Flying to Paris on Sept. 11.

I booked it and "Sept.11" didn't even come to mind at the time.

Fliers, Airports, Airlines Prepare To Observe a Tough Anniversary

When Larry Unger learned he had a meeting to attend in New York after Labor Day, he made a point of doing what many would rather avoid: He booked a ticket for a flight on Sept. 11.

A 47-year old pharmaceutical executive who grew up in Manhattan and now lives in Portland, Ore., Mr. Unger says he knew several of the passengers who died in the terrorist attacks last year, and adds that while he could have flown on another day, he felt "compelled" to book a flight on the one-year anniversary.

"I haven't allowed Sept. 11 to impact my travel plans thus far, and I can't see any reason to do so now," says Mr. Unger, who says he has flown more than 155,000 miles on United Airlines since January. He doesn't think he will alter his routine, though he's well aware that Sept. 11, 2002 won't be a day like any other.

"I fully expect that I will find it quite difficult to contain my emotions and composure on the plane," he says. "But what better and more appropriate place can there be to think about the tragic events of one year ago?"

Although airline officials won't publicly discuss the number of passengers flying that day, privately most admit that bookings appear light. However, they point out that it's still too early to say things won't change, and also note that Sept. 11, 2002 will be a Wednesday -- typically one of the slowest travel days of the week.

But even passengers who might normally find themselves at the airport mid-week are making other plans. Some say they fear not terrorism, but excessive media hype, fake bomb threats or additional shows of force at security checkpoints.

Bravo, Larry Unger and all other Americans who continue to live thier lives as normally as possible.
If we let the fear of terror adversely impact our lives, then the terrorists have achieved their goal.

Cutting Back Their Sept. 11 Flight Schedules As Travelers Stay Away

Some of the nation's largest airlines are cutting back their Sept. 11 flight schedules, bowing to Americans' reluctance to fly on the anniversary of the attack.

American and United, the two biggest carriers, are making unspecified reductions for that day based on weak bookings. No. 3 Delta is trimming flights for the entire work week of Sept. 9-13.

I flew constantly through the last quarter of 2001, including as soon as flights were permitted cross border on the 15th -- on AA at that -- so have no hesitation to do so on September 11th this year, if business requires it. I have to be in Edmonton for Friday the 13th, and had planned to book to fly on the 12th. Meetings might move it up a day to fly out on the 11th, will have to see. But I think accumulating 40K qualifying miles on AA after September 11th says I did my bit to keep the faith when it really mattered.

Today's news reports indicate both AA and UA are trimming flights on the 11th in expectation of low bookings.

I still think that with the fares they are charging for flying 9/11 no wonder no one is flying.. I tried but they priced me out of the market

I flew last Sept. 11 and have no desire to fly this one. I'm not frightened - I think the day will be as safe as any other - it's just not something I care to do. Tough to explain why ... I guess just too many bad memories that I think would overwhelm me if I was doing the same thing as last year.

I like both of mdtony's ideas - the gifts and flying west over the dateline to avoid Sept. 11. Had I have thought of that - and didn't have travel plans a few days later that would interfere - I would do that this year and every year too.

Britons boycott 11 September air travel

Thousands of Britons are choosing not to fly on the first anniversary of the 11 September terrorist attacks on the United States, it was revealed today.

Reluctance to take to the air has resulted in British Airways cancelling 24 of its 78 transatlantic flights on that day. A London to Barbados flight and a Barbados-London service have also been cancelled.
