I'll be flying, although it's an RG flight from SSA-GRU-EZE...

I'm flying LAX-ORD
|
Elected not to fly for the week of 9/8-14 only because of the anticipated delays at LGA/JFK due to heightened security for the week. Not that I think the enhanced security is a bad thing, but normal NYC delays are tough enough on a regular basis.

Sad to say if I lived in the USA, I would if possible not leave my home from midnight to midnight on that day. I think risk of any incident on a plane or airport are far lower than large shopping centres, high profile public places, bridge etc, etc. So many nutters, copycats and remnants of Osama's madmen are still out there. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I'm flying on 9/11 for the same reasons as as Catman, and going to take an exam for a city job. I don't have to go, but I'm going to try and make it a point to find a reason (even if I have no reason) to fly every 9/11.

The Travel Industry Association of America, the travel business trade group, offers some sobering statistics: ¶More than 359,000 travel industry jobs lost; 273,000 of them in the first three months after Sept. 11. ¶Domestic travel spending fell $27 billion, to $455 billion, in 2001 and will probably drop another $2 billion this year. ¶Individual business trips dropped to 206.6 million in 2001 from 212.9 million in 2000. A slight recovery, to 209.4 million, is projected for this year, but business trips will not reach 2000 levels until 2003, the travel group said. New Forecasts for Air Travel Growth projections for air travel that were made before last September are out the window, according to a new passenger traffic forecast, "Airports: USA," published by the Boyd Group, an aviation consulting company. By 2005, domestic air passenger traffic will still be 9 percent below 2000 levels, the company said. By comparison, federal aviation forecasts published in 2000 — which still form the basis of planning at some airports — said that passenger traffic would grow to 767.4 million passengers in 2005 from 639.8 million passengers in 2000. http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/10/business/10MEMO.html --- Flying as a Statement of Defiance to Terror http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/10/business/10ROAD.html --- A New and Difficult World for Frequent Fliers http://www.nytimes.com/2002/09/10/business/10YEAR.html [This message has been edited by doc (edited 09-12-2002).] |
An associate of mine just returned from a one day trip to Tallahassee this am (9/11). He mentioned that yesterdays flight LGA-ATL-THL was empty, but returning this am all flights were pretty full. When he asked the Delta agents about it, he was told it was due to the cancellation of so many flights--that those which went were extra busy.

My flight this morning from ORD-DFW was very empty - in fact ORD was very empty and very quiet as well. The captain came on and thanked us for being there, and then the FA passed out donuts that the captain had brought on board for all of the passengers.
I'm glad I flew today. |
Today I flew four flights as part of a two-day 8-segment run on NW. (I picked yesterday and today on purpose.)
Today I flew; BNA-MEM-MKE-DTW-CLE. Glad I picked today too. |
I've yet to take my flights today, and the skies above SNA are open and empty.
Looking at www4.passur.com/lax.html, you can really see just how empty the skies are today. |
Did anyone else get cake and champagne?
On my first flight on 9/11, which was EWR-SFO on United Airlines at 7am, we were served champagne, wine or water in glass flutes and/or wine glasses (coach!!!). After a grand presentation of a beautifully Americana decorated cake (perhaps 14" round, two or three layers), each passenger was offered a piece of cake served on china with a petite metal spoon. A small flag adorned each piece of cake. A large flag was attached to the wall near the galley, and we were encouraged to write our thoughts and sign our names on this flag. It will be taken to Ground Zero. I was crying for a while, and I think they refilled my champagne more than once, so I would fall asleep. Service was the best I'd ever experienced. There were only 30 people in coach, less than 40 on the entire plane and there seemed to be a lot of FAs on this flight. Roses were handed out to many of the women. I met with LarryU and violist for a few minutes in SFO, and they didn't get any cake on their flights. My second flight SFO-EUG home was crowded, hot, and no "love and warmth" service. UA Flight 93 on 9/11/01 was EWR-SFO early morning. I booked a special flight without realizing it until after the trip. Linda |
Flew AMS-LHR-SEA yesterday, we were taxiing around LHR at 1:40pm and were told that at 1:46 LHR would be shutting down for a minutes silence, at 1:45 we stopped, the engines were turned off and we had a minute to reflect on the events of 9/11. I found it a great gesture and was very glad I was part of the flying public on this day we shall never forget.
