It looks like we have some great ideas. Unfortunately I am pretty much tied up and travelling until the 7th so can't narrow down a race or ideas until after then.

The idea of a relay crossed my mind - baring that I vote for a non-North America destination - adds to the FT flavour.

I like this idea too. Maybe we should look at a 10k (6.2 miles for you non-metric folks) run so that more people can participate. This would allow non-runners or those that have run long ago to get into running condition fast and then participate.

Great idea, as long as I can earn on AA en route from LON.

Or to really frustrate the FlyerTalk community, it could be somewhere served by an airline that partners with none of the major allianeces....

An excellent idea!

May I humbly suggest a 5 to 10 mile race so that the more casual runners can participate. Although Bay to Breakers would be great, anything more than 10K participants could be difficult from an in-race logistic standpoint (starting and staying together, as well as finding people at the finish).

Usually early February is the Gasparilla 15K in TPA and the Gate River Run 15K is in JAX on the second Saturday in March. Both have about 8,000 runners. Since we spend so much time in the air, is there a 10K/15K near the House of Miles?

Started 5 Bostons- only finished 4. That darned broken leg wouldn't go more than 17 miles.

Wuss.

Seriously, a running DO sounds like a lot of fun. A lot of big-city marathons also feature a 1/2-thon and/or shorter races. Or...we all head to the 2004 Run For The Seals in the Marin Headleads.

I'm running the Twin Cities Marathon this weekend...

That was my thought as I read through the posts prior to yours.

By the way, the Twin Cities Marathon was AWESOME. Perfect weather, beautiful course, and HUGE crowd support. That town throws a great marathon! I'd recommend it for any gathering you might have in mind, and they even have a 10-miler for you speed demon sprinter-types.

I enjoyed Minnie so much, I'm even thinking about going back for Grandma's (Duluth) in '04.

Well as one who just came from my first DO, I am not a huge fan of going to another one, or arranging one. If there is a run arranged that I can take part in, I would probably do it, but given the past weekend I honestly don't think I would go out of my for an event again. Too little vacation time.

I've never been to an FT Do, so out of morbid curiousity I'll ask what was wrong with the one you went to...

*bump*

I just got confirmation that my entry for Grandma's 2005 (June 18th, Duluth) has been accepted. Anybody else here running it? They accept about 9,000 entries: odds are, I'm not the only FT'er running it!

Still up in the air as to what my fall race will be. Last year I did Flying Pig in May (Cincy) and then a bunch of 1/2's in the fall. This year, I think I want to do a fall full 'thon.

Well I was in HNL in mid-Dec when the HNL marathon was on, looked interesting but the early start is a bit rough. Could not even get up to watch it

They do that one early to get most of the runners across the finish line in cool weather. That race is very popular among charity and recreational runners (the 4-5 hour crowd) so they kind of have to do it early, or else they'd have way too much work for the medical staff.

I guess if you fly in 1 or 2 days before the race and keep your body somewhat on your home time zone, it wouldn't be too bad.

We always used Hawaiian jetlag to our advantage. Day 1 - drive up Haleakala (sp?) at 5AM to catch sunrise. Day 2 - Road to Hana - get going early and you can take frequent hike-breaks or swim-breaks and still stay ahead of the bus tours. Day 3 - Early morning long run south of Wailea. By Day 4, you can kinda sleep in till 8AM or so...

From this point of view the Hong Kong Marathon would be a possible Event for a Running DO. This year, it on February 27th, so a little bit late for planning a Running DO. The HK marathon has distance of 10, 21,1 and 42,195 km, so it might be interesting for the short and the long distande runners.

By the way, I read in ths thread, there was a question of a Marathon in Singapore. The Singapore Marathon takes place in Decmeber, but as far as I know only full distance of 42,195 km.
