Gee, I never got around to posting one of these. For those who are interested, I'll keep it brief...
I'm 39 years old and live in the Seattle area, where I'm a creative director for a Web technology firm. My job is basically to come up with interesting and strategically useful ways to apply interactive tools. My biggest recent project was the design of an interactive VIP visitors-center environment for a telecom firm in the New York/New Jersey area, hence numerous SEA-EWR runs and Gold status on Continental. I'm married with one son, aged five, who in my care has become a well-behaved veteran flyer. He can conceive of no higher excitement than a transatlantic overnight run in a British Airways Economy window seat. I, of course, have him beat: I can conceive of First. Give him a few years. My first flight was on a QANTAS 707 from Idlewild to London Heathrow; I was not quite two years old. Since then I have logged about one million miles, averaging 80-100k per annum at present. My most memorable flight came thanks to my prior life as a producer for a network TV news division, before this interactive stuff made life more interesting. I was travelling around Europe "with President Bush" -- more accurately, aboard the White House Press Charter, which was a clapped-out Pan Am 747-100 that followed Air Force One everywhere. No rules aboard the press charter: nobody really buckled up for takeoff or landing, food and drink flew everywhere, and one of the big sports was for two people to skate down the twin aisles during takeoff on seatback emergency cards in their stocking feet. They'd slam into the rear galleys at quite astonishing speed. Anyway, on one trip we shot an approach into Heathrow at dusk, flying west up the Thames toward the setting sun, and I stood between the pilot and first officer the whole way with ATC headphones on my head and a Pan Am glass full of Scotch in my hand. That was fun. I have never been in a remotely dangerous situation on a commercial flight, I don't think, although I was on a CO 757 last year that was struck by lightning. I did walk away from a Cessna 152 wreck once. We landed in a mud field and totaled the plane, no harm done to us. I've been signed up for FF programs since 1991 or so. Oh, the years that went by with me tossing the applications aside because "I'll never do anything with miles anyway"! That was before I knew Randy P.! Anyway, I have been elite with AA, NW and CO and now accumulate most of my miles on the OnePass, BA, and DL programs. My traffic patterns shift as I move from one client/geography to another... I like CO best in the States, but I don't know if I'll be able to keep my OnePass Elite tags now that the New Jersey job is over! I like the BA Exec Club USA because I can dump my domestic AA, AS, and HP miles in there, the FirstUSA Platinum Visa is a good product, and the Household Account feature is great -- we have relatives in England and the family vacation awards rack up more quickly that way. I've never had significant trouble scoring award travel -- managed it on BA at the height of summer, on DL, QQ, AA, NW, UA... you name it. I don't know what the complaining is about. A wee bit of flexibility and there you are. I"m sending my wife off to SYD this spring in F on QF to see relations, courtesy OnePass. I haven't been on QF myself since toilet training, but I understand it's very nice! My biggest business travel challenge is to remember that despite the mechanicals and the delays and the flaring tempers and the rotten food and the sheer exhaustion of it all, when the wings catch the air and the nose tilts up and the airport terminal gets smaller below you, dammit, it really is magic, even now, isn't it? Who we all are 5
I figured after 88 posts a new section was worth it for this OMNI AWARD WINNING FORUM.
We probably have enough to put together a book called "The Flyertalkers" with pixs, bios, quotable quotes but no earthshattering scandals. (After all, what scandal could happen on this little board! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif) |
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif Good way to end this thread--over to who we all are 5:

I have been waiting for a very special occasion to talk a little about myself... So today is THE day!
I will soon be 40, am a French citizen and a Star Alliance addict, well not that much in fact. It depends on the fare. I began flying 20 years ago, when I used to work on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. I also have been a FA for one month and I currently work both as a male nurse and a teacher. What I like best is to travel worldwide, with two or three stays in the US/year. I teach French as a foreign language, and would be glad to make a deal with airline companies in need of a special language training for their crew... I can't bear Air France and their "do as little" policy both in flight and offices... My next planned trips??? NYC in March, China, Chicago in May, Praha in November and maybe Buenos Aires one of these days... Last (but not least): sorry about my English! PS: this was my 30st post!!!! THE special occasion I've been waiting for! |
felicitations (pour devenir officiellement MEMBRE).

Thank you Rudi...

grenouille
Congratulations and welcome. I couldn't help but notice that you will be in NY in March and it just so happens that Catman is having a little planned weekend then. Perhaps you can make the Party in the Big Apple. Either way I hope to meet you soon. Cheers Scott |
grenouille.. a MEOWY welcome to Flyertalk and I hope you get a lot out of all of the advice and tips and fun we have here!
A flyertalk get together if you are unaware is a meeting of people who contribute to this board who talk miles, points, life, philsophy, favorite beers, places they have been. IT's like a giant family unit here. If you are in New York City the weekend of March 17th to the 19th please consider yourself invited to my get together. Here are the links: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/000008.html and... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/000227.html |
Hello everyone
I thank you all for your welcome, and your invitation to the flyingtalh get together... I will certainly be in NYC around the 17th of March (I promised my old mum to show her the World, and to take her to NY once in her life...). If I happen to be there at that time, I will be very happy to see you, even for a few minutes (I will have to take care of Mum..., well, she is not that old in fact, but she speaks very little English and is not particularly interested in Miles. Shame on her!) Anyway, if not in NYC, I will be in Chicago in May (13th to 18th, for the APA convention). In case we can't meet in NYC, I wish you a very happy meeting. Could you please announce in advance where and when you will meet? Have a nice day |
grenouille: please feel free to watch this board for the complete schedule for the NYC get together.
It's a free form, nothing in stone event except for the dinner. hope to me you then or sometime in the near future! |
I have been posting messages on the board for a few months so I thought it is about time to introduce myself...
I am 26 years old currently living in the States. I grew up in Hong Kong but had my education in England so I traveled at least 50,000 miles a year between Hong Kong and England and other vacation places for the 11 years I was studying in England. I then moved to the States to work for an IT consulting company and surprise, the work requires a lot travel! For the last two years I have been on international assignment and racked up a lot of miles. Last year was my record with over 210,000 actual miles. My favourite program / airline is BA for its household program, and its 1st class beds!!! I have been a BA Gold and United Prem Exec for the last three years. I am now working back in the States this year and will be flying mostly United since it is my company's preferred carrier and maybe I can make 1K! |
I'm a new member here, and shadow suggested posting a bio -- here goes!
I'm a management consultant in healthcare who lives in the Boston area. Most (oops -- actually ALL) of my clients are several hundred/thousand miles away, so my frequent flyerness went from moderate to mega about 8 weeks ago, which made me interested in these forums and this site. Otherwise, my wife and I have four kids (twin boy/girl [10], two other daughters [4,6]) and two dogs (meatheads). While I love what I do and how I do it, leaving home is the hardest thing -- but my wife has become an expert at making the kids think that dad really comes home every night (I tried telling them the truth about my travel about a year ago, and the result was worse than the last act of Carmen, so we let them believe I come back late every day, and leave early every morning). Anyhow, really enjoy the thoughts and comments here! |
WOW Bear! Another news (or former) news hound! It's nice to have the fourth estate represented well here.
Ok folks, I created a WHO WE ALL ARE 5 so let's move over there |
Who We All are 5...please add to this one.

Hello. I live in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and have been flying -mostly Northwest- between 120,000 and 200,000 miles a year for the last twelve years. Until I retired last year I was director of Domestic Disaster Response for the Lutheran Church... so accomodations ranged from Marriotts (where I am a platinum member) to four-walls-no-roof. I am about to finish my twelfth and final year as a Northwest gold/platinum... February will take me back to silver. I am enjoying being home and working in the garden... and enjoying travelling now to places that are fun ( like Germany last month for the Christmas markets and good beer). I enjoy reading "Flyer Talk", and wish the accumulated wisdom had been around when I really needed it ! I went to a "travel seminar" once, which was supposed to teach us how to travel better for less. It did help some... it was the first I ever heard of back to backs, when that was still an unfamiliar practice. But I think some of you should be running the seminar. Keep up the good work, and good luck in your travels.

Not having DSL anymore (with a connection of at least 500Kbps), I am now working out of Seattle during the week and only have dialup. It's pretty sad. So I only go to certain areas on FT, and missed these threads. Does anyone really care who I am this late in the game?

Of course we do, jeffrey... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Bringing this forward ... seems like there are lots of new folks here these days. Welcome, all, and let us know a little about you.
[This message has been edited by dgolds (edited 02-14-2000).] |
Thanks for the BF, dgolds, or I never would have noticed this.
I'm one of those new folks, arriving when the Globe and Mail (Toronto's National Newspaper) had an article about FT. I'm 32 and live in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. I travel a little for work (I'm a computer technical support specialist), where we're not allowed to collect frequent flyer points, not even to donate to charity. I travel a LOT for my union, which does allow me to collect points, seeing as how they don't pay me for evening or weekend work. So I travel between YYG and Ottawa up to three times a month, with other trips to Toronto, Montreal, Moncton, Halifax, St. John's, Fredericton, Saint John, Quebec City, and Kingston on occasion. I never actually joined a frequent flyer program; a friend who worked for Canadian got annoyed with me and signed me up without my knowledge back when I was a student and flying standby all the time. Since then I've used points to travel all over Canada and the United States, as well as sending tickets to friends and family. Trips planned for this year include San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto, and possibly the Netherlands. |
As yet another new person to the Board, I'd like to introduce myself. I am a 29 year old social studies teacher in Willoughby, OH, a suburb on the eastside of Cleveland. I've just returned to Ohio after recently spending almost four years in Budapest, Hungary (two years as an English teacher in the Budapest public schools and two years working for a British venture capital firm). I loved life in Central Europe! It was a wonderful time to be there with all the recent changes. While living in Hungary, I accumulated the bulk of my miles, primarily flying Delta and BA, but also flying KLM/NW. Unfortunately, I never made it to any frequent flyer levels. Always a bit short. Most of my internal travel in Europe was via train. Since my return to OH two years ago, I've gone back to Hungary three times and have another trip planned for this summer. If anyone would ever like some info on Budapest, or Hungary in general, I'd be glad to help.
Thanks to a friend, E, I found out about FT. Even though I haven't posted much, I'm always interested in reading the latest. Randy, you've got a great operation! |
Guess it is about time I properly introduced myself...
On Friday I will turn 33. I live in CMH, where I was born and raised. Currently I am a sales manager for a large copier/printer manufacturer. When I am not working I like to travel, preferably to a place where the fish are easy to catch and the beer flows freely. A unique hobby of mine is entering sweepstakes. In the past 3 or so years I have won a ton of stuff -- mostly minor prizes but a few big ones too! My travel history only runs back about 5 years. I started out flying about 4 times a year to different cities on business. Each year the business travel seems to have increased. This year I already have 35 segments in the bag, with another 50 scheduled by March 20. Most of my flights are less than 500 miles, so I LOVE the fact that the airlines recognize segments as qualifiers for elite status. My carrier of choice is Delta. I also belong to the FF programs of United, TWA, America West, Continental, and US Airways. Something new to me this year has been my qualification for SM status on Delta. I LOVE it! I have read many of the stories about elite flying on FlyerTalk with interest and even a twinge of jealousy -- and now I actually get to live it! At the rate I'm going I will be PM by April -- a feat of which I will be quite proud... A common trait I may share with many of you is that I truely ENJOY flying. I like everything about it -- from check-in to baggage claim (unless my baggage is lost...) To me flying is an adventure. Not everyone gets to do it -- and even fewer get to do it on a regular basis. I have met some super people during my travels, and have also had some experiences of a lifetime. On many flights I entertain myself by just looking out the window at this big, beautiful world we live in. For some reason the sight never grows old. I have never been out of the US, so one of my goals this year or next is to fly somewhere overseas. London or Dublin seem like good first bets to me. I have no doubt that when I finally get to go my trip will be smooth sailing due to all of the tips and tricks I have learned from my fellow FlyerTalkers! Looking forward to eventually meeting many of you! Brian |
My turn.
I am 35, as you can tell by my UserName I live in Southern California. I am working for a Great Plains VAR (accounting software). We have shown Great Plains that we can handle large National & International accounts, so that means I get to travel. I didn't travel much before last year (a flight or two every few years), then the floodgates opened. I flew over 40 segments & will probably do the same this year. I am married with 2 beautiful children. When I travel I hit as many brewpubs as I can. For fun we are involved in a Living History group reenacting the 1800 fur trapper days. My Job is high tech but my relaxation is no tech. PerrySSocal ------------------ joyfully subversive |
Thanks guys! Now for the rest of you, there are still lots of other flyertalkers we don't know much about!

I've been lurking around this board for well over one-and-a-half years, but recently started posting last summer.
I'm a 27 year old Systems Engineer for one of the big data network hardware manufacturers. I was born in Melbourne, Australia, and raised in Long Beach, CA, and now call Irvine, CA home. My UserName reflects upon my favorite airport: SNA (John Wayne Orange County Airport), which is 10 mintues from my front door. I have always loved flying, airplanes, airports, and traveling, and have acquired a recent mileage addiction in the past four years I have been an Elite FF. I pretty much travel exclusively with American, and their oneworld partners. I'm Executive Platinum with AA, Gold with Hilton, and I'm going to work on Starwood Platinum this year. In addition to travel, I like Scuba Diving, Wine Collecting, Beer, Food, and Electronic Music. |
Having no food in the refrigerator, and trying to avoid going in to my office on Saturday Night to use the printer, I decided finally to get autobiographical on "Who we all are".
I'm 48, still single, and a proud native of New York City. Except that some years I spent twice the amount of time elswhere as here. I work (nominally) for a well-known media company that everyone has heard of http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif, and spent the years from 1975-1998 travelling to most of the news and sporting events that had any significance http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif. Almost all of this business travel was domestic, but about 20 years ago I got into the vacation travel habit, and have made at least 30 trips to the U.K. and a dozen to Caribbean islands during that period. Went to Hawaii on business in 1978, didn't go back until stopovers on the way to & from Tonga (long story) in 1991. I'm an original member of AAdvantage, joined Mileage Plus a few months later, & had reached Premier before they required requalification every year and then lost it. (But more recently have qualified for Premier or PremEx about 6 years running). These days, I'm on leave of absence from my erstwhile employer while I serve as Secretary-Treasurer of my local Union and Regional Vice-President of the parent organization (subject to occasional re-elections http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif). My business mileage is down to about 9 or 10 trips per year to meetings, conferences, conventions, etc., but I try to keep the numbers (and elite level) up with vacation and other personal trips, as time permits. Elite status is my only chance for upgrades, since we don't believe in spending the members' money on extravagances. [This message has been edited by RichG (edited 02-26-2000).] |
I don’t think anyone recognizes me, but after over 200 posts I decided to introduce myself. I don’t want to end up on "Who we all are 74" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif. Come’ on, I’ve been on this board since December ’98.
Ok, here it goes. I’ll hit 21 in May this year. I was born in Poland where I was raised, and at the age of 18 came to U.S where almost ¾ of my family lives in. At first I went to Cleveland, OH where I was supposed to be living with my aunt, but then I moved to Little Rock, AR and have been living here since then. My plan was to come to the U.S for Christmas and New Years Eve and then go back to Poland and finish my tour ( I’m a vocalist and play on 6 different instruments ), but my family did everything they could to change my mind. So, I decided to stay few more months, go to school, learn english ( I had no idea about english at all ) and go back home. Well, things change, people change, and finally my plan of going back home got changed too. I finished IELP ( Intensive English Language Program ) at the University of Arkansas and started to taking university classes. Last summer, I moved to Royal Palm Beach, FL and was supposed to go to Florida International University, but I moved back within 2 weeks! The reason I moved back was the girl I met in Chicago whom I visit at least every third week. It was too far, no way to go there by a car, fares more expensive, and also many other personal reasons. We’ve been together for over a year now and plan to move out to Florida in fall … this time TOGETHER http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif. Currently, I’m majoring in International Business at the University of Arkansas. I have one cat and right now I also have my mother who’s been visiting my for over a YEAR !! She promised that she’ll go back to Poland soon, but ... Ohh http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif Anyway, I started to travel frequently in April last year. I made Silver Medallion on Delta Air Lines within 5 months ( all laisure travel ) and use TW from time to time, as they have a lot of low fares from/to LIT. I’m not sure what else to say, but the one thing I’m sure of ( besides feelings to my fiance http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif, I’m sorry for that part, but she may read that ) is that I LOVE to travel ! I'm a miles, points and travel addict, and I'm really happy to know that I'm not the only ONE http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif I guess that’s pretty much what I have to say about myself. I would write more, but I don’t wanna bored you to death http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif By the way, RichG, my mom read your post and pretty much one of the things she noticed was that you are single http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ( she is too ). Thanks guys, this board is my second home and I’m really glad that I have that many friends. [This message has been edited by Damian (edited 02-26-2000).] [This message has been edited by Damian (edited 02-26-2000).] |
More great bios from everyone!
Damian: YOU could never bore us. IN fact personal stories are more interesting than some of the dribble that sometimes comes out on this board. And it's facinating that you are from Poland. My maternal grandparents are from Gdansk Poland and on my list of things to do is to go over to Poland and see if I have any relatives over there. Plus, you are a cat lover! PAWS UP! |
Catman,
There is about 30 people originaly from Poland living in Little Rock, and 2 of my friends are from Gdansk! One of them is going to Gdansk this summer. If you need more information about Gdansk and Poland, feel free to ask me. I really wanted to go to NYC for the FT get together, but I'm going to SEA with my mom on the 16th of March, so I won't be able to make it this time http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif |
Wow, I have really enjoyed these posts!
Damian, I also have a grandmother of Polish ancestry, but unfortunately I do not know where...switched back and forth between Russia and Poland over time, I am told. RichG: great to hear about you, I've read your posts since you warmly welcomed me to FT some months ago and I enjoy learning about your background. Seems that Islandcub is a fellow union person. |
I am indeed, Richard. It gets weird next month, though. Occasionally my employer loans me to the union to work for them. However, next month, my local office is loaning me to the union, who is in turn loaning me back to my employer at the HQ level because of expertise I have in Human Resources Management.
It's a weird feeling, but then again, I'm making it worth my time because I get to fly full fare (because the employer's paying) but I get to keep my frequent flyer miles (because we're using my union's travel agency). I wonder if we can get frequent flyer miles as a benefit in our next contract? :-) |
Hi,
I recently found this forum because of the LatinPass 1M promotion. There has been a lot of useful info here, and I hope to go on my first mileage run in May. Anyway, I'm 35, live in London, UK, but I am Dutch. I used to fly a lot (more than 100k miles per year), but I never got any miles for it, as I generally travelled on industry discounted fares. I recently changed jobs, and now work for an Internet company, where I do get miles, but fly much less. I am still KL Royal Wing, but will probably lose that next year - especially since I've started to take the ferry to Holland (but hey, I did make the gold level on their frequent sailor http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif program). |
Bringing this forward again...I've seen MANY new names here in the past few weeks.
Tell us about yourselves, please. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif And you can read other folks info at: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/000052.html http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/000196.html |
A little quiet here @ work so I thought I post a quick blurb. Heavy phones @ work and some traveling is involved. I work for a securities firm based in Jersey City, NJ (FYI Catman, that would be Grove Street)for which I am attached to a headset for most of the day. I travel to see accounts in the U.S. maybe 6x a year. Unfortunately it's hard to accumulate miles since none of the traveling is to the same place twice. I've tried to keep as much as I can on Continental but the in-house travel agent handles this travel and calls the shots as to the airlines used.
I also have what is probably one of the longest distance relationships around. He's a transplanted Long Islander who's been living in Denmark for the last 20 some-odd years. For the past 5 years that we have been seeing each other I've done more traveling with him then in all the years of my life previously! He's now doing about a week-a-month in Windsor, UK so we meet up there more than anywhere else (Virgin)besides here in NJ. He travels frequently as he lectures (mostly in Europe) and comes here for conventions (& me). We've traveled together to a number of these conventions/meetings. He's really the frequent flyer (SAS & United) and has taught me how to 1) not make a big deal about an upcoming trip (somewhat successful) and 2) travel lightly (much more successful, however, I think he taught me this skill so I could carry more stuff for him!!!). Favorite trips so far - South of France and steamer up the coast of Norway. Anyway I love this board, its the only one I in which I participate (mostly reading-sorry). I check in daily. I've picked up a lot of good tips, enjoyed the traveling stories and hearing about the lives of flyerTalk community. Thank you all for the information and education. p.s. I'm a major cat lover. I was owned by a big red tabby for many years named Cinnamon. I miss him terribly. [This message has been edited by Catherine Boyle (edited 03-11-2000).] |
Welcome on Board Catherine Boyle, you must come to a FT event some time!
|
Hello and MEOW Neighbor Catherine from Eddie, Yaz and Meow-self! I know Grove Street very well... That's the station I take to get home from teh Shop Rite near Newport Center.
And if you really love cats, your dear will not mind if you get another. I could not live without at least TWO cats!!! |

I forgot to mention that I might not fit so well in here as I am allergic to cats (although I do like them as persons). I do however love a good chunk of sirloin, done blue-to-very rare!
