When do my Thank You points expire?

It depends.

It's important to understand that if you have multiple Citi cards ("sponsor accounts") generating points into a single TY account, those pooled points may have different expiration dates based upon the rules of the corresponding sponsor account. Points from some sponsor accounts never expire as long as the sponsor account is open, while others have an expiration date based on the date of earning. (For a comprehensive list of expiration rules, see the TYP T&C.)

To complicate matters further, points-earning activity from a sponsor account will often extend the validity of older points from that same sponsor account.

What happens when I cancel a credit card from which I have earned TY points?

Points previously earned from that sponsor account will expire after 60 days.

What happens when I downgrade a Prestige card or Premier card from which I've earned TY points?

A product change from one ThankYou earning card to another ThankYou earning card should keep the points from expiring.

What are the rules for sharing points from my account to another TY account?

If you share points with (that is, make an internal TY transfer to) another TY account, those points will expire 90 days after the transfer. Note that
  • this is true regardless of whether you share to another TY user or to another TY account you hold (if you have multiple TY accounts);
  • you may not share points that are expiring in less than 90 days; and
  • you may not share more than 100K points (or receive more than 100K shared TY points) in any calendar year.

For details, see ThankYou Point Sharing capped at 100,000 points per calendar year

When I redeem points (for travel, gift cards, etc.), which ones does Citi use up first?

Citi will use the points with the soonest expiration date, which may or may not be points from a canceled sponsor account.

How can I see my expiring points?

Follow these steps:
  1. Log into your Thank You account (either directly or via citicards.com)
  2. From the My Account menu (top right of screen), select either "My Account Overview" or "My Points Summary"
  3. Look for a statement near the top of the screen such as "You do not have any points expiring within the next 60 days or less"
  4. Select "View all expiring points"
  5. Alternate: If logged in, you should be able to see the list at:https://www.thankyou.com/accountStatementExpiry.jspx
Note: The totals displayed will not include points expiring within 60 days as a result of closing a sponsor account. SOURCE

Why do I see a warning that points expire in 7 days after converting from Citi Preferred to Citi Rewards+?

Citi acknowledges this message can appear in error after converting from one ThankYou credit card to another type of ThankYou credit card. If your points actually expired they will adjust the point balance upon request. In at least one case, the expiration never occurred despite the message.

If you converted a ThankYou credit card to a non-ThankYou credit card, that may be a different issue, and it's possible points really will expire by the stated deadline.
The info about 24-month clocks vs product changes came from these web pages:

Hi, I was responding to RobertF14's message about the 7-day expiration that appears after downgrading a Preferred card to Rewards+. The message appeared 28 days ago but the expiration didn't occur. Citi acknowledges this message is a mistake and will adjust points if it happens.

Your case is different since your points expired due to an account closure, and I think you're saying Citi will not recognize the expiration date you saw. I guess I would have reopened the account to fix this. If you really don't get anywhere, I once had a credit card issue resolved by writing a polite letter to the OCC who then contacted the bank.

Hi guys. Unhappy w the prestige devaluation so i went ahead and applied for TY premier so i can retain the 1.25c airfare redemption. I have six or seven months left before my prestige renews. in the mean time i have a few 4n stays that i will need this card still active. Eventually i plan to downgrade the Prestige to DoubleCash. (I also have ATTAM). Will the product change to DoubleCash trigger anything funny for my TYP or am i good to go? Thank you.

After many calls, downgrading the Prestige to another ThankYou card: Premier, Preferred or Rewards+ all results in the card number changing. There doesn't seem to be any way to downgrade the Prestige and not reset the 24 month clock.

The Premier doesn't have that issue, you can downgrade to the Preferred or Rewards+ and the card number shouldn't change.

Is that what Citi told you -or- are you simply assuming that a new card number means that the Prestige account would be "closed" for bonus eligibility purposes? New account numbers are assigned to existing accounts for various reasons that do not reset the bonus clock.

Going off the conventional wisdom that getting a new card number from a conversion/product change will reset the 24 month bonus eligibility. I couldn't find a consensus of data points anywhere that a Prestige downgrade does not reset the bonus clock, so I think it's safe to assume it does reset it.

After you downgrade, how much time do Citi give you to reconsider your decision? Thanks!

Question PC another TYP card to DoubleCash and keep TYP points alive?

Now that DoubleCash earns TYP points, we need datapoints as to whether converting from another TYP card to DoubleCash (since the DoubleCash started earning TYP points) keeps the TYP points from that previous card alive "forever", as converting to Preferred/Rewards+/Access* did/does.

(*I converted an ancient AT&T Universal Card to AT&T Access earlier this year, and my points stayed alive, though because of AT&T Universal Card origin, they'll expire in a few years.)

Thanks.

Does Double Cash earn ThankYou points directly -or- can DC rewards be converted to TYP as needed? This may change the way Citi's system sees activity.

I have both Citi Prestige and Premier, and am planning to cancel the Premier, I know my TYP from Premier will expire in 60 days after I cancel the card - if I transfer to TACA Lifemiles or Singapore Krisflyer - are my points safe there? Will they have the same expiry rules as the airline FF program?

The card earns cash back. A new option is to convert to TYP. Cheers.

Cancelling my Prestige card... how can I keep the points?

Getting rid of my citi prestige card for an Amex Gold card.

Getting rid of travel insurance (plus my Amex Plat now has it) plus totally destroying the 4th night benefit by requiring me to use thankyou.com is why I'm doing it. Sometimes the "4th night free" is actually more expensive than booking four nights directly with the hotel.

Anyways, I have about 200k points and I'd like to keep them. Is there a free card I can sign up for that will let me keep the points and transfer them to airlines?

Thanks.

I am looking at canceling my Premier card for the same reason. I believe a downgrade to a Citi Rewards+ card allows us to keep the existing points from expiring but I am not 100% sure on that. If some could chime in to confirm this and maybe point out what the best downgrade options are, TIA!

First of all, singing up for a different card but cancelling your Prestige won't save your points (past 60 days). You would have to downgrade your current Prestige card to another TYP card to keep your 200k points alive beyond 60 days. CIti keeps track of which card you earned points with, and if that card is totally cancelled, your points expire 60 days later, no matter what other Citi cards you have.

To keep the points and transfer them to airlines (beyond just JetBlue), you would have to downgrade the Prestige to the $95 AF Premier card.

While you can keep your points around by downgrading the Prestige to the no-AF Rewards+ card, that card doesn't allow you to transfer to any airlines (except I think JetBlue). However, if you do that, and then later apply for the Premier card, at that point you will be able to transfer to other airlines.

Like most folks here I will be getting rid of the Citi Prestige card in Jan, a couple of questions:

1. I have a Citi Priority Bank Account which earns TY points, by having that card does that mean my current points will not expire in 60 days?
2. Should I downgrade my card or should I open a new Citi Premier TY card, to take advantage of the bonus? My current card is 3 years old.

No. There are two, and only two, ways to prevent ThankYou points from expiring if you close the Prestige card which earned them:

1. Redeem them
2. Downgrade Prestige to Premier or Rewards+.

Opening or holding other cards, bank accounts, etc has NO effect.
