Are the media leaving Galveston?

I suspect they will leave pretty soon (I did see one guy reporting near the seawall a few minutes ago). Beachfront properties are already being damaged, and city streets are taking on water.

If they don't they're even less intelligent than I thought. They'll probably leave and come back first thing in the morning by boat or helicopter.

Floodwaters surged into Galveston Island neighborhoods Friday morning with the center of Hurricane Ike still more than 200 miles from landfall.

On the Bolivar Peninsula, northeast of Galveston, the Coast Guard was rescuing stranded motorists by helicopter.

A U.S. military official told CNN that Texas anticipates 37,000 people may need to be rescued.

Texas has asked for help, and the active-duty military has 42 search-and-rescue helicopters on standby, the official said.

On Galveston Island, waves washed for blocks inland, the beginning of a storm surge that forecasters warned could reach up to 22 feet and bring "certain death" to anyone who remained in Galveston Bay homes.

The weather service painted a vivid picture in its warning of the destruction it expects: a towering wall of water, possibly up to 22 feet high, crashing over the Galveston Bay shoreline as the brunt of Ike comes ashore. That wall of water could send floodwaters surging into Houston, more than 20 miles inland. Video Watch CNN meteorologists track Hurricane Ike »

"All neighborhoods ... and possibly entire coastal communities ... will be inundated during the peak storm tide," the weather service warned. "Persons not heeding evacuation orders in single family one- or two-story homes will face certain death."

When did TV weatherpeople become such bad role models for children?

"I'm standing at the seawall, where no one should be, in the mandatory evacuation area, where the Mayor said all smart people should be out of at least six hours ago."

3rd grader: "Mommy, I've picked my career goal. When I grow up, I want to be an idiot like that guy on TV in the yellow raincoat."

The doom, gloom, blood and guts CNNs of the world will not be happy till they get that ratings boosting live shot of a 50 foot wall of water coming over that seawall and drowning their crew.

Hint: They got these things called webcams. Cheap and easy to use. Put dozens all over the seawall if you want live video of the storm. Then leave. Have your weatherman provide live commentary on the video. From your studio in Kansas.

Just watched Geraldo reporting live from the sea wall at Galveston on Fox News.
It's early days yet so whilst a few waves are crashing over it's going to be a number of hours before the surge really hits.
There also looked to be a couple of fairly solid tall buildings nearby so I presume the crews are rigged up with uplinks and generators.
Worryingly, there are reports of large numbers of people staying put and ignoring warnings of what could be a large area of flooding.

The problem is webcams are powered by electricity and when that goes out due to flooding there are no pictures.
TV news reporters are no more stupid than anyone else and take steps to ensure their safety - but their job does put them in danger occasionally which is why they earn good money.

Like the entirety of Galveston Island being underwater, perhaps? That would qualify.

Some areas of town have received an additional 3" since midnight. All schools are closed, state of emergency declared, lots of street closures. Has absolutely nothing to do with the hurricane. BTW, Lubbock averages about 18" a year.

....

Emergency declared in Lubbock? That's incredible! Lubbock is on the high plains and the regular weather report is dust, more dust, and dust storms. Not to mention the smell that comes mixed with the dust. Yikes. Dallas is between Lubbock and Houston, should I take some action? I'm not really sure what to do except not to water my garden today.

The dumbest headline I've ever seen on CNN, just a few moments ago:
"yIKEs, it's coming!"

This thread may well be of use to the general population of FlyerTalk, many of whom are not OMNI-qualified. Plus we have a lot of lurkers on FlyerTalk who are not logged-in and also can’t view OMNI.

So we have moved this thread into CommunityBuzz! at least for the duration of the storm.

Thanks to the OP for creating the thread.

Well if it washes Geraldo away.... Nah, I'm not that mean. Even Geraldo doesn't deserve that. But man is that guy dumb.

All I can picture a piece of debris from a broken white supremacist sign breaking his nose during a live broadcast. :D

yes, this is a very useful thread!

Horribly hot and muggy in North Texas.

As far as the way CNN and FOX do weather emergencies.....not good at all.
