And Skye1, pm me when you get settled and let me know where you are living. I'm less than 10 miles from BWI. Perhaps we could carpool to one of the Happy Hours ... although, midweek is difficult for me.

BTW, I am doing 2 MRs in January from BWI and might be up for a HH in the Charm City.

The MRs are on January 11th and 17th so I could do a Baltimore HH on the 10th and the 16th.

Sorry to keep monopolizing this thread

I am trying to organize a poker get-together on January 6th at my place in conjunction with stef315's visit to DC. Here is the link about the game: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showt...63#post5042363.

Any other FTer interested?

After what we heard you did to everyone else the last time around?? :D

Syd - I can take over the thread if you like.. if its ok with you - will start a new thread and repeat the same exercise we did the last time when we moved.

Count me in, depending on the date.

Count me in for dinner on a Sunday, depending on which one. How about the 8th or even the 22nd? The 15th is over a holiday weekend and the 29th is the weekend of the CO DO in Houston (any of you other DCers going?). :)

peace,
~Ben~

While it is true that a DO Near a Metro - Probabilistically speaking has chance of attracting FAR more people (driving and non driving impaired) traditionally it has been quite the opposite with far more people attending
a. The DO we had at Sweet Water in Gallows
b. The DO we had at Rio Grande in Reston
c. The DO we had at American Tap Room in Reston

I think we have been pretty well split with having DOs in metro accessible places as well as just outside - we have DOs at the Capital City Brewery, Brickskeller, Jaleo, Flat Top Grill, etc. It all ends up depending on who the people are that are possibly going to make it for the do. If for instance the majority of the people are like GoingAway, MileageAddict, MarkBach, bhatnasx then it does make sense to have it in a place that is more convenient to that majority.

If folks in DC seem to be in a majority then by all means someone should go ahead and set up something in DC - but ultimately if no one is going to pick up the ball to get it going - and in this case Gator Gal and GoingAway decided to do it at a half way location then I think rather than raising issues with it - go with the flow. If you can't make this one then well lets do another date or maybe next month go ahead and organize one in DC!

And as for those not wanting to attend a NoVA or MD DO - for your sake I hope you dont have to fly out of IAD, BWI or even DCA ever! For who know what its like to step out of DC!

Pranu, If someone must depend on a ride, however graciously offered, they that someone must arrive at a pickup location at a certain time and be returned to that location at a certain time. In the real world every connection increases the possibility of misconnections and therefore, anxiety levels. If I wanted to go to and leave a DO outside of the expected hours would be out of luck or have to impose on somebody. This translates into non-drivers simply not willing to put up with the uncertainty, so they don't go or even enter into the FT talk on the DO.

Also, although many familiar FTers go to the DOs and we can try to accomodate them, there are many, many FTers in the DC areas and it seems we would be supporting the spirit of having DOs if we made them as accessible and hassle free as possible to those who are new to DOs.

That is why I suggest keeping the locations near a Metro. Doesn't have to be right next door, but within healthy walking distance.

My comments arose because it seems the discussion is driven by the car people without consideration of the larger number of FTers that could be included if we simply had DOs near Metros. It's really not that hard since so many gin joints have sprung up around Metro stops.

izzik Dec 20, 2005 4:55 pm

Why not just have DOs near Metros and sometimes not near Metros?
A little bit of both?

I promise to give everyone a chance to take home a portion of the pot as the top 3 players will be in-the-money.

GoingAway has been in touch with Skye1 and the 22nd works for him and it is the best weekend next month for me so, the 22nd it is! Stayed tuned ... I will start a new thread and post a link here. :)

That is exactly what we do. It seems to work for most people. For various reasons, not everyone can attend every DO.

Not to belabor the point, but it really doesn't work for most people when the DO is not near a Metro. It only works for people with cars or people who can abide a pick-up process. My point is: that eliminates many people. So I don't think it works for most people.

I just don't get why we don't simply schedule these DOs near Metros. What's the problem with that?

OK with me, although tazi has already started a thread for the 22-jan HH at the 94th aero squadron. Coordinate with her about how you want to do it. Then, I'll request that we close this one and use the new 2006 thread.

GoingAway Dec 21, 2005 10:30 am

Not entirely unexpected, but definitely disappointing, I'm going to be out of town on the 5th so will miss Sweet Willie's visit. I'll catch most of the rest of you later in the month, when Tazi sets up a dinner at that place in MD.

nor4 - I wholeheartedly agree with izzik and El Boocho to continue what we've always done to ensure that people in this area, not just those willing to drive near a metro or those that rely on a metro, can participate. If you look back in this and other DC HH threads, you'll find many postings of people who wanted to join in but were not willing to travel to the selected "metro accessible" locations and instead requested other locations, e.g. Reston or near IAD. Also, you'll find the different people that attend the different locations, selecting those convenient to them or that they can get to. As I'm sure you aware, the DC metro area is fairly large and sprawling so what may seem convenient or easy to you can be very out of the way and inconvenient for others. A mix is appropriate and is what is and should continue to be the status quo.
