I need to move from "definite" to "maybe." I start a new job on the East Coast on the 9th, and will not be able to take the 13th off. Unless I can find some kind of "Concorde" service that leaves the East Coast Friday night and gets to SNN by Saturday night, it's doubtful. Have tried SQ, Cathay, etc. etc. I think there's just not enough hours between Fri. & Sat. to get there. But, hard to forget what a blast last year was, so still looking....

It's impossible given the time difference. You would need a Concorde to do it. Even the Sonic Cruiser wouldn't make it in time.

Aah, is there no way you could beg off to a previous commitment on Friday the 13th so as to join us? Just that one day?????

If not, you will be very much missed, Skye1. :(

Well, I will have just started the job the previous Monday, having just arrived in Baltimore the night before. I'll surely see about the "begging" 'tho.. I think he's O.K. with me taking a Friday off later on, Febuary or March, once I get settled, etc. So, we'll see....always the optimist here. And, if school gets out early for the MLK weekend, I will deifnitely be surfing for a great last-minute deal.

Wireless, Airoli, and I do have a "Springey Horses" reunion to go to at the Singapore Zoo, to be sure :).

Why not bring your guest along for the SIN-Do? ;)

Hunki Dec 29, 2005 12:16 am

Punki just talked to the Le Meridian folks who advised that all 2006 Le Meridian stays will roll over to SPG when their affiliation is completed in March, so we will be staying at the Le Meridian, Changi, on Tuesday after our return from Kuala Lampur, and before our 7:15 am departure on 1/18/06. The Le Meridian has free shuttle service to and from Changi airport and downtown Singapore, so at $74.00 per night, it is an excellent choice.

We requested an upgrade based on our SPG Platinum status, but since the merger isn't complete, who knows?

Niced addition to the SPG group.

I mistakenly didn't book a room for Sunday the 15th. Anyone know any good rates for sunday night?

Conrad and the Hilton rates have gone through the roof.
I'll check the Meridian as mentioned above.

I got the Raffles Stamford for a $84 bid on Priceline, $100 all in. In the past I have been able to upgrade on checkin to an executive floor room for about another $35 per night.

belle3388 Jan 3, 2006 7:58 am

Go to http://www.asiarooms.com/singapore/singapore.html. Raffles Plaza Hotel (previously Westin) is $130.00 per night including taxes, service and breakfast. Last time I paid S$35.00 extra to be upgraded to a deluxe modern King room with a beautiful view of the harbour. The 'rain' shower is also incredible. ^

perhaps you might want to add it on to that thread. also bear in mind that whoever created the list might not have thought that the penang buffet in particular was all that great (sorry)

i was there once, a long time ago and imho was just average. when did you last visit? what exactly did you like about it?

getting good food in singapore is like going on a treasure hunt, not everything that's good is found in the same place ;P

Well, I used to live in Penang and love Penang food. I have been to many Malaysian restaurants here and there all these years and King Hotel's buffet is the closest to the many tastes I remember. My eating there is mainly for nostalgic reasons, I guess.

Edit to add: I am drooling now thinking of the yummy dishes. :o

MRT Advice, Please!

At this point, I think I will try to use the MRT to get around in SIN. Could someone please let me know the nearest MRT stops to:

The Conrad (for Sat night dinner meet-up)
The Sheraton (for Safari and other activities)

Any approximation of walking time from the MRT stop to the location would also be appreciated.

Is the No Signboard in Geylang close to an MRT stop?

See you all next week!

Can answer at least this question!!! The nearest MRT to the Sheraton is Newton Circus, which is approximately 2 minutes walk,,,,,,but only if you walk very very slowly!! :D

Best wishes, look forward to meeting you on the flight over!!! Dave

I don't recall with the Conrad (but know that somebody will :p ), but the station closest to the Sheraton is Newton. It's about a block from the Sheraton.

FlyinHawaiian Jan 3, 2006 12:57 pm

Guess I asked too soon :)

I found this site http://www.can.com.sg/ - it does a great job of finding the nearest MRT stations to points of interest...

Conrad - City Hall MRT (641 meters)
Sheraton - Newton MRT (194 meters)
No Signboard Geylang - Aljunied MRT (399 meters)

Thanks!

MAN Flyer Jan 3, 2006 3:23 pm

From the Conrad to City Hall MRT you can walk a good chunk of the way via the air conditioned underground malls that snake from Suntec to City Hall. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

Jaybee Jan 3, 2006 6:51 pm

Two Newbie Questions...

I think, from what I've been able to find, that our best bet is to hit an ATM machine at SIN to get S$. We'll be arriving at 1:30am (YAWN!) on 1/12, and staying at the Ritz Carlton.
We'd love to see the Night Safari, but we'll be flying home on the 15th, so can't go with the group. I can't find a place on their website to make reservations, and we're not sure which is the best way to go...the cocktail safari? (One cocktail?)...or just go there? From what I've read on Trip Advisor, the best way to go is by taxi. How am I doing so far?

mjm Jan 3, 2006 7:59 pm

Okay all,

Back at the controls and the page is now updated.

Check your details to see if I have overlooked anything and anyone with further flight details etc. drop a note of post here.

See you all very soon, and Happy New Year!

Correct. There's an ATM just before customs at SIN.

Just grab a taxi and go. No reservations needed. If you want to drink while you safari, they sell expensive beers there. It's not really a drinking event, but the resourceful FlyerTalker can make any event a drinking event.

bseller,

Roger that. For time's sake right now I have added him to the various event pages. Much easier than the Itins. page update. Tell him welcome aboard for us.

City Hall MRT is about 10~15 mins walk away from the Conrad, and that's assuming the human traffic doesn't hold one up :)

Newton MRT is right next to the Sheraton.

No Signboard Geylang is walkable from Aljunied, about an easy 5 mins walk.

By the time UA flight gets into SIN, the only public transport option is by taxi (~$25-30) or the maxicab which IIRC is about S$7~8 per person for any hotel in downtown.

There are several ATMs located in the central areas of both of the terminals at Changi, and as Spiff mentioned they're easily available before heading down the escalators to the Customs area.

(Few, those are the bank machines where you insert your plastic card and get cash from your bank account, and yes, even if the machine isn't operated by your bank)

belle3388 Jan 4, 2006 8:46 am

Few, I am sure I have seen ATMs in Canada. Wait, that was Quebec. Never mind. :p

Thanks for the heads up, spiff. First thing I am going to do upon arrival at SIN is to hit the ATM and get extra cash, because most of the hawker centres, food courts....etc., do no accept cards. What about No Sign Board, is it also cash only?

cawhite Jan 4, 2006 9:20 am

I thought mjm had posted about this, but I'm not finding it anywhere, so I'm going by what we did last year, and everyone paid cash.

Kiwi Flyer Jan 4, 2006 9:26 am

Last year everyone paid mjm in cash and he paid as one bill.

Right... there are several ATMs little bit off from the area before heading down the escalator to the immigration. Depending on the gate, you might pass one of them. I know there should be HSBC and other SIngapore banks ATMs. And yes, I remember seeing the ATM of ABN AMRO Bank at the Arrival area after customs.
