5 transcon MRs, it could make sense. Who the hell knows how the whole CO/UA thing is going to get tossed around next year. I figured I'd get it while I could. |
Just curious- What's preventing someone from buying a refundable flight EWR-LAX, doing the maximizer and then canceling the flight a day later?

Never mind, found the answer myself :)

I’m considering the Elite Maximizer for a trip in a few weeks. I just purchased the ticket at United.com using my MP #. Then called UA and changed to my OP #. Called Continental, they cannot access the record and tell me that there is no CO confirmation code. I cannot access the reservation at Continental.com.
It’s United # 0891 (JFK-LAX) and when pricing the same flight on CO it shows as CO # 0891 (“operated by United…”). Does this mean that there is not a separate CO flight # and thus I’ll not be able to use the Elite Maximizer? Does it only work for flights with different CO and UA flight #s? Am I missing something? Thank you.

You have to buy the ticket on CO.com (I believe) in order to get the prompt for the maximizer.

It only works if you have the ability to pull up the ticket on co.com, and it has at least one CO leg.

Not necessarily. As long as you have a CO metal somewhere, then you can use the CO confirmation code and buy it on CO.com.
If you buy it via UA and UA metal, then you are almost SOL. You can purchase a CO ticket, purchase the CO max miles, and then cancel the ticket within 24 hours.

To be more correct; the ticket needs to be 005 ticket stock...then no matter what the metal is you can buy maximizer miles.

In my experience, on a mixed-metal itinerary purchased on UA.bomb with some SO segments, when I pull up the itinerary on CO.com, CO would only sell me Maximizer EQMs based on 2x or 3x the CO segments in the itinerary, not the UA segments. Has others' experience been different?
Next question. UA metal, JFK-LAX-JFK PS service. I know UD upgrades are not applicable to PS flights but I have been “operationally” upgraded on PS flights once or twice. Which gives me the best chance for an operational upgrade, my Prem Ex # or my OP Gold #? |

Someone just made a credible claim to having bought 25,000. That's a start. :D (And it was at the higher price point of 9cpm, not even the 7cpm level the previous discussion was based on.)

It was down to $0.085 per EQM just now.

Thanks all very much. I just purchased the exact same ticket at CO.com (using OP #) and cancelled the UA.com ticket. Now I can see the Maximizer options which are available to me, RDM at $0.03 each and EQM at $0.09 each. (Data point: Only differences in the tickets are UA 0891 vs CO 0891 and 016 vs 005 ticket first 3 digits.) Thanks again. FT is terrific.

This might be a naive or noob question, but I just jumped on the Elite Maximizer wagon a couple weeks ago.
I will be a little short of 1K at the end of the year, and looking into ways to get there - I've gathered from the discussion that you DON'T ACTUALLY HAVE TO FLY the segments to get and keep the EQM purchased thru Maximizer, correct? Secondly, if I do purchase additional EQM, then once I fly the itinerary, are the BIS miles posted as EQM? Specific example: Next week I am flying PHX-IAH-MSY round trip. The journey is 1,314 miles each way. I bought 3X EQM and 5256 EQM have already posted to my account. Once I fly, will my EQM balance remain at 5256? Or will it be the 5256 that I purchased, + 1314 + 1314 for the BIS miles each way as well? Thanks all, appreciate the help :-) |

The BIS miles will post as EQM once you fly them in addition to the miles you already purchased. |
