What's the most unusual thing you've done just for miles?

I once charged a very expensive funeral. A relative died and as executor, I had to make the arrangements. The funeral home wanted immediate payment, as in before the service, so I had my credit limit raised (they were a bit surprised, but very accomodating) and just charged the whole thing.

There is already a long and classic thread on this issue. I think it was started by Punki. Unfortunately search is broke right now and I cant find it - a search under buzz for articles written by Punki returns a total of two threads from 1999!

Speaking of death, my father died today and I don't even have to fly anywhere to be with him. This may not be appropriate for this forum but I feel better by saying it. Sorry, if I offended anyone.

condolences, spider . . . when a friend's mom died years ago, she said "it's not easy being an orphan -- at any age." While I'm not at the orphan stage yet, as I still have one parent, I do know it ain't easy. My mother-in-law died four weeks ago.

Spider:

I'm really sorry about your father... My father died a couple of months ago, so I appreciate how tough it is to go through...

My thoughts are with you...

Condolences to everyone who had/have a friend/relative pass away. My sister passed away this past April 3. Looking at very expensive last fares (to MBS airport in MI from LAX), I instead used 25K United miles & took first available flight on award. (sister passed away at 3AM, got 10:30AM flight out same day). My sister went with me to Germany in Oct. 1996, our trip was mentioned at funeral. After funeral, resolved to travel more & enjoy life. Since April,I flew to Cincinnati, Toronto, Oakland,Phoenix ($600 UA bump in Phoenix is funding 4 more tickets --- 3 already bought!), London, Miami, & Minneapolis, all leisure. Thanks to FT, my ticket costs have been low. Have cheap tickets booked to Atlanta, Portland, Dallas, Milwaukee, Detroit & Columbus--all separate trips & leisure. Most tickets are $150 or less. (some near free with bump certs! ) Some say I travel too much, but I enjoy it. My late sister would be proud of me. (hopefully I am not boasting too much, here) Thank you for letting me speak & do enjoy traveling, FT, & mileage runs & much more not mentioned.

Condolences offered from me too Spider. In a way, your mentioning something that personal seems to reflect the ever-growing relationships amongst us community of Flyertalkers. Thanks too for helping out on that crazy-fare Paris thread while the battle was still being fought.

Spider,

My condolences to you and your family.

Also know that your post was not and is not offendable by any stretch. I believe that it took a lot of courage to hit that "submit reply" button. Please know that our thoughts will be with you.
