Nothing beats SZX simply because they decided to put 2 toilets into bathrooms meant to serve tens of thousands of people an hour. Thankfully they arent light on stores featuring Chinese fashion brands. All the Ordos sweaters and Youngor Jackets you want, but nowhere to take a dump when you need it.

Still in the NA carriers offering service to CAN/SZX waiting room.

CZ monopoly means YYZ-CAN direct is double the price of YYZ-HKG direct. Alternatively, they can just drop the PCR requirements so entering through HKG is hassle-free and I'll be happy too.

FedEx aside, since that never really happened when China wasn't such a PITA to enter/exit, what makes you think that now should be the time?

Quoting myself to apologize to SZX. I flew through there for the first time since before the pandemic. The new satellite terminal is now ahead of Shanghai Hongqiao as my favorite airport terminal in China. The original building still stinks but the satellite terminal is fantastic.

- 3X per week flight PVG - MLE (Maldives)
- 3X per week PVG - Dubai
- 2X per week PVG - Phnom Penh
- Daily flight PVG - Manila (time sucks though)
- Daily flight PVG - SIN (not sure if it's daily or 5X / week, source is confusing)

Notably, no additions to US flights yet, but I see this as a good sign.

Also, source mentions revival of catering capabilities in New York, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney, Melbourne, Frankfurt, Rome, Budapest, Dubai so food is set to improve.

No Moscow?. Pre covid, in northern summer the flights were twice a day, 11x PVG and 3x Xian. Los Angeles, San Francisco are also two big cities missing.

My gut tells me that routes with demand are higher up in their pecking order.

The terminal is beautiful. But still requires long walk to subway and long subway to baggage claim at the old terminal.

Shenzhen's 2014 terminal number of gates plus the new satellite terminal number of gates together are about the same as the number of gates in ATL T and A and B concourses. Which gives ATL all the C and D and E and F gates as above and beyond Shenzhen's whole airport. True, ATL is not very beautiful. But there are plenty of toilets and Skyclubs and you can walk between all concourses in case of a subway failure.

I flew out of SZX the first day the new terminal opened. 3 weeks later, my second flight out, I had to take a bus to my airplane parked next to the old terminal, 7 (?) km away.

(also on Bloomberg, but this link isn't behind a paywall)

"United Airlines Holdings Inc. has delayed plans to add extra US-China flights by at least six months, according to a person with knowledge of the matter, as the two nations remain deadlocked over lifting Covid flight caps. The increase in flights was originally slated to start late next month, but the move was postponed over the weekend, said the person, who isnt authorized to speak because the matter is private. The airline has started to inform affected passengers, they added."

Cached Bloomberg article: https://archive.is/KwGI2

The article doesn't specify the reason for the breakdown in talks, but rumors elsewhere suggest it's a combination of (1) unhappiness from both sides about pre-departure testing requirements, and (2) US unhappiness about Chinese carriers being able to overfly Russia.

I've heard the more pressing standoff has boiled down to disagreements over how to reapply the bilateral.

For North America, MU's will remain the same -- PVG-JFK flights only, twice a week, and a couple of Toronto flights I think.

So is Philippine Airlines. They're coming up as the cheapest business class option. But the flight times suck, at 32 hours one way.

I'm looking at June flights PVG-LAX round trip, and Philippines is at $3000. Next is BR at more than double that through TPE.

I may be mistaken ( or outdated info), but I thought PAL was the only legacy airline that did NOT offer lie-flat
business class seats.
