halothane, all are welcome--we were all newbies once. ^
Mary2e, if you have a suggestion that would make you more likely to come, by all means let me know.
Oreck, cheesecake factory works fine for me, in fact i love that place, but i was thinking some folks might want a more 'local' spot? anyone? (i lived in hawaii, so am perfectly happy NOT to have a loco moco, but figure you guys might feel differently...?)
kaukau, jan_az and JonathanIT, we'll drink something tropical in your honor!

Sadly, I have a trip planned for next weekend, or I would join you all. I was in Honolulu last month for the Punahou Carnival and Chinese New Year, but am always ready to go back.
For a place to meet in Waikiki, might I suggest Duke's?
http://www.dukeswaikiki.com/
It has hosted more than one Do, IIRC and is oceanside and has a great view.
Hawai`i has a lot to offer, cuisine-wise. Nothing against the Cheesecake Factory, mind you...
Here's the master O`ahu and Waikiki Restaurant Thread for more suggestions: http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=700557

Duke's is virtually next door to the Cheesecake - I don't have strong feelings one way or the other but THIS Cheesecake is interesting!!

duke's actually sounds great, thanks for the tip, and it has that hawaiiana thing going for it. (that said, i love the cheesecake factory, and don't want to decide without more input from everyone else.)
please chime in about where you'd like to meet, and we'll make a decision by the end of this week. Oreck has kindly offered to help with organization. ^

I'm looking forward to my first FT DO! I have to confess that I've never been to Hawaii so my very small newbie vote would be for something like Duke's.
I'm also wondering where everyone is staying? Is there a DO "Central?"

I'm afraid I may have left the wrong impression. I'm not being picky, and any place would be perfectly fine for me.
My comment is due to potential other plans, as well as the inability to keep my eyes open after traveling from the East Coast the day before.
Duke's, while I don't particularly care for it, might be the perfect location for dinner. It's a large place and they often have entertainment at the bar. There's also a great outdoor area that would be good for socializing. A few steps from the sand doesn't hurt either.
I've never been to the Cheesesteak Factory and have never passed it when there wasn't a very long line to get in. This might impact going there, plus the amount of time the group will be allowed to stay.

I'm in if I can convince my girlfriend she wants to hang out w/ a bunch of crazy MRs! (Actually, she usually watches the dog, so she's very cool about running!)

Those Cheesecake Factories always have large lines at them... I ate at one once and afterward wondered what the big hoopla was about...it was fine but not worth a long wait.

it looks like duke's will be the place for dinner. if anyone REALLY wants the cheesecake factory--or something else--instead, now's the time to speak up. it makes sense to do something hawaiian while in hawaii.
chanp, chef mavros looks fabulous, but might be a bit pricy, ditto alan wong's. that said, i'd be happy to meet some folks there for lunch on monday! anyone interested?
also, since this is a mini-break and time zones won't exactly be working in our favor, i'm inclined to have dinner early, but i don't want to mess with anyone's plans for the day. would 5.30 be too geriatric for a sunday meal? what about 6p?edited to add...hope that's not too geriatric, 'cause the reservation is for 4.45!
SoulFlyer, we'd love to have you and your gf. i convinced mr kk to come with me to a do by explaining that i might learn something that would help him sit more comfortably and cheaply on planes in the future. (also, i promised some, ahem, favors.) whatever works.
InsideThePlane, there's not really a do central, but if there was one, it'd be waikiki. i'll be posting where people are staying as they tell me!
