Safe but heartbroken in Tucson...
|
An interesting tale...
Arrived in ORD Monday. Spent the day sight-seeing with a friend. Tuesday AM. Boarded plane, everything normal (or so I thought). We taxi for takeoff, then return to terminal. We are told airport is closing and to "get away from ORD as fast as you can". I have to be in STL for a customer installation, so I high-tail it to Hertz. Why Hertz? Because I have to pick up my priceline rental in STL from Hertz. By the time I get my car, the line at Hertz is over 100 people deep. I shout out, "Anybody need a lift to STL?" Someone volunteers. He lives in Houston and figures he's gonna end up driving, so we're heading in the right direction. We get our car and spend the next 5 1/5 hours talking about it. Absolutely surreal. We had seen NO footage at this point. We arrive in STL - the airport is a ghost town. I go pick up my car. There are NO cars for him to rent, so he re-rents the car we drove from ORD. I started having concerns on how I was getting home. I called Amtrak - no dice. I thought about greyhound, but realized that there was a big risk with so many connections on buses. So now I'm driving. I am currently sitting in a Hampton Inn in Troy, OH. I wake up in 5 hours to drive home to my family. Not the greatest solution, but a working one. I hope things work out no worse for others. ------------------ "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own." |

I just arrived home on Friday after driving back from Columbus, OH. My flights on AA got Me to Columbus Monday night, so I had a rental car. Family and I made a decision and I started driving home Tuesday about noon.
My prayers and thoughts go out to the families who lost loved ones, the other victims and our country. Safe travels |
Here and sad....3 friends still unaccounted for in WTC, 1 from Cantor-Fitzgerald, 1 who worked in Ct. & had driven in for a meeting...and 1 who was near the floor where the first plane hit

Also, if Greyhound oversells capacity on a schedule, additional sections are generally added to that schedule whenever needed. How did I know that? ;-) Had this been in the early part of the 90's, when Greyhound tried to operate a reservation-based, airline-style hub-and-spoke system, then you would have had multiple connections, and therefore, multiple problems. I'm glad you're safe, Jon. Studley |
Safe in Park City, Utah. Last week was a non travel week for me. I guess I was fortunate to have not been stranded somewhere as so many have been.
I love NYC. It is my favorite city on earth. If New Yorkers were not the strongest folks on earth already, their coming together will surely make them the strongest on earth...and inspire everyone to stand with them and to be better people. They have the support of our nation, our people, and the world. God Bless the people of NYC..and God Bless America..in closing I am reminded of the words uttered by the Japanese Emperor immediately after bombing Pearl Harbor. : " I fear we have awakened a sleeping giant..one with great resolve"..clearly in only a few days..this resolve is alive in the spirits of especially the people of NYC. They do not stand alone because this resolve in the soul of every American. |
made it! flew down the east coast Tuesday morning for a mileage run... (flew over Manhattan at 8:20am) and was stuck in Charlotte for a couple days, but that pales in comparison to so many families who've seen tragedy. My heart goes out to all of them

I was safe in mid-town Manhattan, but saw the horrific events unfold from a taxi on my way to my office in the World Financial Center.
If it hadn't taken me a (then) frustrating 15 minutes to hail a taxi that morning, I might have been right in the middle of it all. ------------------ - Bob |
Safe in SF.
To all those who may have known Judy Larocque (including her family, friends and colleagues) - a pax (Non-FTer) aboard AA#11: Judy was one of the most amazing people I have ever worked with. All of us who knew her have thought about her light these past days. My thoughts and hopes are with her family and friends. We will never forget what happened. <G> |
Safe, but horrified, saddened and concerned, here in Sydney Australia.
Today is our national day of sorrow. And I jsut wanted to let everyone know that although we are on the other side fo the world, we share in your pain. We also lost a number of Aussies. But more than that, we all lost fellow human beings Phoebe |
I have the memory of seeing the Manhattan skyline and WTC towers from the EWR airport last July on my way to FRA. I have been grounded the last month being too busy with a new teaching job. Relocated this summer from Eureka to the fog of Monterey Bay. Saddened by the events and trying to impress on my 10 year old students the tragedy and significance of these days.

(Sorry.. didn't see this thread earlier)
We're OK here. I live 4 blocks away and work 3 blocks away from the WTC. I was home getting ready to leave when I heard about the first crash. Later, i witnessed the 2nd crash from the balcony and then was trapped in my apartment as the 2 buildings collapsed, sending ash everywhere. (fortunately, we were able to close the windows in time). We later fled via the Brooklyn Bridge and have been homeless ever since. Right now, our building is still out of water, gas, and electricity, but we've heard we may be able to get back by Tuesday or Wednesday (Wall St. has higher priority). Although i didn't presonally know anyone that perished in the WTC, this experience has been very personal. Our neighborhood has been turned into a war zone, and words can't express the sorrow for all the victims of this tragedy. |
