As a Plat, the changes don't effect me. I share the concern, however, that the lowest common denominator has struck again.

On CO and UA, if am only changing the date, it is free even as general member. On DL or US, that would be a $150 fee (same routing, same flight #s, just different dates).

CO/UA is not lower in every category - but overall, they compare favorably.

For most of us as US based flyers, it is not a valid alternative. You'd lose one of the most highly sought after elite program benefits - domestic upgrades. Additionally, I know many of the Euro FFPs charge fuel surcharges on award bookings; several hundred $ on long-hauls. Not sure if SK does that too, but it's 50 times worse than the fees we're discussing here, which many people won't pay at all, ever. @:-)

Exactly. Recently, I couldn't confirm an LH EU segment in C on a US award at booking. Of course availability opened up later, but US wanted to charge $150 to reissue the ticket. Worse, the agent blamed it on Star Alliance membership rules.

They do, unless flight is operated by SK.

Last year I had to redeem BA miles for my parents, and had to pay $300 per ticket for a "reward" ticket for travel from IAH to MAN. But BA and LH and other European carriers have a better in flight service. Perhaps they are charging for the better service.

$300 for free booze? I don't think so.
