Welcome Boatman and remember that there are no rules in how much you can contribute or when, every little bit helps.

And nice website by the way.

bryan at webflyer Jul 28, 1999 10:40 am

boatman: looks like we'll narrowly miss you at the Philly get-together on the 23rd at the Dock Street Brewery. Since you note that your plans may change, if they do so in a way that permits you to meet with us (Burkey, Shadow, DjLawman[?] and me) we're meeting at 7:00 pm.

One of these days I will post here, too.

Bringing this back to the top.

Also, wanted to provide the link to the picture gallery of fellow FlyerTalkers.

I know this link has been posted elsewhere, but tonight, when I actually went searching for it I had difficulty finding it, and "logically" I thought it might belong in this thread. (BlondeBomber - maybe you could edit your kickoff message to include the link as well?)

I'll be adding some pictures to the photo gallery over the next few days...I have pictures from Brian, Hammertoad, Wanderlust.

Any others? Please feel free to e-mail them to me.

Hi all. Guess it is time to post all about me. I admit, I still have to go back and finish reading WWAA2, actually i'll probably reread all of them as time goes by, quite a good idea baobob.

Anyway, I was born and raised at the end of the runway in STL. Well, actually at the top of a hill, making me so close to the planes I could almost jump onto the wing. Now the whole neighborhood except oddly my hilltop is gone, as the expansion plan will mean my house too will be under a new runway, or at least the approach. At 15 I moved to a chicago suburb, and didnt sleep for months without those planes. Anyway, went to university in chicago, got my dog Lucah a few weeks after getting robbed in 1991, worked a few years and went back to STL for grad school, taking Lucah and moving in with Dad. Made my first trip to Asia on a summer break, fell in love with the place and went back every chance I had. Started accumulating miles, and they come in handy living 20K miles from family. oops, left that out, graduated and moved to work in Bangkok, just as the asian economic crisis took off. My beloved dog is still in st louis, my dad would have killed me if I even mentioned bringing him, and well now my sisters dog moved in too while she is in the UK for a few years. I've been making 4-5 transpacific flights a year, and traveling around asia whenever i can get a few days. Used some of those miles for mom to visit last year, and now using some more to send my adopted thai parents to boston and chicago next spring.

Oh, and my mom laughed when I suggested she buy 67 cases of diet coke and ship them to me (while we have something called diet coke here, well, lets just say drinking diesel fuel has to be better) said I was crazy... so anyone so inclined as to enquire about shipping 67... oh never mind even you guys might think I'm nuts on that one.

So that's me, anyone else lurking out there, step up and lets hear about you.

cheers

Kal Aug 18, 1999 7:38 pm

Hi! I'm relatively new in posting here although I believed I officially registered late last year. Anyway....

Born in Singapore 32 years ago. Working as Financial Planner for 4 years after 4 years with a bank. Met my wife in the Singapore's U 10 years ago. Been married for 6 years and blessed with a 5-year-old boy.

I travel mostly on my own expense (with the family, of course). Although occasionally, the co. will send me to seminars.

Never was a FFP member because the now-discontinued Passages was lousy (my opinion). ... UNTIL I stumbled into this forum. I learned a lot from day 1 - lurking and reading the posts in this wonderful forum. I didn't know back then there are so many ways to earn miles AND without flying, too!!

So far, from 4th quarter last year, I became members in the following:

MP for star (coming to 20K)
AA for ow (to take advantage of 100K Promo soon)
CX as above
MH for M'sian domestic travels
NW (to take advantage of KLM Asia - Europe Promo - in dilemma after AA & CX introduce the 100K promo)
Hyatt - Platinum (I'm partial about GP like Beckles)
Hilton - Gold

I think that's all folks! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Rudi Aug 19, 1999 1:22 am

Kal: I'll be (for one night, my first) in SIN, arriving sunday aug-29 with LH 786 at 16:05 (from FRA), staying at the Marriott, leaving on monday aug-30 with TG 404 for HKG at 12:55.

Do you mind showing me the long bar at the Raffles for that classic drink (be my guest)? (I already asked SinFlyer, but I am without latest news from him.)

Kal Aug 19, 1999 8:22 am

Rudi: If the timing doesn't clash with my appointment with my client, I'll be more than happy to show you our overhyped, overrated & overpriced (if you ask for my frank opinion) Raffles Hotel. I'll show you the Long Bar & Ah Teng's (a 'cute' old-Singapore-type coffee shop). Just tell me the time.

dg1 Aug 19, 1999 8:23 am

I'm (almost) 23 and I work for a large computer company for which I travel extensively domestically. I live in Pittsburgh (but only technically since I spend much more time in Raleigh and other cities), and have been married for nearly two years. My wife doesn't like all my travelling but she's definitely beginning to enjoy the extra service I get for being elite.... she's going to refuse to fly coach soon enough http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I also have three cats (two for a while, got the third just recently) named Slash, Dash and Jackie and no kids. Internationally I travel to Canada often and been to Paris in February this year for Valentine's Day. Next year I hope to hit London and the year after that Rome (I don't particularly like international travel except for the mad miles).

Welcome to the boards. So your from Pittsburgh eh, baze and I will be doing some installation work at the Seagate facility in Pittsburgh on the 19th to 24th of Sept, and staying at the Hilton. Would like to extend an invitation to you and all FTer's who will be in the city during that time to join us for a cocktail or dinner during that stay. Just let us know what if any time is convenient for you and we could make it happen. http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Cheers Scott

Rudi Aug 19, 1999 9:33 am

Kal, thank you, I just emailed you and hope something works out for you (and me).

doc Aug 19, 1999 10:34 am

Just like you apparently, my wife loves to get a Singapore Sling at Raffles, despite knowing that she can perhaps do better with price and quality both elsewhere! Enjoy the Marriott and all of Singapore.

stevevan Aug 19, 1999 10:55 am

Hi there. Thought I would put my first post in here. I'm from Ottawa (YOW), Canada. I have lived here or nearby for most of my life. I'm 28 and will be happily married next summer. I am a database administrator, currently working for a large company, hoping to go independent. I have done some international travel but mostly domestic.

If anyone is ever in this great capital, let me know!

Steve

Pittsburgh mini-meet sounds good. You should probably start a topic on Flyertalk community so folks know. I know Indogulf is also from the area and we wanted to get together some time.

I'm coming back from LA the 21th at 6am (red eye) so Wed or Thu the 22/23 is good for me. The 24th I'm attending dinner with my wife (for hre work) at either the Westin William Penn or the Airport Marriott (the latter being five minutes from my place -- here's hoping).

I assume you mean the Hilton next to Point State Park downtown, right?

Yes it's the Hilton next to the park. The 22nd or 23rd sounds good to us as we leave for the Seattle get together with Punki et all on the morning of the 24th. I will post a thread under Itinerarys in the coming week.

Cheers Scott

MarkB Aug 19, 1999 5:50 pm

Okay, I registered here back in January but only started posting regularly in the past week.

My real name is Mark Betton. I am 27, was born in Shrewsbury, UK where I still live (I have no ambition!) and work as an project manager for and electrical installation company. We work all over the UK mostly in the food industry and will soon be working worldwide if all goes to plan. I'm not really a frequent flier as of course, my travel is for pleasure. I have friends in Asheville, NC which is a lovely little city and fly to the US to stay with them as often as I can afford. The USA is a wonderful place and I only wish I could travel there more often.

I could really do with a new job that would involve fly to the US once or twice a month! http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I'll be there unless I'm not in Pittsburgh http://talk.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif I fly out to LA for an extended weekend the weekend before and I have a feeling my job will ensure I travel as soon as I get back to 'make up for lost time'. I actually have only been downtown twice; once just passing through on a public bus and once to see the Nutcracker at Heinz hall. I much prefer being able to get around and park at will in Robinson and Moon Township, near the airport.

Rudi Aug 20, 1999 8:41 am

MarkB: I am not sure, but I think, back in 1964 I stayed, on a tennis promotion tour, on our way to Cardiff, at a Tudor mansion/pension (a 16th century house?) in/near your home-town - is this lovely place still there?

Scott the flier Aug 20, 1999 9:23 am

dg1

We'll work out something closer to the airport which is convenient for all if your available.

Cheers Scott

MarkB Aug 20, 1999 11:00 am

Rudi: I'm sure the place will still be around. Shrewsbury is a medeivel market town so we have many buildings dating from that era. I you can remembera little more about the place I will look into it.

Rudi Aug 20, 1999 11:49 am

ok -Gisela found the old fotos, Tudor House or Hotel (?),Fish Street, Shrewsbury (it was in the very center of your old/medieval town).

MarkB Aug 20, 1999 12:16 pm

Rudi: Indeed you coudln't get much closer to the centre than Fish Street! I know Fish Street well, but I can't place Tudor House/Hotel. I'm wondering if it was what is now called The Three Fishes Inn. I will take a look tomorrow.

Rudi Aug 20, 1999 12:29 pm

I stayed there together with Stanley Matthews jun (son of the famous english soccer player, the father still played for England when he was over 40, the son was then english tennis champion, back in 1964, the year Churchill died).

the 'Tudor' must be the first or last house of that Fish street.

Nanook Aug 20, 1999 1:35 pm

Three is my lucky number and this is WWAA 3, so it's my turn to post who I am.

My name is Nancy B. and I live in San Jose, CA. I'm not working now (by choice) so travel only three to four times a year. But I looooove to travel and would do more if only I had the money (wouldn't we all?). I've been married to my husband Karl-Heinz for 20 years this coming December. I lived in San Francisco in 1979 and met Heinz when he was just a bartender on the Royal Viking Sea. I used to visit the ship with friends when it would dock in San Francisco and Heinz and I got to know each other from those visits. He decided he wanted to try life on land once again and so he signed off in San Francisco. I didn't know this until I ran into him while attending a bon voyage party on the ship and saw him sitting in the bar having a drink. I knew he couldn't drink and work at the same time so asked him if he was off duty that evening. He told me he now lived in S.F. and was trying to find my phone number and I gave it to him never really expecting to hear from him again. A few days later, he called and said the house he was living in was being sold and could he come and stay at my apt. for a few days. He seemed so nice (and he's cute, too) that I said yes. Finally, after two weeks of wining and dining me, treating me better that any bloke ever treated me (those Austrians really can romance a girl!), he said he had to leave the country because his visa was expiring. He'd go back to Austria and try to come back in the country again. I didn't want to lose him, and I knew his friend got married to an American girl just to get a green card, so I offered to marry him with the understanding that in 2 years (which was the length of time required to stay married and keep your green card at that time)--in 2 years we'd get divorced. So after two weeks of really getting to know each other, we found ourselves in front of Judge Williamson at San Francisco City Hall getting married, with my old boyfriend as one of our witnesses. After about a month and a half of marriage, I was going off to work one morning (he was still looking) and he said, "You know, after two years I don't think I want to get divorced." I was so happy I said, "I don't either but didn't want to be the first to say it." So here we are 20 years later and still merrily rolling along. He's now a hotel general manager, and enjoys his work and I get involved some of the time in his projects.
I'm trying to figure out what I want to do next (work-wise) as staying home isn't as much fun as I thought it would be. Anyone with ideas of my getting a job somewhere in the travel industry...not a hotel, though. It's not as glamorous a life as one would think, but it does have its great perks.

MarkB Aug 20, 1999 1:50 pm

Rudi: Wow! Sir Stanley Matthews' son? Cool!

I've been thinking a little more and did a bit of net searching. Tudor House is @ 2 Fish Street.

Gosh! What a long reply I made!
I got so wordy (comes from being born in Texas), that I forgot to thank BlondeBomber (who, just looking at the name, I thought was a woman) for urging us all to post who we are.
Thanks, too, to bokich for posting the link to the picture page. That's how I found out BlondeBomber is a man. What a friendly bunch of frequent flyers.

FlierLie Aug 21, 1999 9:40 am

Hi, everybody. My name is Jim, and I live in southern Rhode Island with my wife and 5 year old daughter. We are expecting another child in November.

I am currently designing control systems for a small company specializing in machinery for the extrusion industry. The job requires me to travel domestically and internationally. I have been "lurking" for a few months, but only started posting recently.

Nanook Aug 21, 1999 12:02 pm

Well, FlierLie, welcome. This is a great place so post away.
If we don't hear much from you in November, we'll know why now.

shadow Aug 21, 1999 9:45 pm
