Back in the $50/single entry days, I had the airlines say..OK I give up ,which
China visa is current? Then they said, you got so many visas, why don't you just move there. Well I can't..they won't allow that for laowais.

Now, with multi-entry common they've probably gotten used to old visas that aren't marked off and it hasn't been an issue.

Just wanted to update this to say that I just renewed my L visa at the Chicago consulate and was given 1-year, multiple entries, and 90(!) days with no questions asked.
I had only ever gotten 60 days in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised.

I am getting my visas back on Monday and will let you all know what they gave. I ended up requesting 12 month multi-entry and used mychinavisa.com/Houston Consulate as the agent.

He is, which is the only (official) way to get 2-year L. I was rejected for 2-year F in spite of really slick letter when I applied in Jan. Instead, they gave me 1-year F with 120 days/stay. I have two clients in tow and they got the exact same visa (used same letter) even though this is their first trip to China.

Last week picked up my 1 year, multi-entry, 90 days per from the NY Consulate. So much easier than dealing with the China embassies/consulates in SE Asia, where the best I could hope for was a 6 month 2 entry.

The 2 Year visa is pretty easy to get if you fall into any of those categories. My wife is a Chinese National and I received my second 2 Year visa back in December - I just had to submit a copy of my wife's Chinese passport bio pages and a copy of our marriage certificate along with the visa application and I received a 2 year visa without any problems.

Just get the L visa for tourism--you didn't describe any reason that you'd need an F for. Keep it simple. You won't need a letter for an L visa. I can't figure out why your friend working in China has any bearing on your visa application. If you will be travelling inside China for longer than 30 day standard visa duration, then ask for 60 day duration on the application form and put down a longer list of cities (need not match your real travel plans). Because they are now all same price for US citizens, you should check the box for multiple entry, 12 months validity.
