NRT to PEK Airfare?

NRT to PEK Airfare?
I'm trying to book tickets from NRT-PEK, but all of the prices I'm seeing are through the roof. Cathay Pacific (changing in HKG) and ANA (non-stop) are both over USD$1,500 round trip!
What's going on? Why is Beijing so expensive? I just booked NRT-HKG on CX, and that was only about $500! Is there a high tax flying into China from Japan?

I always found this route extremely expensive. Pretty cheap if you can use mileage, though; at least on AA it was a couple of years ago. I used to pay 20k miles (or was it 25?) for economy.

-nw, 20k in y, 30k in j and you can do one leg in each for 25k
-ua/us, 20/30/40 in y/j/f on nh or oz (not a lot of "f" out there though)
-aa, 20/30/40 in y/j/f on jl (no "f" on jl regional flights)
-dl/co, 25/30/60 in y/j/f on nw or ke
i redeem in y when flying *a because i get lounge access anyway and j isn't all that special, but i usually try for j on nw (MUCH better than y)
