I've gotten E+ at the gate once. My question: if they can see your status at on-line check-in and offer free checked bags then why can't they see your status when choosing seats!?

Dear Mr Clincher:
I regret to see that you have cancelled your reservation on confirmation
#XXXXX and requested a refund. I do understand your preference for
sitting far forward in the cabin and your frustration that there is a
fee to sit in the Economy Plus section, even for our Star Gold and
Platinum Continental members.
I suspect that this policy might change once the merger of Continental
Airlines and United Airlines is completed, Mr. Clincher. Obviously,
we ourselves do not know yet how this situation will be worked out. I
ask for your patience as the merger plans continue. We are all looking
for the added benefits to our customers to be resolved.
We look forward to the ability to offer preferred seating to you at no
extra cost, Mr. Clincher. Your safety, business, and satisfaction
are very important to us.
I had cancelled the UA tickets and purchased a CO ticket solely for the better choice of seats. Until they get it "worked out" I'll stay with what works best. At least they acknowledge it is a problem to be resolved.

E- swap? Hardly! I've had 100% exit row seating (usually a middle seat left open), 70% EUA this year on CO.

I'm about 10 for 12, and the two non-starters were because there were only middle seats left. Never had a UA GA be anything less than pleasant about it... then again I always emphasize that I know it's not a formal benefit yet, but I'm CO G and I'm told if I ask nicely there might be a chance at E+... etc. Invariably I get a "no problem."
