What the heck's wrong with kissing FTers?

The kissing topics have been a lot of fun. They're about Flyertalkers, by Flyertalkers. Which is why I'm confused about why the topics were moved to OMNI.

Last time I checked, Flyertalk Community was "the official get together page for the FlyerTalk community." If kissing isn't getting together, I don't know what is.

Apparently, we can talk about trolls and remain strictly on-topic (meaning, I guess, that idle gossip here is okay). We can talk about who we all are (so long as no kissing is involved). We can even run an employment agency which has nothing to do with get-togethers.

But we're banished to the rubbish heap of "OMNI" if we want to kiss? Not since I was a teenager did I have to go behind the bike shed for a quick smooch.

Any moderator want to explain why smooching is off-limits in Community?

wingless Aug 7, 2002 9:22 am

They are just jealous because their lips haven't been kissed lately or maybe the person kissing them isn't worth telling.

So sad. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Go ahead and OMNI this but the kissing will continue.

If you are lucky.

Kiss Kiss http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Randy please don't give in to a couple of FTers. Just by looking at how many people posted to these threads, I believe that most people felt it was an appropriate forum. Of course the KISS band one wasn't but...

Who knows? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/confused.gif

FWIW, many topics/threads concerning FT'ers and/or talking about them, have previously been not only moved, but also closed in the past. Just a few recent examples from FT Community:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001865.html

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001884.html

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001945.html

And even in OMNI, this thread was also closed:

http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...ML/004552.html

Yet, curiously, some, (even within Community), such as this one:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/002001.html

remain open, even now!

As does this BBK initiated thread in OMNI:

http://www.flyertalk.com/travel/fttr...ML/004155.html

FWIW, this has also been brought up for discussion previously, to some degree, at:

The closing of community threads

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/001946.html

My limited understanding was that Randy does not want to censor anyone but that he strongly prefers that we not talk about others.

Yet life has many mysteries, of which this is perhaps one! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

FWIW, I'm curious, as I've posted several times before, if and when, we will actually have a "Moderator" return to the Community forum and for that matter be assigned to the others? Thanks! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

blairvanhorn Aug 7, 2002 9:59 am

Wow, Doc, there sure have been an awful lot of threads about you! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

doc Aug 7, 2002 10:02 am

Far too many, Blair! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

And that's just the tip of the iceberg! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Have a great day all! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I might be wrong as to who did it Matthew but it looks to me like Randy closed about ten threads here himself a short time back. They covered a few pages of recent topics, and he made a remark on one thread when closing it. I make this comment based on simple observation only, and apart from my one public post had no other input re these.

Anyway, whomever closed that bunch of threads down possibly seems to have been passing on a crystal clear message?

There seems to be widely differing opinions on it, but I agreed 100% with Premex's well written summary of this situation: (also on a locked down thread!)

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum95/HTML/002361.html

And I agree with you there are still threads here that possibly are not strictly "usual" in the Community page. I personally would like to see this Forum used for primarily charting dinners, 'DOS' - huge, medium, and small, get-togethers, dinners, airport drinks and such like.

i.e. the threads that one USED to until quite recently find pretty exclusively in Community - mixed when applicable with genuine and important personal matters affecting FT'ers such as illness/serious operations/passing of a loved one etc.

The OMNI Forum is there and heavily patronised for much of the other light hearted content, and it can be just as witty and just as much fun, no matter what Forum it is moved to. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

It's cause we all have cooties, and Randy's trying to keep everyone from getting them.

kokonutz Aug 7, 2002 11:14 am

Hm...wonder how long it'll be before we can KISS this thread goodbye, too http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

FewMiles Aug 7, 2002 11:30 am

And just how is OMNI a rubbish heap? The real trash bin is called "Misposted Threads".

I'll be the one to go out on a limb and say thank goodness these were moved or closed.. the first one was kind of funny for about a minute but when all the other threads regarding kissing opened up it became somewhat ridiculous. I am so glad that they were shut down or moved.. hopefully this will follow those to the "thread closed" grave as well.. BTW, I was not one of those who complained to Randy about this..

I didn't know people had complained.

I didn't know either maybe you should ask the one who started all these threads

Wingless appears to think there were some..

I'll go out on the THANK YOU limb too.

Why is that some FT'ers think they are not subject to the forum descriptions?

What is so hard about initiating a thread in the proper forum?

THANK YOU FT, please keep up the good work.

How does one know that this is what "some" are thinking?

What is so hard to understand about some folks not being so "hard wired" and locked into a kind of digital (go/ NO go) logic?

Can there be any shades of grey?

I hope so! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Ab-so-lute-ly.

Let Omni be the trash-heap. Keep Community for FT events, meetings and the like. Especially since one dumb, meaningless topic spawns five copy-cats overnight.

Abject drivel.

Catman Aug 7, 2002 3:20 pm

Question: are threads celebrating the birthdays of Flyertalkers that are not marked by DOS supposed to go in OMNI or Community????

There are several FLyertalkers with birthdays in August. Just want to make sure I post in the right forum.

But I agree. ENOUGH wtih the kissing posts (I never "kiss and tell") Like so what?

Catman, as Community stands today...either place.

Some time ago Randy made a post saying he agreed with Punki that anything related to FlyerTalkers was welcomed here. And the "Community" descriptor was changed at that time as well.

What my posts refer to is how it used to be (events only), and how I felt it should have stayed that way with all non-travel stuff going to OMNI. Or forums relabled.

Catman I guess Math says about 9% of all FT'ers have their Birthday in August. (or any other month) So this Forum might also get quickly mired down with more many fold more birthday threads than kissing etc ones if that practice becomes too widespread. They can be fun, not arguing that, but (other than maybe 40th, 50th, 60th possibly being OK), OMNI would get my vote too.

Maybe I should have put that a little differently-- get your tail up and wagging again http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif. I should have just cast my "don't let community turn into Omni" vote, without pointing out specific thread(s). And, obviously an occasional light-hearted off-beat thread in Community is more than welcome, but-- IMHO-- over the last couple of days the goof posts were starting to eclipse the community-oriented ones. I say take it to Omni...

Perhaps all of these kissing-related topics (in tandem with the many beer/liquor threads) will spawn even more birthday threads? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Seems like were headed down the road to another Tastes Great! Less Filling!-style debate...

Oh and just to stay on target with the "community forum" I CAN"T WAIT UNTIL THE SEADO!!!!!!!!!! lmao http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Oh and one other thing, my birthday was last month and all I got to do was go to bed early so I could go to work at 445am the next day. Can I get a free beer too? lmao

Ummm one answer big Kahuna: when it becomes so cumbersome that you have to sift (without opening) through numerous kissing threads, birthdays, tributes to someone, etc where they start to outnumber the threads that should be in here, then it is a problem.

However you are right that we don't have to read the threads that we don't want too and I don't.. an example would be that I don't read most airline threads b/c I don't fly them.. that is why they are in their own forum.. so that people can go to or not go to the forum based on topic or in this case airline.. You know the definition of coummunity (& Omni) as well as I do; however the junk that was being posted here was clearly an omni topic(s).. I mean you could almost make any topic into a community thread if your reached far enough.

I have no idea why this thread is still alive..

I guess its my turn to LMAO

First I'd like to start by saying what Charlie Brown would say, "Good Grief."

Next, if Randy closed these kissing threads...Hint, Hint.

I wish you could all see my face so you could actually read what I'm really saying. But since I'm a troublemaker (originally from Brooklyn), I'll let you all figure it out.

On a side note, I seem to recall the same posters showing up everywhere. Including that guy from the Wall St. Journal. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

And this is what confused me. Under this description, the kissing threads (silly as they were) seemed to be on-topic. I had assumed (wrongly, I guess) that if it had to do with Flyertalkers, it belonged here.

Now I know better.

How about a new board called the "Playpen?" (Sorry, that should probably go on the suggestions board.)

eMailman Aug 8, 2002 7:20 am

I would prefer that discussion was moderated consistently. Some months ago when a topic of which airline has the cutest FAs was locked, while the one asking on where the gay bars in FRA could be found was left open, I find the logic hard to follow. Both topics had just as much relevance to a FFP.....
