Pax on 858 certainly are affected. We’re locked in our apartments with no food delivery. How are we supposed to escape the lockdown, evade the police for 50km whilst we walk to Pudong airport as there is no transport?

i would like to hear that from moondog myself, or anyone else on the ground, because those people I know in Shanghai are certainly Pissed about the situation, but not going hungry. At least not yet. If they can’t find a solution (aka, living with covid) then it might become darker quite soon, but we aren’t yet where people are literally starving to death in Holodomir-style, as you claim it.

I think you're arguing about semantics here. People aren't literally starving to death (yet) since it takes a couple of weeks without food to literally starve to death. But one of my friends in SH says that some of her friends are starting to run out of food. That's not "starving" in a literal sense but this word is often used to express "going hungry". When you haven't eaten all day and you say "I'm starving", you aren't even close to starving to death. But an entire global city of people should not ever be going hungry because of a virus unless it's smallpox or something about as deadly.

Apparently there is a way. Someone forwarded a pdf to the WeChat group regarding the details. Basically you need to get approval from your neighbourhood authorities, then book a transfer that takes you to the hospital for the Covid test and finally to the airport.

I agree. Unless there are PRC nationals returning home to China, no reasons for American to come to China and subject to the stubborn zero tolerence policy. State Department just issued travel alerts to China and HK.

They are both PRC citizens on short term visits to the US. Their visas carry expiration duration of six months.

Yeah, I wouldn't ever willingly walk into a situation where social order is breaking down. I mean, it's one thing if it happens while I am in a certain place, but willingly going in after it happens is another matter.

People are just generally pissed. And then, like in all areas, you have a lot of people who become officers who should never become officers, who are just on a power trip. You're going to barge into people's homes when they're pissed off, short on food, and likely have a short fuse? It's not a reason to push someone off a balcony but you couldn't pay me to do that job right now. Then again, I suspect (just wildly guessing) that this person who was pushed probably was on a power trip similar to the officer in the first video, and the people in that last video. If you are going to try barging into people's homes, you'd better have MAJOR de-escalation training or you are putting your life at risk. And even then, it's probably best to just not do it. Just put a sensor on the door and make sure they don't leave.

Other story I've heard is that it was a suicide. Either way, people are now literally dying because of this stupidity.

A 4-day doubling time means something like half a million cases/day by the end of the month--not that the 20k has anything to do with reality, they're swamped on testing.

Data point on the ground: SIL (Pudong area) got a food package today, vegetable oil/shelf-stable milk/one package of noodles. I would eyeball it (the photograph isn't good enough to read the weight) as a day's calories for the household, but as most of the calories are in the oil that's not going to work too well short of simply drinking it. This is the first package they have received since they were locked down on the 1st. The other SIL (in the city itself) that we are in frequent contact with I believe has likewise received only one package so far.
