My First DC Happy Hour!

Count me in on the 29th. Just got lucky and looked at this thread for the first time in weeks, I thought I had missed it for January.

Reston town center map: #55 is Rio Grande
http://www.restontowncenter.com/map.html

Directions:
http://www.restontowncenter.com/directions.html

It is COLD here (midday it is 26 F).
Forcast for tomorrow is sunny, low 25 F, high of 38 F (I hope!).

Reston town center should be nice to walk around.

If you need transport let me know!

Edit: The better half may be coming with. Probably wants to know what kind of craziness drives a person to fly to Munich for 3 hours Sunday night...

pranu Jan 28, 2005 12:42 pm

Oz - See you guys at noon @ the Sheraton!

bhatnasx Jan 28, 2005 12:56 pm

I'll see you guys at Rio Grande as well - I haven't made reservations or anything like that...has anyone? Or shall I just call them & let them know we're expecting a party of about 10+ people under the name Flyertalk?

If someone else already has or wants to take care of this, please post here...

yogi Jan 28, 2005 1:25 pm

Someone get there early!

I called the Rio Grande, no reservations or call aheads accepted. First come first serve.

They can set up tables for at least 12. So if someone can get there at noon (I can't) and carve out a section, that would be good.

Sounds good - I doubt they'll be that packed on a Saturday for lunch, but you never know!

OT: A quick heads up to DC-area FT'ers that use BWI!

Airport FastPark at BWI has some good coupon deals available right now - see this thread for info!

Well you guys have me in the party this time - and with my luck - there will be two huge birthday parties happening there for a Saturday Lunch :D

Oh come now! Lisa, I promise not to have 15 shots of tequila this time. :p

Shameless bump since the thread was at the top anyway:

We need a headcount by the end of February so we may make the appropriate purchases.

geo1005 Jan 28, 2005 6:47 pm

Dude. There's still ice and snow on the ground. Jeeeez - did you not see the pics of Dicky-boy Cheney in his green parka and snowcap on the front of the Washington Post Style section today? Hmmmmm.?

Once the Cherry Blossoms have come out, frozen and fallen, and then another four weeks have gone by, then and only then will a true Washingtonian begin to think about baseball. :)

El Boocho Jan 28, 2005 8:24 pm

I hate it when this happens...Still going to try to make it, but I have multiple appointments for tomorrow. If I do make it I will be we and we will be 2. La Boocha will probably be along.

tazi Jan 29, 2005 5:51 am

I have to work so I won't be able to make it today :(
btw, Rio Grande is great at accommodating large groups. I've taken 25+ there before. They usually just want to wait until the entire group is there before adding you to waiting list - if there is one. Have a great time!

MileageAddict Jan 29, 2005 5:57 am

Tazi: No comment from me.

I will be there along with Mrs. MileageAddict and MileageAddictJunior. Who is picking up Glen and Lynn from the Sheraton???? If I need to pick them up, I can do it but it will make for a tight squeeze for all 5 of us.... anyone?

Okay....I'll assume Pranu will pick them up. Darn, I was gonna pick them up in the tractor....

:p

Yes Pranu is picking them up :)

But we can all do joyrides in the tractor later!

MileageAddict Jan 30, 2005 7:33 am

Fun lunch yesterday! Thank you all for seeing Glen and Lynn off to Australia.

By the way, I thought the tortilla soup at the Rio Grande was about as good as I have ever tasted; the rest of the meal was kind of average. However, the company was excellent. ^

geo1005 Jan 30, 2005 10:16 am

Agreed! It was great to finally put some faces with names (FT handles) after so many years and near misses! Cheers!

:D

ozstamps Jan 31, 2005 2:09 am

Thanks to the 10 or so DC folks who ventured out on a Saturday, when all sensible folks should have been shopping and doing 'weekend' things. :)

Great to see new and familiar faces among y'all. Nice meeting another big UA flyer Yogi for the first time - and thanks for the offer to collect us on way thru - but no laptop, so only just read it now. :p

Tazi appeared cleverly disguised as geo1005 ... but that didn't fool us. No-one has seen THEM in the same room together, that's for sure.

Suzi1K kindly met us at airport 9pm Friday for a drink at Sheraton, and she hoped to make it along, but was on an Asia flight even earlier than ours.

Special thanks to Pranu for swinging by and picking us up, and to MileageAddict for firing up that John Deere to get us back to hotel for a quick shower and freshen-up (love that Starwood late check-out guarantee!) and for getting us to airport in perfect time.

Shame we needed to leave when we did, and the 2½ hours went pretty fast. ^

Sorry I missed you all!

Bummer... sorry I missed you all, esp. since it would have been nice to compare recent PR "trip reports" with Oz. I wasn't in town, though. My hubby (still getting used to saying that! :) ) and I decided to drive up to CT/MA for the weekend and didn't return until late last night. But you know.... at least we returned, and that's good. Because somewhere outside of Baltimore we barely missed being in what would have been an awful accident. A speeding car trying to brake at the last minute to avoid hitting a much slower car in front of it on the far right lane spun out of control, turning counterclockwise across all lanes and coming toward us into our lane. I'm not sure how we got out of it unscathed, but we did. It was awful... I've never been so close to being in such a bad accident. :(

I'm feeling very lucky to be alive today and able to check in on my FT friends! I hope to see you all at any February events.

I'm in town 2/16 - 2/21 and 2/25 - 2/28. Any of those days would be fine :) :)

(PS: I live about 1.33 miles away from Sweetwater, good choice!)

GoingAway Feb 9, 2005 6:56 am

How about Sunday the 27th? It's the only date I'm fairly certain to be in town for this month as I expect I expect business travel to start kicking in.

As for where ... how about somewhere in the Tysons area? That's pretty central for most folks, and not too far from a metro station for those needing a lift.

dan1431 Feb 9, 2005 7:13 am

I would be in the DC area on the 27th...so if anything happens, I would be up for something.

Dan

geo1005 Feb 9, 2005 7:44 am

Sunday, Feb. 27th look like a possible for me. ^

As for location - the aforementioned Sweetwater Tavern is as close to a Metro as anywhere in Tyson's Corner so I'd suggest sticking with that destination!

pranu Feb 9, 2005 7:52 am

27th!
Sweet Water!
Done! ^

GoingAway Feb 9, 2005 8:21 am

You guys are really stuck on Sweetwater ... which one is are we headed to this time? 50 and Gallows near 495? (not quite Tysons but I believe there is one at the intersection)

and of course ... what time do you want to meet?

seoulmanjr Feb 9, 2005 9:12 am

The one on gallows? Man - I could walk there from my apartment! :D

I'll be coming, albeit a bit late - depends on what time you guys shoot for.

peace,
~Ben~

yogi Feb 9, 2005 9:25 am

2/27 sounds good, I will be back from my IAD-SFO-NRT-SIN-DXB-FRA-DXB-SIN-KUL-SIN-NRT-SFO-IAD red-eye marathon, and might even be awake during the daytime.

I am sure the family will come along too.

:D You can't argue against GOOD beer and those Ozzie Rolls!!!

Gallows is fine - close enough to Tyson's! :p

seoulmanjr Feb 9, 2005 12:21 pm

FYI - the Sweetwater Tavern at on Gallows at Rt 50 is only about a ten minute walk from the DunnLoring-Merrifield Metro on the orange line.

I'll be there late since I have to take my girlfriend to DCA for her evening flight back to IAH. What time were you all thinking of getting it started? Can't wait to meet the DC FTers!

peace,
~Ben~

Looks like I need to check this thread more frequently.

You need to follow Gallows RD South toward Rt 50. FYI, you need to cross Lee HWY and there isn't any marked pedestrian crossing IIRC.

I work near by but on Sunday I have to drive 40 min...

P.S.
I guess I'm out of shape since it will take me about 15 min :D

pranu Feb 9, 2005 2:10 pm

Looks like we have a sizeable group going here.

They dont take reservations but they do take call aheads. BUT
they don't seat you until ALL in your party have arrived.

So I guess we need to know the time we are meeting and have a confirmed show of hands.

Sam! Where are you? :D

GoingAway Feb 9, 2005 2:53 pm

No more questions ...

DATE: Sunday, February 27th
TIME: 6 pm
LOCATION: Sweetwaters @ 50 and Gallows, Fairfax

I know of at least one person planning to take metro, if there are others let me know if you want a ride.

I'm a maybe.

seoulmanjr Feb 9, 2005 8:43 pm

Put me as a maybe since I probably can't show until 7pm.

peace,
