Why does not canceling a trip to Bali mean that you don't value life? I really think you have blown this way out of proportion. No one here as shown that they are insensitive to the tragedy that occurred. No one has posted anything resembling an attempt to take advantage of the situation in a negative way.

You don't think that now is the time to support Bali and I think it is just the opposite. They need support now more than ever. Canceling planned trips there is only going to worsen the situation for the Balinese people.

There is no need for people jumping on each other. Some people handle things differently then others so please don't be upset by what people post.

Wow, quite a thread - i never meant to get that kind of emotion rolling. When I want to rile the masses I usually make a full blown attempt at it. Ok, without wishing to appear unsensitive, I feel for the Balineses more than you can imagine. Come friday, I would estimate conservitively 40% of all workers will be given thier cards and little money. Yes I want a cheap room rate dave, but thats cos I am traveling, sleeping in hostels and accepting the good graciousness of others (like yourself). I will no doubt end up blowing a chunk of the savings I make in the bars that are probably deserted right now.

While I may come across as brash, and occasionally a touch arrogant, I am not without feeling.

Now, after that sentimental post I must go and type a trip report involving a crying baby, the wing of a 747 and duct tape

As for traveling after 9/11, I went to Europe three different times from Sept 11 to December of last year.(all leisure trips) Getting from 60-80K frequent flier miles on US Airways on each trip to Europe was great! (thanks to FT! ) And helping out the airline at the time flying them when the planes were nearly empty. Of course, setting in the front of the plane was quite nice!

I also traveled alot right after the Gulf way. Alot of people called me a little crazy but getting loads of free travel & miles was quite rewarding. Just imagine what I could have done if FT were around then!

Bottom line: Go if you can. You will help their economy and not have the crowds.

Jon - Doesn't your schedule have you leaving from Austrailia to go to Bali? Do you know if it is a country-wide ban on flights to Asia or just a decision Quantas has made.

I can't wait for your trip report on Bali. In the meantime, I didn't agree with whoever's decision it was to send Quantas' planes to evacuate people, like what happended in Bali warrants the same footage as what was shown happening during the last days (pulling out) of Nam. And then, to refuse to continue scheduled flights to Asia, as planned, like they can make that decision for a democratic, free-thinking people, and if it was the decision of Quantas, like they have the dictorial right to make that decision for their customers, it's doing just what the terrorists want.

If it wasn't the decision of the Australian government but, instead, all this the bright idea of Quantas, I would love to support an opposite airline.

Do you know, is there some other airline that is making a point of showing that they will not go with the orchestrated fear the terrorists are conducting them to feel, down the path of terrorism, if not as leaders, but as followers (however passive), something that every leader needs to lead, especially terrorists.

Is there some other airline in Australia that IS flying to Asia i.e. doing their part to NOT contribute to terrorism in this way?

Was it ex-LHR? Because we both know the man in charge of duct-taping AA's 767s there.

I may be late to this, but I think that Jongar should be applauded for continuing his plans. How does not running away and letting the terrorists win show disrespect for this killed?? I moved a large meeting to New York in October of last year - it was not to save money but to show support for the city and to drive away the notion that we would all just allow the city to die. Anyway, just my two cents.

Some people it seems consider the Washington D.C area to be under siege. I just talked to my boyfriend who is scheduled to fly in late tomorrow evening for work. His company has put restrictions on all work related travel to this area because of the sniper shootings. He had to talk them into letting him continue with his scheduled trip!

I live here and it is scarey, but I am not going to hide under a rock. Have I changed my habits at all? Yes. I think about where I get gas, I make a point to be aware of my surroundings when I park my car, and when I park for shopping, etc, I run from my car to my destination. Hey, I need the exercise anyway! And the balinese people depend on tourism. People shouldn't let them be another casuality of terrorism.
