A couple of suggestions... (not aimed at anyone in particular and probably not relevant to THIS particular thread).

- I think we should get a master list going of places that people WANT to go for dos... and then maybe try to start looking out into the future. I know everyone wants to show off their hometowns and as well, there seem to be some events (SEA, PDX, LGB) that are becoming regular recurring dos - also good.

- Some people plan their vacations out in advance... some people do spur of the moment. Either way, I think getting a master calendar together (in a form that people will actually USE) would be great for both.

- I think that before hosting a do, potential hosts should attend one or two first. You'll get a better idea of the personalities, the range of interests, and the degree of planning involved.

- I would also tend to agree that summer is looking just a WEE bit jammed right now. Of course, having something just about every weekend increases the likelihood that someone will be able to attend a do somewhere. It also may end up spreading us all too thin, though, so I miss out on seeing people because no one goes to the same ones and over all attendance is lowered for all the hosts.

Great Idea!!!

I'll start with my favorite domestic-North American locations:

KEY WEST; LOS ANGELES; MONTREAL/QUEBEC CITY

fyi, I didn't count the LBG one as LAX as it appears to be a quick dinner or drinks and thats it.. not really a doo, at least that was my interpretation of it

I would have to disagree with this statement.
Some people are natural organizers ( not me). For Example the SAN do in July 2001 had

PROGRAMS
a tour of the control tower
guide dog demonstrations
lectures from airport personnel
dinner Fri nite
dinner Sat nite
drinks and lunch at the airport to see the 777
arranged transportation for those without cars
games
gifts
nametags
banners to welcome us

All set up by a person SanDiego1K who had NEVER attended a DO. Well Captain Mike was involved too

I think all of us who were there agree that this was a FANTASTIC DO. Should it not have happened because the organizer had not attended one before?

Just my 2 American cents

Let me amend my statement to say ATTEND or SEEK ADVICE of those who have... my understanding is that they did the latter. And I'm not saying that a successful do can't be pulled off otherwise - I'm thinking less of the organizational abilities and more of the "understanding the audience".

I also planned a do before attending one (well almost..I ended up in Tucson weeks before SEADo last year, but it was planned for the most part already)

I DO recommend seeking advice from Previous do-planners. Or at least venting on them when you start to get frustrated... (thanks Carol ) they know where you're comin from!

I'd love to do a MSP "do". I lived there a LONG time and kinda like the place, except from October 22 - April 28th. (winter, that is; the end date based on this years 6" snowstorm on 4/27). I still have many of my people there.

I'd love to come home to MN for a do!

Unfortuantly, I'm nearly fully booked for the summer with work and personal trips already.

But I do have some suggestions:

Something other than MOA, or at least not a tour of it--there's so much more to see and do in MN when the weather is good.

For our family reunion last year, my family had a catered dinner one of those big old-fashioned paddleboats departing from St. Paul and cruising a few miles down the Miss. Unfortunately, I couldn't go, but I heard that it was a blast and not overpriced.

A tour of NW's NATCO (Northwest's pilot training facility--they train pilots from airlines all over the world.) I don't know if NW would be willing to do it, but it's worth a shot. I went there a couple of times in high school and it was very cool--I thought so mostly because I got to fly a 744 sim with an instructor. NW even gave us dinner I hope they'd be willing to do the same for dedicated FTers --it might even win 'em some more business.

Edited to add...Doesn't James Page have tourable brewery in St. Paul?

I'd love to visit with my friend Hobson. But probably not this summer in MSP.

Omni to jan_az: You left out the Catman DO 3 and the Freddies, where a certain flyertalker coordinated the now (in)famous dhammer53 reality Tour of Brooklyn.

So, would that be 3 Canadian cents? There's lots of Canadian change floating around MSP.

I second the idea of touring NW... I did this twice in school, and it was pretty neat. I remember they set up a panel with a Res agent, someone from operations, a flight attendant, etc.-- kind of a career day type thing. Of course the FT audience would be different.... but we can all play nice, right?!?!

Another thought on dinner/food: how about Famous Daves?? Close to downtown and the lakes, not far from the airport/MOA, and lots of activity in the evening there in Uptown.

Or we could go to that Sonny's Ice Cream factory on Lyndale.... for the life of me I never knew it existed until I saw the address in the NWA magazine one time.
