I am planning to be on my way to Istanbul on September 11th. I think there was a thread very much like this in the AA forum a while back, and I think the general consensus was that people would treat the day like any other, and not be put off flying.

I get back from SIN the night before... but if I'm needed on a client site that week, it is likely I would travel.

Interesting thread. Would not bother me at all, but I suspect it would affect a very large slab of less regular travellers. I imagine there will be far lower than usual loads that day on US carriers.

If I need to fly, I will fly. If I don't, I won't. At this point, I don't know what I will be doing on that day. I may be in New Zealand skiing, so if anything happens, I will definitely be out of the loop. And if they shut down the travel system again, I'll be stuck on the other side of the world. That actually might not be a bad thing.

I won't fly that day. Mostly to put my family at ease, partially because I don't want to deal with insane hyped-up security that day (I flew LHR-ORD on the 1 year anniversary of Pan Am 103, and it was just ridiculous - I can imagine what ORD will be like on 9/11/02). But since it's a Wednesday, there's a good chance that I'll already be at a client site and will fly around it, like the 9th and 13th.

The following week I'll be on vacation and am headed for Switzerland. I tried to book award seats on UA for Sept. 13--Friday!--but couldn't get them so opted for the next-closest available date--Sept. 11. I booked the transatlantic seats without considering the date. I'm still hoping that waitlists for Friday the 13th clear--but an odd choice to be making, Sept. 11 or Friday the 13th.

Sounds like a good day to fly... if loads are low enough, higher security might not cause much of a delay. Maybe bigger problems on transcon routes?
But, I don't think the loads will be as low as on 12/31/1999 (Y2K paranoia)... that evening, I flew BOS-JFK-ANC-ICN on a single KE 747 (I think they may have since dropped the BOS-JFK segment from the route).
We got a new crew at each stop. So, about 60 crew total, and one awfully empty 747, in the end got a total of around 20 passengers around the world. I wonder how much money they lost on that? At least they served lots of champagne. And, I got to fly BOS-JFK on "my own" 747

I also return from SIN on the 10th and have to head out to my client site on the 11th, so I'll be flying. I have no choice, really, but also I don't think I'm any more or less safe that day than any other.
