Whichever you choose, I know we are in very capable hands with you, and whatever decision you make will be good.

I know I am not yet a committed attendee - and perhaps I am the only non drinker in the group - but would you consider having bottles of water as well as bottles of wine? I hope that some moderate amount of alcohol and water would be included in the fixed price. If more alcohol is consumed beyond that, perhaps the drinkers could cover that overage. The cost of alcohol at an FT function can add considerably to the meal cost.

SanDiego1K I doubt if you will be the only non-wine-inbiber. Large bottles of mineral water on the tables is just a given, along with house white and red wines. I agree that "family style" is the way I would go--lots of platters on the table. If anyone wants hard liquor prior to the meal, than it is my feeling that that option would be paid for at the time. Now, On the other hand, if someone signals for a gallon of Grappa at the end of the meal, we'll have to rely on your clear head to figure out the check. I have no doubt that this will all be resolved in a fair and convivial manner by this fine group. Looking forward to your being a committed attendee.

I forgot to post that we are now ticketed, card-carrying, VCE attendees.

We will arrive on the morning of the 19th and depart mid-morning on the 22nd.

I am very excited about coming to this event because I find the attending posters just totally fascinating. I have a good feeling that this will be a memorable and amazing party (right up there with the original HNL PIP).

So, where's the lovely Belle?

You are not the only non-drinker in the group, as I also do not drink alcoholic beverages. I agree with your suggestion, SanDiego1K, as I have paid for alcoholic beverages in the past, of which I certainly did not consume one drop. Thank you for the suggestion.

I am not a committed attendee just yet either, but I am certain that Dovster would prefer that I was definitely committed — in more ways than one...

I can't foresee this being a problem in the least. In Italy, table wine is cheaper than Coca-Cola. In fact, I think it is even cheaper than most bottled water.

If Monitor, who is one of the classier boozers among us, decides to order Mouton Lafitte Rothschild he will shell out the big bucks himself. In fact, if I decide to go with my considerably less expensive favorite, Soave Bolla, I will also pay for it.

On the other hand, I, unfortunately, will have to pay for the green and red garbage (sorry, you people call them "vegetables") which I never eat and the coffee, which I never drink.

Ah, well, the UIG likes both of the above so she can have my share.

Canarsie, you have undoubtedly read on the other thread about the "Canarsie t-shirt" which will be given away. Hasn't that forced your hand and gotten you committed?

I already e-mailed O2K, but just wanted to add my approval of the dinner arrangements here.

I think a prix fixe dinner that includes some vin ordinaire and acqua minerale on the table is perfect. And if some people want to order aperitifs or fine wines or digestifs, they can pay for those drinks separately. :)

Dovster Sep 24, 2004 3:17 am

Please keep in mind that the night before the dinner, we will be going to a very expensive bar in the Piazza San Marco. This will either be outside (Quadri) if weather permits or inside (Harry's) if we have no such luck.

Either of these places charge about 2 weeks' salary for a Coca-Cola and the prices go up from there.

To avoid any last minute problems, I suggest that we agree now that Cholula will foot the entire tab.

Why in the world would anybody order up the Frenchy stuff when there's a restaurant host putting out perfectly good local plonk which he thinks goes well with his food?
I'm sure that we'll come across a place where something more is called for, but at the place where o2k is trying to set us up, the Dovster will probably be wasting his money buying the Bolla. The jug wine on the table in a place like this could very well have come from Bolla anyhow.
Note to o2k: I don't think that we'd need to put the dinner back more than half an hour. The opera will last until 615-630 and there should then be plenty of time for us to get back to the hotel and freshen up if the table is called for 730.

Stimpy How does your schedule look? We would love to see you.

Agree absolutely. We're fine with the prix fixe dinner at either 7 or 7:30. Family style sounds marvelous, just leave it to the restaurant. Although it's probably a crime in Venice, neither of us can eat fish. I'll make up for it in wine, though.

stimpy, if I understand correctly, your SO speaks French but little/no English. I'm sure some of us will be happy to chat with her (and you) in French -- if that will help! ;)

Stimpy, my girlfriend speaks fluent French (in fact, it is much better than her English) so your SO will not feel lonely.

And it appears that belle3388 will be coming to Venice directly from two or three weeks at language school in Provence. As for me, I do a bit of French but after a few drinks, every attempt that I make at language comes out sounding like Nuyorican.
