so, assuming a family gets in and assuming their visa is current. Does anyone know of the actual cost of the 14 day quarantine? I've hear everywhere from ¥100-600/person? couples needing to separate etc. I've got people looking to go back that are families with children (I would assume they won't split up a family?).
My real question is do we know of a source besides here-say that gives these actual costs? 1) Family will be split up, only one adult per room. Meaning husband and wife will each be in their own room. Children can stay with either parent of the parent's choosing. By the way hotels are randomly assigned so don't ask about picking your own hotel with extra cash or other reasons. 2) Price range depends on the hotel you're sent to, but generally within $300-$600. Food charge is extra per person per room. Again actual price depends on the hotel, but expect anywhere between $100 - $150 RMB per person per day. All 14 days are expected to be paid up front, including food. Should you be release early (see below for circumstances), they will refund you the price differences later. NOTE: it is best to have Alipay or WeChat Pay. You may pay by credit card but beware not all hotels accept foreign cards, and they really really hate processing credit cards and will keep asking you to pay by other means (seen it happened at the check-in table). 3) If you have residence in Shanghai, and you have younger children (other reasons are Seniors, Pregnant, Disabled), you can apply for "humanitarian considerations" - that means if the airport COVID test returns negative, you *may* be granted early release from the hotel and return home for quarantine (not free roaming, you are expected to quarantine yourself in your own home). Forms will be provided for you to fill out once you've checked-in (so don't ask the people at the airport for early release applications or approvals, they don't know nor will they care to help you). Be aware the Community Management Office of your residence must also approved this. Just to let you know the decision isn't the head doctor stationed at your hotel alone. 4) Or, if you don't qualify for "humanitarian considerations", but have residence in Shanghai, you can apply for "7+7", 7 days in the hotel and 7 days at home quarantine. 5) Finally, worst case, you need to stay at the hotel for 14 days Also, to let you know, depending on the time you're flying into Pudong, the process of deplane to getting checked-in can be many many hours. If you have young children may be a good idea to have some food/drinks in your carry-on. My family and I came in at 7 PM and the airport was deserted, but from deplaning, to first-check-point, to second-point COVID test, to custom and luggage, to registration with local police for hotel assignment, finally to arrival at the assigned hotel and checked-in, it still took us a good 2-3 hours total. That's when the airport was practically empty with only our flight as arrival! Reading some stories on the web I have read some people have arrived at 1 PM and didn't get to rest in their room until 11 PM! NOTE: not all hotels accept food delivery (mine doesn't). They only accept delivery packages (so you can buy packaged food items like instant noodles, snacks, packaged milk, but forget about ordering from your favorite restaurants everyday). You may be lucky to get one that does, but just be aware some don't. Also, the hotels will give you some necessities and items on your initial checked-in, but they won't give you more (at least mine doesn't) unless you buy it from them, and they only accept WeChat Pay for payment. Just be aware while some hotels may be very accepting, others, like mine, are not. Good luck, let me know if you have any other questions. |

This is different from the information I'm seeing from the government (in Chinese): ????????????????????????14????_????_?????
Basically says those entering mainland China from Macau don't need to quarantine for 14 days anymore if: 1) no travel overseas within last 14 days 2) have negative PCR test within 7 days 3) have the proper documents to enter China This is the same message that pops up when you try to buy a ticket to / from Macau. Before I attempt it I just wanted to see if anyone has actually tried it. So based on that it looks like if you have been in Mainland China for the last 14 days, and not been to the city of Qingdao, you may simply supply a negative COVID19 test 7 days from your departure flight time and you won't need to quarantine. Let me specifically answer your 1,2,3 1) If you have traveled to Qingdao, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, you will be quarantine for 14 days. 2) If you have traveled to Hong Kong, then the quarantine test needs to be within 24 hours (and quarantine for 14 days, ouch!) 3) Only if you're using Mainland Chinese, Hong Konger, or Taiwanese documentations. All foreigners (with few exceptions) are still banned from Macau. |

That's nuts. I don't think there's a single lab in the US that can even get PCR results out in 2 days consistently, much less antibody results.

Agreed. The way I read this is that, practically, it's not realistic to travel to China directly from the US. The requirement does not apply to other countries, so it means spending a couple of weeks somewhere else before traveling to China.

A friend travelling from UK to China this weekend had the notification of the new policy in the international version of the China Health Code app. It wasn't immediately obvious whether it applied to the UK or not.

This will make it virtually impossible for most Chinese citizens in US to return to China. While around the metro area of big cities in the US that can have 24/48-hour turnarounds, the problem is reservations are needed months ahead, or, if you're lucky enough to get one, they will tell you because of the transport uncertainty and lab constrain (they send them off to a lab by express services), your result is not guaranteed within that time period. If you live in suburban or lesser populated cities, unless your city has a COVID-lab, forget it, they need to send your sample to a lab far away and you'll be lucky to get 72-hour services.
Usually 72-hours is the "norm", by making it 48-hours, yes, it's a big hand signal that we don't want you back. So much for the promotion that "No matter where you are, the Chinese Government will always be there to help you" |
Isn't it obvious by now that the message to the overseas Chinese citizens from China is: Don't come home.

Definitely applies to the UK - although at present the relevant text on the Chinese UK Embassy web-site is only in Chinese. Only applies from Nov 7th onwards for the UK so your friend is still good to go under the old requirements.
