fargo Apr 9, 2000 4:40 pm

I am 49 soon to be 50 Name is Sherman have lived in ND all my life. I am a project manager for a construction company, just started, was self employed for thirty years, my first real job. I enjoy travel and adventure. Almost all my travel is for pleasure usually only two or three trips per year. In the summer like to take back pack trips with sons and grandsons three of each. In winter take vacation to somplace warm with wife who is not into outdoors. We vacationed in HI in Jan 1 week Maui 2 days Oaho. was very relaxing used award miles for trip. I have never reached any elite status although that might change this year as I hope to get to Europe a couple of times this year, as well as a couple of domestic trips. Have always flowen on NW although United Express also flies into Fargo. I have been able to get quite a few FF miles on Contintal about 100K without ever flying through phone and other promos, as well as quite a few on NW also. I am new to computers as well as relearning to type. I enjoy topics and learning new info on this site. Greetingsto all. Sherman :}

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I've been dropping in once a week or so for a few months, so I thought it was about time to add my 2¢ worth. Especially after seeing the talk about baseball and Don & Charlies in Scottsdale. You see, I have signed a couple of items on display there. (with all the humility I can muster)

After a (too-short) playing career, I still wanted to be involved in baseball but didn't want a coaching position. So after a couple years of 'bird-dogging' (an independent free-lance scout), I am currently employed as an advance scout for a major league club. All of my travel arrangments are booked by the organization, but I've picked up a few tips to wrangle an occasional upgrade. Although I seem to have better luck upgrading rooms rather than flights. I'm looking at 50± flights and aprox 70 - 80 motel nights, so the upgrades are really appreciated.

Schedule permitting, I would like to try to attend a get-together sometime. As Rudi alluded to in another thread, I am sure that there are some 'insider' tips passed along in those meetings. Or perhaps I could meet someone for lunch and a couple of brews sometime.

So, thanks for the tips and hints - even though us lurkers don't always acknowledge them.

(Aside to Crews1 - did you have a relative that played at Chavez Ravine and the Jake?)

BlondeBomber Apr 14, 2000 2:31 pm

Welcome EaglePutt, we do have an active FT community (STIFFS in Tucson and some couple that appears to own a restaurant in Scottsdale since they appear there so often http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif.

Hope to meet up along the way. STIFFS is having some kind of get together when I come down April 24-29 after a very brief passage through PHX and Scottsdale on the 23rd.

EaglePutt Apr 14, 2000 3:11 pm

Thanks for the welcome BlondeBomber. Now that I have introduced myself, I'll try to post more often. I was in Tucson last month and I should be in the area again next month. As soon as I find out a definite date, I'll let you guys know.

Welcome EaglePutt. I too have signed a few items at Don & Charlies -- but they've all earned me miles... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Holler next time you're out this way scouting the D-Backs. We'll definitely introduce you to what BB calls "our" restaurant!

Eagleputt, you've got mail. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

dsimon Apr 16, 2000 8:06 am

After lurking around on the boards for some time now, I figured that it was time to properly introduce myself

My name is David and I am a 24 year old who lives in Westfield, New Jersey. I have a share in a commercial-industrial paint contracting firm in Elizabeth, and enjoy that very much. In fact, we do some work for CO and UA at EWR, and it is always fascinating to go over there and look at the job sites and be up close and personal with the aviation indsutry. Perhaps Catman could get me an "in" with the UA folks http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif.

I am originally from here in Scotch Plains, NJ, but have spent the previous four years in PHX doing my undergraduate work at Arizona State. Needless to say, I did a lot of commuting between EWR and PHX and accrued miles rather fast. My sophomore year, I achieved Elite status with HP and enjoyed wonderful service (contrary to many opinions, it seems, on this board) from them and remained loyal. During my senior year, I realized that I would be heading back east and focused my mileage deposits on CO and OnePass with many CO and HP code-share flights.

I only fly about 45K miles per year, which on this board, seems to be not all that much, and at this point it is primarily for leisure travel. Other than travel, some of my other interests include, golf, cycling, hiking, and reading- all of which I was able to do an exorbitant amount of during my time in the "Valley of the Sun." My main interest, though, is my fiancee Shannon, who was brave enough to move from the sunny climes of Scottsdale to New Jersey, where she is a teacher for the cognitively and physically disabled in Somerset County.

I echo everyone else when I write that I am thankful to have found this bulletin board and have begun to foment some relationships with some wonderful individuals, and the group at large.

I hope that I have the opportunity to meet many of the FTer's, both local and distant in the coming days.

Catman Apr 16, 2000 8:56 am

Welcome to all the newest members of F-T and Dsimon: the United folks at EWR are always nice (even for those who fly the "BLUE" airline!!) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

dsimon Apr 16, 2000 10:49 am

Thanks again for the welcome, Catman. I just have this sinister feeling that when I submit my bid to the contractor and owner, they will just know that I bleed CO blue. This is going to be a good character test to see what kind of scruples I have: Do I pledge allegiance to UA in order to get the job at the the new Air Cargo Center, or do I remain loyal to CO, and let this one slip away http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif?

Decisions, decisions...

Can't tell you how much fun I have had reading here and how much I have learned from all of you! Thank you so much! It is also really nice to read about everyone, and thank those of you who gave me such a warm welcome when I first joined.

A little about me: I am owned by a wonderful cat (Meow at ya Catman) and paid by an airline....rather shy to post a lot here! I grew up in Montreal (SMessier: bonjour!), travelled all over the world before I was bright enough to join any FF programs!!! Then began traveling as a travel agent and couldn't earn any miles! Now all I do is standby travel and still can't earn miles. My goal is to become a million miler any which way except by frequenting conga lines too often, sorry (ducking)! Hobbies include furniture painting and mileage hunting and enjoying the beauty of Tucson and good food! All in the wrong order though...I am a real mileage geek. Hmmm, is geek masculine or feminine? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif Maybe I am a mileage geekess! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Well, I guess I have been putting off my entry into this thread and should just do it. I have been lurking at this site since October and started posting in January. I have been flying all of my life (I'm almost thirty) but have never concentrated on one program until the postings on this site convinced me to start trying to. Living in the Dallas area, American is the logical choice but I have had many bad experiences on the airline from years past. Since the start of the year I have about 31,000 Onepass miles and have made Silver Elite. Almost all of my traveling is on my own dime on weekend trips. I have also made Platinum with Hyatt and Silver with Hilton. Now that I have a "real job" I can afford this hobby and I'm having the time of my life. Thanks for everyone's great advice. By the way, I'm trying to make the Flyertalk event in Montreal in July to meet some of you. If your ever in the DFW area just let me know if you have any time to meet up for a drink and discuss travel stories. We even have Krispy Kremes here now.
Thanks
-James

Thanks, Applefan.

Where did KK open in the DFW area?

GRR_Flyer Apr 25, 2000 6:29 pm

While on the flyertalk chat area tonight, Catman suggested that I post a 'bio' to the who we all are area. Like many others, I've been a lurker over the past 4-5 months and have learned quite a bit.

I work in the marketing department for a manufacturer in the music products business and have been traveling pretty regularily for about 3 years. The GRR part of my name stands for Grand Rapids, as in Michigan (not Minnesota). Funny story about that, one time some Japanese from our head office flew over to the states and were booked to Grand Rapids Minnesota rather than Michigan. If you've ever been there, you'd understand what the look of shock on their faces must have been. It's not the end of the world, but it's close. I suppose I can say that having grown up in Minnesota. That can explain my loyalty to NWA as well. (and Best Buy, and the Vikings, and Daytons/Target)

I started traveling about 9 years ago when I had a job as a piano player on a cruise ship in the Caribbean sailing through most of the Islands and even South America. After being around people from so many places and cultures, I realized that I was a very small part of this world and wanted to see as much of it as possible during my lifetime. Met a wonderful woman from Sweden and proceded to visit there several times over the next couple of years. During that time, I made an interesting 2 day trip on a ferry to Tallin Estonia, about a year later I saw on the news that this particular ship had sank in some rough weather with about 800+ people on board, most of whom drowned. A cold dose of reality that day.

So, where was I....my job takes me all over the country, about 18 trips for business last year, and another 3-4 for pleasure. I did my first 'mileage-run' this year on a NWA cybersaver to LGW and hope to do another this summer or fall. My co-workers can't believe that I actually enjoy all the traveling. I tell them, the physical traveling part can be a drag, but meeting new people and seeing new places all over the world is an unbelievable opportunity.

Oh yeah, the girl from Sweden didn't work out, but in a wierd quirk of fate, she's now a FA for a European airline.

- Kurt

GRR_Flyer Apr 25, 2000 8:10 pm

Here's a link to the chat area. I think it's still a 'test' site though. It was posted a little while ago on one of the boards for people to check out. Overall, it's pretty cool. I copied the bookmark and hopefully this will get you there.

Shadow,
KK opened their first store in the Metroplex last year in South Arlington. They opened the second store just today in Grapevine. I found out when I was listening to a traffic report on the radio this morning. I guess it was quite a traffic jam caused by the store! By the way, this new Grapevine store is just a couple of miles from the North exit of DFW http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

shadow Apr 25, 2000 10:20 pm

Thanks GRR_Flyer...I'm in!

Comicwoman Apr 26, 2000 6:01 pm

I posted way back on #2 or #3 (maybe it was #4). Much has changed, so perhaps it is time for an update.
Now in addition to AA Platinum, I got UA to comp me to Premier Exec. Since I commute from ORD to DEN, either airline works. Over the years I have preferred AA cause it is less crowded in the terminal and upgrades are easier. But now I am also going to Minneapolis from Denver, so I thought I would demand the UA comped status. And it worked.
I commute 900 miles to work each week, so I do not do much personal travel, yet. The airmiles are there for my partner and me to take some cool trips in the future. So long as our cats let us go (see their pictures in the Photo section).
Occupationally, I am part finance person, part trainer, and part stand up comic. Only the first two pay well. The third I do when I can, but it comes in handy when I train.
I do tend to lurk more than post. I find myself nodding when I read posts, but I do refrain from posting "me too." I am now working with a bunch of rookie travelers (rather than when I was a consultant and everyone had status). They don't understand why a short person like me gets Economy Plus on UA and they are crammed in a center seat in the back.
One day I hope to make some FT gathering. I have met three of the finest FTers in Chicago last summer. This is a great board and even when grounded, I need my FT fix.

curt Apr 28, 2000 10:01 am

I found out about this great board in January 2000 and lurked around some time...Got registered in March and started posting to the LH and Star boards.

I'm in my early 30's and teach at a university in Germany. As a student job I worked in a travel agency and flew quite a bit as a nonrev on PA. My travel was and is mostly long-haul to the US and Canada.

I'm FTL with LH but I doubt I will become SEN. I like some travelling but not too much. As *Silver I try to stick to that alliance but unfortunately they don't fly to my favorite islands: the Seychelles... Well, Air Seychelles, here I come. BTW, they are quite decent for an airline with only two jets (one 767-300 and one 767-200) and four Twin Otters and one Islander...

KarenPercy Apr 28, 2000 4:31 pm

Hello everyone!
Not sure how many people still read this string but I thought I'd introduce myself.
I am supposed to be working from home today but instead spent the last 3 hours reading Who We All Are 1-6. Every post, no kidding. I now know all of you better. What a super interesting group of people from around the world!! And all with a variety of interests!
Here's my mini-bio:
32, single (never married). Work like a slave at Intel where I figure out how to get "chips" to computer manufacturers (all of em like Dell, Compaq, HP, IBM, Gateway, etc etc)
Been there since I graduated college where I got a B.S. degree (BS is my specialty) in Bus. Management with minors in Psychology & Music.
Grew up in the Bay Area (Karen2...I grew up in Saratoga, CA) college in So. Cal at Univ. of Redlands (near Palm Springs), then back to Bay Area, until I got transferred in 93 to this great town near Sacramento, CA.

LOVE to travel but since I do zero travel for business it is all on my dime. I am combination jealous/happy for all you frequent travelers. I would love it, but also hate it as some of my travel experiences have exhausted me.
I don't rack up FF miles at any quick pace so I am stoked I found this website. (by accident) I have frequent traveler accounts with United (primary), Delta, American, NW, AmericaWest, Alaska, TWA, Continental, Hyatt, Marriott Rewards, and Holiday Inn.
Pretty hilarious given I've traveled on business exactly 1 time in 10 years.

One of the benefits to my company is we get a paid sabbatical every 7 years of 2 months off. Cool, huh?? In 1997 I took my 1st sabbatical where I mooched off people I knew working in other countries. I went to Seattle for a week, Japan for 10 days, and France, Germany, Austria & Switzerland. Travelled 6 weeks and only spent 4 days in hotels. I couldn't have afforded it otherwise. I went to Seattle with 7 girlfriends for our annual "girls" trip and did the rest of the travel solo. Spent my 30th birthday on a train from Salzburg to Basel, Switzerland in which I missed lunch because I didn't understand the reservation system and spoke to no one all day because I thought they didn't speak English. Not a good way to have a traumatic birthday, thinking of how old you have gotten for 10 hours straight with no one to talk to.

Anyways, my interests are travel (I am known in the office as the travel person so I help people schedule trips on the internet...I never use a travel agent), Music (I am a singer and sing in 2 local groups), Cooking, Reading, Playing Bunko (a dice game...I and 11 other women play once a month for money & the competition gets ugly...it's like poker night for men) and Movies (I go to tons of movies)
I am the organizer of the aforementioned annual girls trip (this year is Santa Barbara) and that same gang and their families also have an annual camping trip.
I visit my sister annually who lives in Wash DC and will go to England this year to visit a colleague who will be working over there for 3-6 months. I cannot resist free lodging anywhere!
I have a cat named Honus Wagner (after the baseball player).
Let's see...I won 2 ClickRewards sweepstakes this year, one for 25,000 miles and another for 10,000 miles yesterday. I am really enjoying this winning miles thing.

Just wanted to thank you all for such great information. As soon as I found this website I got accounts at greenpoints, trocamania, milesource and milesmall.
I can't believe I met miles obsessed people like myself (Wanderlust...you killed me with that email about Bob). I never had AOL or anything like that so I am loving this community-on-the-web thing.
Since I plan my own travel I am always wondering when faced with a list of lodging or destination options what would be best. I now have found a place where people can actually recommend something that don't get anything in return (like a travel agent, or similar)
So once again, thanks.

A final thought:
Since I have always traveled randomly, just when I thought about it, and never for miles, always for a specific vacation, I decided recently that if I was going to see as much of the world as I would like to, I'd better get on with it. Someday I'll have kids and get busy and it will be harder and harder. So I just bought an Atlas and some trip planning software and I'm going to sit down and map out every trip I'd like to take sometime in my lifetime. I'm going to put them all in a spreadsheet or something (us tech people are spreadsheet obsessed). Then I'm going to get a rough idea of how much all these jaunts will cost me and start budgeting out how many times a year I'll have to travel, how much it will cost, etc.
And now I have all sorts of sly ways to get ff miles to pay for some of it.
Thanks for inspiring me everyone! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

chalf Apr 28, 2000 7:43 pm

I've been reading and posting on the board since sometime in early 1999 (at least), so I should probably put up self-identification.

Currently I have no elite status, though was Delta SM last year. Long-distance flying has been curtailed since I went back to school in Sept. 1999, but previously had some business travel from BOS-SVO on DL/SR (while that great partnership lasted). All was in coach, of course (the 'reward' of working in academia). Most travel currently on US, though by destination and price more so than choice. Major criterion is whatever is cheap and not inconveniently routed. DL and CO are also frequent choices.

I've always loved traveling, starting with family vacations, have worked stints in both Moscow and London, and wouldn't mind doing so again.

While gainfully employed (rather than my current role as a parasitic student), I conducted research and technical assistance projects on Russian economic reform (any problems are not my doing) for a university-based research group. I'm currently a 1L at a certain Boston law school, looking forward to returning to the working world and of course looking for more ways to earn miles.

Hi, I guess it's time to reveal a little of myself. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif As you can probably guess, I am a librarian. I work at a Catholic school in Alabama. Originally from S. Calif (my husband is originally from NYC), settled here after travelling with the Army. Lived in Germany, Belgium, and Italy. My professional involvements have led me to travel more by air. So, I come humbly seeking advice. Oh, yes, we're the family of four (two boys 17 & 10) that can travel for a week with only one large suitcase and three carryons for the entire group http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif

well, we (Gisela and I) also manage to fly away with only hand-luggage ,,, but very seldom we manage to fly home that way ...

protomartyr Apr 29, 2000 11:35 am

Well I've been hangin' around here for awhile now so I'd better say something about myself. I'm forty-two and I used to do alot more traveling than I do now (I met my French wife in England in '82). Seven years ago we had twins (boy/girl) and became the on-board nightmare of all of you good people. We now also have a three year old, so the only travelling we do for the moment is an annual trip to France (pour rendre visit a la belle famille). We're registered with United and American and already I've picked up some great info off these boards, merci beaucoup! Incidently, I learened about this site when Pudding Guy appeared on a local talk radio show.

Well, coming back is another story http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif Actually we're doing much better. When we flew back from Cozumel last month I was amazed at the couples with four huge suitcases. Since they weren't divers I can't imagine what they were taking with them.
