SIN Mid Jan 2003

While it most likely will not qualify as an offical "DO", I've been in contact with 3 or 4 other FT'ers who have plans to be in SIN sometime between Jan 15-21, 2003. Nothing has been set yet (except for flights!), so all and any recommendations are welcome. This will be my first time there, so I'll bow out to the more experienced among you http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

transpac Oct 22, 2002 4:58 pm

I'd be up for dinner on Saturday night, 18 January, but am flexible on both 18 & 19 January.

bseller Oct 23, 2002 4:47 am

My first time as well....and looking forward to it. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Dinner on Saturday the 18th sounds very good, but either 18 or 19th would work.....
Best wishes.

Instead of SIN, several of us are looking at BKK around that time. (Actually earlier; that's MLK weekend, when I want to be somewhere else.) Just waiting for the fares to drop.

kawoh Oct 23, 2002 6:09 am

Hi,

I'll be in BKK for 5 nights from the 23 Jan if anyone wants to have a FT catch up. I'll be staying at the Hilton, so will hopefully have exec floor access to bring a few FT'ers up.

Agreed to both BKK or SIN.

Mauld, did you manage to get a cheap airfare to SIN?

mauld Oct 24, 2002 4:52 am

Depends on what you consider cheap.... I'm of the spoiled sort, who would rather face an eternity of non travelling than sit 'behind the curtain' on a trip this long. I got a $1184 CO HoKeY fare which I was able to upgrade to BF at time of purchase using miles. As far as rooms go, I'm paying S$ 180 (US$ 90) at the Sheraton Towers for the first night, S$ 220 at the Hyatt for night #2 & using a Free Night at the Hyatt for #3. I know there have been some $500-600 fares on UA and others, but they required a 6 night stay and may possibly have been (HORRORS) un-upgradeable.
Are you thinking of joining us??? The more the merrier http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Yes I would love to join the SIN trip, but my version of cheap to SIN is in the 500-600 range on UA (w/o the 6 night stay).

The fare guru Kiethguy came up with a SIN run on CO for in the 500-600 range but I don't know if this was an upgradeable fare.

mjm Oct 25, 2002 10:18 am

Well it certainly will not do to have this event being a strictly East Coast/ Chicago affair so count me in to represent the Left Coast and Asia. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Arriving on the 17th very late and staying at the IC 17-20.
Michelle, I will also be arriving into SFO on 1 Nov. about lunchtime from Tokyo. I need to be in the East Bay by late afternoon, but might be up for a coffee someplace (can easily enough swing by the City on the way in from the airport). E-mail me what your your day looks like that day and maybe we can catch up briefly to say Hi and get caffeine?

Willie, are we looking at possibly breaking bread for the first time in Southeast Asia instead of over a mess of BBQ? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Looking forward to getting back to SIN and hooking up with you guys.

Currently all cheapie fares on United in January require a 6 day minimum stay.

Please would anyone post here if they find this situation changes.

Thanks!

Welcome Aboard mjm http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
How did you decide where you'd stay on this run? Is the IC centrally located, expensive, or anything in particular?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
Best wishes.

</font>

Thanks for the welcome. I'm very pleased to finally be joining one of the trips to SIN.

I picked the IC for a couple reasons. It is where I stayed for a week a month during the two years I was commuting to Singapore, and its kind of a second home. I spent enough time there to attain their Ambassador status which entitles me to a suite upgrade, a free mini-bar, and a generally warm welcome.

All that aside, I think their 21 day advance purchse online room rate of S$154 is pretty good. During the time we are there though, they are doing some rennovation work on the higher floors so the exec. floors are largely out of commission.

It is located in Bugis Junction which is not central but not non-central. It is two subway stops from Orchard Road, and directly adjacent to Little India. Nothing is very far from anything else in central SIN so I think it is always good advice to stay at the hotel there that affords you the best extras, is cheapest, or has the most amenities to pamper yourself with on a trip that is often "just because".

Many good choices there. I know and like the Grand Hyatt (central, great restaurant, and consistent), the Ritz Carlton (perhaps the most complete high quality hotel in SIN/SE Asia), and the Conrad (a perennial FT favorite for its quality, deals, rooms and HH tie-in).

Is there particular chain, type of hotel you are looking for? Some options are much cheaper and have fewer frills but as it is SIN, these will be clean and safe also. For these I would do a Google search for hotel travel agencies in SIN. A bunch of them pop up and you can get a decent idea of what is out there.

If I can offer any assistance, or if you simply have a question, I am happy to try to answer it. Many SIN run specialists around here so you'll likely see some good ideas offered.

Looking forward to meeting in SIN http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

How many of you guys are part of the CO/NW run? As I consider this; I would consider going when the CO FT'ers are running.. I've never done one like this before.. What a pain in the tookus (sic?) to plan

Been to SIN once already....BKK fares are too danged expensive (still)....Hey, how about EZE?

ozstamps and Joh have been raving about Buenos Aires since their recent visit there.

I checked fares SFO-EZE on UA and AA and cheapest fares for the January dates I checked are $650-ish (including taxes). Mileage varies depending on routing but can easily be upwards of 15,000.

Just a thought.... For those of us "wimpy mileage runners" who really want a combo mileage run/vacation/socializing opp. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

That would be great, although seeing as it is SIN, we should probably say "slurp noodles" instead of "breaking bread" http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Is not going to happen in SIN until UA nixs the stay requirement on the cheapie SIN fare http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I might be able to hook up w/you in SFO, IF I can work out some personal biz there. I'll keep you posted via email if something works out.

I'll be there with Mrs. Cranrob, at the tail end of a trip to Thailand & Cambodia. Jan 18-19 to pig out.

For those of you looking for $500-600 UA fares to SIN w/o the 6-day minimum, I just priced out a run for the dates 12/11-16, PDX-LAX-NRT-SIN-NRT-LAX-PDX for $576. Perhaps you'll be able to find a sans-6-day-min. on other dates. Good luck.

wedding Jan 17-26. We're planning a stag party in BKK http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif so I might be able to do both !

seanthepilot Nov 3, 2002 1:03 am

My January SIN fun starts on Jan 12th when I arrive on UA805 (after 3 nights in HKG). I'm meeting a friend who arrives on the 17th. Haven't decided if I'm staying in SIN til then, but would love to get together.

Departing on Feb 12th through HKG-NRT-HNL-etc

I think the 6 day stay applies to most fares for travel after Dec 25th.

If anyone finds a short SIN run fare in the next 3 weeks, I'm still looking to purchase one more.

Mrs IK and myself, plan on being in HKG the 17th through the 20th. Like others have posted I am waiting until UAL loads the good fares for January to purchase the tickets, so we may very well route through SIN during that trip depending on what the fare rules look like.

Put together a little webpage for our adventure.

The link is:

http://www.twics.com/~mjm/sinruna.html

I think I have the info correct and it is all taken from postings in this thread and the Itineraries Forum. If I have incorrectly included someone, left anyone off the list, or if you simply wish to add some details to the page, drop me an e-mail.

Looking forward to seeing everybody soon.

mjm, cool as usual,

looking forward to "breaking noodles" with everyone.

I'm in, although only for the night of Saturday the 18th (arriving midnight)

Have never been to HKG and could not resist the cheap flight to get there from SIN.

Special shout out to Transpac on the heads up for no 6 day stay minimum on UA!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

SanDiego1K Nov 10, 2002 5:09 pm

I've joined the asylum.

Jan 16
CLD-LAX-NRT-SIN (arriving on UA 881 on Jan 17)

Jan 20
SIN-NRT-LAX-CLD (departing on UA 882)

I was able to immediately upgrade the return. The outbound is waitlisted - which based on recent history will mean at the gate.

I decided to go for two Hilton credits.
Jan 17 - Hilton Singapore
Jan 18, 19 - Conrad Singapore

Here's an oddity. For that particular weekend, fares ex-SAN are $1500. Yet the identical routing, except with the originating flight CLD-LAX instead of SAN-LAX, the fare drops to $596. Bizarre! Usually, it is the reverse.

My thanks to transpac for finding the fare and to mjm for putting up a cool website, so that I knew the dates for people to travel. I'll see you in the RCC in NRT, mjm!

mjm Nov 10, 2002 5:20 pm

Willie,

Right on. See you there for the slurping of noodles.

Carol,

Most excellent! NRT RCC it shall be. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I think I shall add a NRT RCC rendezvous list to the webpage in the next few weeks. Any other takers?

I'd love to join you, but need a little help.

So far, the best I can do from JFK is $782.

That would be:
Jan 16 UA 3 JFK/SFO 5:30 arrive 8:57pm
Jan 17 UA837/881 SFO/NRT/SIN

Jan 20 UA 882 SIN/NRT/LAX
spend the day in LA

Jan 21 UA 8 LAX/JFK 7:00am

Can the mileage guru's help me to get a lower price?

I have some flexibility timewise, but of course would prefer to travel SIN/LAX with SanDiego1K. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks. You can e mail me if you'd like.
Dan

mjm Nov 10, 2002 8:13 pm

The website is now updated to include sunil, Sweet Willie, and SanDiego1K.

Dan, keyboard poised and ready to add your name too. ;-)

As we now have two and maybe three arriving near midnight on the 18th I will also add to the webpage (Dinner Plans section), in the next week or so, a rendezvous point for and list of people interested in hitting Lau Pa Sat (24 hour local food court) for some late night noodle slurping.

NW has just lowered its PDX-SIN fares in "K" from $632 to $601-$604. Save three bucks by overnighting at LAX. Or one could turn it into a 20,000 mile extravaganva by forcing layovers in HNL in both directions and as a bonus have 7 hours in Narita. BKK is now $730 in "K", an open jaw PDX-SEA-NRT-BKK land
SIN-NRT-SEA-PDX is $676. Yesterday cheapest BKK was $1700 as a Y26.

Anyone going to be in BKK on January 16 or in SIN the evening of January 27? Happy to get together if anyone is around. Tentative plans call for above routing which is booked with the land portion probably being:

BKK-Chiang Mai - BKK - Hat Yen - HKT - KUL - JHB (Expedia has it for $298). Does anyone know if it can be done for less by booking in BKK? And, if so please provide suggestions as how to get it done.

bseller Nov 12, 2002 5:10 am

mjm - Many thanks for a very fine website!!
(I wish I had the techno know-how to do that sort of stuff!!)
In any event, my hotel(s) will be: Sheraton for the short "overnite" on Friday, transferring to the Swisshotel Stamford for Sat/Sun/Mon....that is, unless something better comes available! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
I also see that several of the runners will be on UA 881 from NRT to SIN on the 17th. Since I've not had the pleasure of meeting any of those folks.....Just wanted to point out that I'm expecting to sit in 17A....Perhaps someone will be in 17B http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Best wishes. AND: NRT RCC it is!!!!

[This message has been edited by bseller (edited 11-12-2002).]

Sweet Willie Nov 12, 2002 6:36 am

Had my travel agent look into hotel prices for the night of the 18th.

Hilton $93US
Conrad $90US
Sheraton $104US

Her rates were lower than I could get online.

Even though my focus is on *wood properties for next year, seeing as there is negative treatment of plats at the Sheraton that I've read about in the *wood forum AND THE CONRAD IS ONLY $90 makes my decision very easy.

I'll be at the Conrad on the 18th!!!

techgirl Nov 12, 2002 7:30 am

Ugh... my arm is SO easily twisted. Put me down as a maybe... I've still got SWUs to think about using and it looks like I will already be in SEA either the week before or the week after this little jaunt....

The Website is now updated to show Sweet Willie's flights and hotel, as well as bseller's hotels.

Sweet Willie, I have made the assumption on the itineraries page that you are on the UA flight out of SIN for HKG. If that is the case you will likely be leaving the hotel at about 4:30am. If, after you get in at midnight, we head out for some local grub at Lau Pa Sat it is likely you will not get back to the room before 3:00. At this point you might have enough time for a shower and to grab your bag. If you or any of the others who might join this little tour and who have only a few hours in SIN need a place to dump suitcases while we eat and grab a shower before heading to the airport, you are welcome to use my suite at the Inter-Continental and thereby save yourself a few bucks. If your flights are other than I have guessed and you are going to have time to snooze, then in the very best Latella-esque voice, ...."Nevermind". http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I have also noted both IK in Seattle's exit from and techgirl's addition to the "Maybe" list.

On both the outbound and inbound parts of this run, there are going to people who will cross paths in the NRT RCC. As promised, I shall add a NRT RCC meeting time and list to the website in the next few days.

Punki, c'est la vie, but I shall hoist one to you in the direction of LAS whilst at 35,000 feet. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

bseller, On that flight on the 17th, the gentleman in 15H will be me. Stop by for a coffee or chat.
