As a result of an unanticipated mandate from the Shanghai Government, we had to cancel your reservation XXXXXX for flight 857 from San Francisco to Shanghai on 4/15/2022.

Please contact United at 1-877-826-0254 to review rebooking options or to request a refund. For more information on our cancellation and refund policies, go to united.com/refund. We are sorry for this inconvenience and appreciate your understanding and cooperation during the process.

If you have a comment or complaint about your travel disruption, we suggest raising it with the Chinese government in the U.S. or its consulate office.

So, UA is telling us to complain to the Chinese government LOL

If they reduced the capacity from 75% to 40%, what is the deciding factor on who gets bumped?

Not sure what you're trying to say.

The case which kb1992 has brought forward is about pax having their flights cancelled because the PRC reduced allowed occupancy rate on flights TO China.

Those flights can still leave with normal occupancy when departing FROM China, unless I'm mistaken. So pax booked on flights departing FROM China are not affected.

Same aircraft. Inbound to China (PRC) maximum capacity is cut, Outbound from China (PRC), it's not.

Pax on 858 certainly are affected. We’re locked in our apartments with no food delivery. How are we supposed to escape the lockdown, evade the police for 50km whilst we walk to Pudong airport as there is no transport?

it’s absolutely insane what they are doing. Willing to see people starve to death in their showcase city in order to try and stamp out omicron. Nuts, completely bonkers!

While I think you're exaggerating - no one is starving to death (at least yet) - I agree that trying to fight Omicron is utterly stupid.

People most certainly are starving. Our very own moondog is almost out of food as well. Your pro government musings are usually good for a laugh, in this case I wish you’d just cool it whilst we are suffering here. Thanks.

i would like to hear that from moondog myself, or anyone else on the ground, because those people I know in Shanghai are certainly Pissed about the situation, but not going hungry. At least not yet. If they can’t find a solution (aka, living with covid) then it might become darker quite soon, but we aren’t yet where people are literally starving to death in Holodomir-style, as you claim it.

also if you really think my statement is anyhow pro government, you must have a weird understanding of it. The handling of Omicron by the PRC is wrong, full stop.

I think you're arguing about semantics here. People aren't literally starving to death (yet) since it takes a couple of weeks without food to literally starve to death. But one of my friends in SH says that some of her friends are starting to run out of food. That's not "starving" in a literal sense but this word is often used to express "going hungry". When you haven't eaten all day and you say "I'm starving", you aren't even close to starving to death. But an entire global city of people should not ever be going hungry because of a virus unless it's smallpox or something about as deadly.

Quoting that, just to preserve it.

I’m on the ground. Xuhui district, Shanghai. Waiting for my food to arrive for 3 days now.

Apparently there is a way. Someone forwarded a pdf to the WeChat group regarding the details. Basically you need to get approval from your neighbourhood authorities, then book a transfer that takes you to the hospital for the Covid test and finally to the airport.

This is exactly what happened.

I guess UA will bump pax based on status and fare paid.

My friend bought a $2200 W ticket, and got bumped!

Another friend bought a $6600 B ticket, and his reservation seems still intact.

Both have no status. I guess UA will protect GS and 1K, regardless of fares.

I’m sorry for being nosy but I really have to ask. Why would your friends want to come here now? I can’t think of any reason other than perhaps a dying parent or child that would compel me to visit this place now.

I agree. Unless there are PRC nationals returning home to China, no reasons for American to come to China and subject to the stubborn zero tolerence policy. State Department just issued travel alerts to China and HK.

They are both PRC citizens on short term visits to the US. Their visas carry expiration duration of six months.

I am booked on May 8 SFO-PVG and closely watching the situation in Shanghai. It's wait and see for me.

I am aware of State Dept warning about traveling to China, and the story that US Consulate Shanghai marines are running out of fresh food :-)

Yeah, I wouldn't ever willingly walk into a situation where social order is breaking down. I mean, it's one thing if it happens while I am in a certain place, but willingly going in after it happens is another matter.

People are just generally pissed. And then, like in all areas, you have a lot of people who become officers who should never become officers, who are just on a power trip. This officer had ZERO common sense in trying to enforce 2m social distancing between members of the same household. And absolutely deserved to be punched because he made physical contact first:
https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/co...omforting_his/

Then there are the protests over lack of food:

https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/co...d_in_shanghai/
https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/co...ening_tonight/

And how did this happen? (assuming the caption is correct)
https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/co...oor_in_qingpu/

If this is going on all over the city, this might explain things:
https://www.reddit.com/r/shanghai/co...y_force_in_sh/

You're going to barge into people's homes when they're pissed off, short on food, and likely have a short fuse? It's not a reason to push someone off a balcony but you couldn't pay me to do that job right now. Then again, I suspect (just wildly guessing) that this person who was pushed probably was on a power trip similar to the officer in the first video, and the people in that last video. If you are going to try barging into people's homes, you'd better have MAJOR de-escalation training or you are putting your life at risk. And even then, it's probably best to just not do it. Just put a sensor on the door and make sure they don't leave.

Other story I've heard is that it was a suicide. Either way, people are now literally dying because of this stupidity.

A 4-day doubling time means something like half a million cases/day by the end of the month--not that the 20k has anything to do with reality, they're swamped on testing.

Data point on the ground: SIL (Pudong area) got a food package today, vegetable oil/shelf-stable milk/one package of noodles. I would eyeball it (the photograph isn't good enough to read the weight) as a day's calories for the household, but as most of the calories are in the oil that's not going to work too well short of simply drinking it. This is the first package they have received since they were locked down on the 1st. The other SIL (in the city itself) that we are in frequent contact with I believe has likewise received only one package so far.
