Bargain hotel in Shanghai
Dear friends,
I generally post in the "flights" section, but my recent trip to Shanghai was very interesting in the lodging point of view.
Being French, I like to use the Accor chain (predictable and not expensive).
I reserved a room at the Ibis hotel Pudong (300 Fandiang Lu).
The price was a bargain : 348 a night (week) 288 a night (we).
Rooms were Ibis standard (clean, a bit small, good qsize bed, TV, free broadband, bathroom) and eco-friendly.
Reservation was made thru the french www.accorhotels.com service, which is very efficient.
People at the hotel were not fully fluent (exception of managers) but enough for hotel purposes and much more pleasant than usualy in China.
The location is very good : a bit far from subway (1.5 kilometer) but taxis aplenty (ride to financial district Pudong : 10 minutes and 11 yuan, about USD 1.5 !). Ride from airport and to airport : direct, 45 min, 100 yuan.
For the abovementionned reasons, I recommand this hotel for its fully westerner style (once in the bedroom you shoud be in any Ibis hotel somewhere in Europe), its price and location.

There's a "Jinjiang" Sofitel pretty close to Century Park. My company put me up there once because we had a conference at the Pudong Shangri-La and it was cheap. Unfortunately, I wasn't particularly impressed with the hotel and I would have gladly traded away some of the amenities for a more convenient location; unless you're working long hours in Lujiazui or further out, there's really no reason not to stay east of the river (IMO).

-stay in Puxi (west) unless you're planning on spending a lot of time in Pudong (east)
-being marginally closer to the airport does not tip the scales in favor of the latter IMO

I now realize that I confused myself (and therefore everybody else) with my double negative. I should have just said:
-stay in Puxi (west) unless you're planning on spending a lot of time in Pudong (east)
-being marginally closer to the airport does not tip the scales in favor of the latter IMO

Same thing about the airport : if you dont drive at peak hours, the gain is marginal, if you drive at peak hours, it is important.
To go to Puxi, I took every time a taxi to the nearest subway station (century park or something else, 11 RMB) then the subway which is fast and very convenient (15 minutes to station, 8 minutes to Nanjing road...).
Finally, it depends of what your are looking for : "Global" China (Pudong), "Chinese" China (Puxi).
Last point : Puxi is, at the present time, saturated by a lot of public works (on the Bund, for instance) until I believe the Expo.
