Are we talking wine pairings for Brunei, Burkina Faso, or Burundi? In any case it is a challenge, but I can think of nobody more able than monitor and dhammer53

For Sat 10/11 I might be able to drag along my usual +1. That guy just can't get a date on Saturday nights.

When yesterday I said weekend after next, I meant not the 10-11 weekend which was next, but the 17-18-19 weekend which I perceived as the weekend after next.

I guess I should have been a bit more precise with my language. :o

If that [the 17th-19th] the case, and if it can be scheduled then, I may be able to join. I'm coming up to NYC for an event, but if I'm there and the schedules don't conflict, I'm in!

Good news and bad news.

The bad news is that the restaurant in Harlem was nowhere to be found, and I'm going to have to pull the plug on hopes of a Burkinese meal tonight.

The good news is I managed to get in touch with the Burkinese woman who operated the catering business, and she has agreed to prepare us a meal of 2-3 dishes next Saturday (October 11).

dhammer53, I'll get you a menu soon so you can think about the wine pairings :)

For those speculating about the date.... he did say Saturday, October 11 (see above).

Is it still happening?

thewayofthefuture Oct 9, 2014 5:20 pm

Hi all, yes dinner this Saturday (Oct 11) is still on. I'm in transit now and will be back with more details tomorrow. It sounds like we will have quite a crowd, and we may even be joined by one or both of the Burkina Faso natives with whom I've coordinated this meal :)

I'm also planning on skipping ahead to Cambodia next Friday night, October 17, to accommodate a few visitors. Details on that tomorrow as well.

As promised, updates:

Burkina Faso is tomorrow night (October 11) at my apartment on the Upper East Side. This will be more of an informal gathering than a sit-down dinner, if for no other reason than I have yet to purchase a dining table for this apartment :). I think I've given the address to everyone on the attendee list below, but if anyone else is interested in coming, please drop me a PM. Come over anytime beginning ~7:30.

I asked for enough food for 8-10 people, so it's first come, first served. We will have 3 courses available (main, side, dessert), but I don't exactly know what they will be.

Cambodia will be next Friday, October 17 at Cafe Cambodge at 7pm. This is right across the intersection from Edi and the Wolf, the site of our Austrian meal last November. I have a reservation for 8 people, with 5 seats currently claimed and 3 maybes. If demand is higher, I'll try to increase the reservation.

Assuming UA delivers my delayed luggage, I might be able to offer some Alsatian wine. ;)

Does anyone know if this place is licensed or is it BYOB?

Pretty sure they have a license but I'll be downtown later & will stop by to confirm and ask about corkage.

Cambodian food, stumbling distance from our apartment, and excellent company--sounds like a great evening but the in-laws are in town so we are booked. One of these days....

thewayofthefuture Oct 12, 2014 7:34 pm

Thanks to everyone who came out for Burkinabe food last night! This was our largest crowd (14) to date :) Pics (along with a few from Brazil and Bulgaria) coming soon..

I went by Cafe Cambodge this afternoon - the place is fairly small, but the setup is such that a fairly large group could be seated together without much trouble. So, if you would like to come, please confirm by Tuesday so I can finalize the headcount.

Also, they do have a full bar, but the person I spoke with said they do not offer corkage but seemed unsure. I'll ask again when I call back to confirm the reservation

The egg meatball looking item was certainly unusual. :p I did enjoy the other items served. I even enjoyed the dessert. Interesting taste, and an unusual taste for this sweet expert. :D

Flyertalk dinners are always about good company, miles and points discussion, and the food. Thanks for hosting. ^
