I bought a few K at 7c/mi, but I still need 2K more...

I should have bought more earlier! Ugh.

If you absolutely need the miles are definitely not going to fly, just buy them now and be done with it. I think the odds of it going back down to 7c are pretty low.

TommyC80 offers sound advice. Take it. And don't look back.

"Good value for some people" is a fact that I proved/demonstrated above. Your disagreement suggests that it is not good value for any people, which is ridiculous in light of the facts. It may not be good value for you but I was not writing about you.

ANY reservation - even award tickets - that is visible on co.com will have the maximizer option.

I just pulled up a reservation booked on .bomb and holding my UA MP#. It doesn't show in my regular reservations list on co.com. I imported it via the CO PNR and last name (it does have a CO flight in it) and I'm given the option to buy miles.

Correct -- you can actually change your information and add your CO OP # for it to work.

I’m considering the Elite Maximizer for a trip in a few weeks. I just purchased the ticket at United.com using my MP #. Then called UA and changed to my OP #. Called Continental, they cannot access the record and tell me that there is no CO confirmation code. I cannot access the reservation at Continental.com.

It’s United # 0891 (JFK-LAX) and when pricing the same flight on CO it shows as CO # 0891 (“operated by United…”).

Does this mean that there is not a separate CO flight # and thus I’ll not be able to use the Elite Maximizer? Does it only work for flights with different CO and UA flight #s? Am I missing something?

Thank you.

You have to buy the ticket on CO.com (I believe) in order to get the prompt for the maximizer.

It only works if you have the ability to pull up the ticket on co.com, and it has at least one CO leg.

Not necessarily. As long as you have a CO metal somewhere, then you can use the CO confirmation code and buy it on CO.com.

If you buy it via UA and UA metal, then you are almost SOL. You can purchase a CO ticket, purchase the CO max miles, and then cancel the ticket within 24 hours.

Just bought myself 25K at $0.90. I've got a trip planned on Wed that'll get me to Platinum.

I'm wondering if it's worth it to do 1K status. Especially this late in the year.

icydog Oct 16, 2011 6:27 pm

Not if you have a CO President's Plus card!

It means 4 one-way flights (as long as you pay for them). This is probably put in place to prevent those who achieve elite status by just spending money on their card.

If you have a CO or UA Pres Plus card this goes away

If the regional and SWU upgrades are of value to you then and only then should you consider buying this many miles.

To be more correct; the ticket needs to be 005 ticket stock...then no matter what the metal is you can buy maximizer miles.

Yikes, 25K at $0.90 is... $22,500!
Oh, wait, you probably mean $0.09. :D But at that price 25K is still $2,250. Seems like a lot of $$ to spend buying EQMs. But I guess if it saves you the time of doing 5 transcon MRs, it could make sense.

Someone just made a credible claim to having bought 25,000. That's a start. :D (And it was at the higher price point of 9cpm, not even the 7cpm level the previous discussion was based on.)

In my experience, on a mixed-metal itinerary purchased on UA.bomb with some SO segments, when I pull up the itinerary on CO.com, CO would only sell me Maximizer EQMs based on 2x or 3x the CO segments in the itinerary, not the UA segments. Has others' experience been different?

EsquireFlyer Oct 16, 2011 7:12 pm

I just bought myself 1,825 EQM on the Elite Maximizer at $0.09. Cost $165, but I had to take my medicine sooner or later.

I was 1,823 EQM short of 1K (after counting my other travel this year, booked but not yet flown). So I found a CO flight CLE-LAS for 1,825 miles and bought an Elite Maximizer based on that segment. :)
