The door to HK is still wide-open. As HK just announced its own reopening to non-residents starting 1 May, that provides another avenue for those who want to enter China. Obviously an extra 7 days of quarantine in HK as well as flight ban uncertainties need to be factored in.
(Unless one can already enter China and wants to save on the flight cost in return for additional quarantine time+money expense in HK). |

Assuming "China" means Mainland China and not Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Macau, I have no idea how this helps one enter China.
(Unless one can already enter China and wants to save on the flight cost in return for additional quarantine time+money expense in HK). If they keep the current one PCR test needed rule to enter the mainland from HK, then this is a good option for those looking to save money. |
If that's the actual process, forget HK and hope Taiwan opens with no quarantine in July.

If the HK quarantine is only 7 days I could see this being a viable option for someone who wants to avoid paying $9000 for an economy class ticket and $600 of pre flight testing plus a weeks worth of hotels at the departure city.

Wait until PRC shuts down this and forbids foreign travelers from entering mainland from HK.
It seems they limit foreigners by the visa rules mostly and limit Chinese nationals by the flight rules. Most flights coming to China are filled with mainly returning Chinese citizens I would gather at the moment. So maybe they won’t bother with the foreigner ban from HK, who knows anything these days. |
"The message is quite clear. China wants to shut itself off from the world. I hate this since Ive based my career and life here for the last 20+ years, but its a reality Im beginning to accept.”
Don’t know if you’ve seen this but an economist I follow...the short version is economic growth in China has shifted from exponential to messaging about “common prosperity”. Reading common prosperity as a significant downgrade, harsh lockdowns are a way to abruptly downshift societal expectations https://alhambrapartners.com/2022/04...began-in-2017/ |

It's hard to see how HK can be treated worse than Taiwan. |

Taiwan has had multiple serious outbreaks and China has never done anything to stop/circuit-break flights from there. All you need is a negative pre-departure PCR test.

I'm hearing that case counts in Beijing are increasing. Do people think that there is a risk of an imminent lock down?

Not sure why they're refusing to understand how Omicron works, but this for sure will turn worse and worse and worse if they don't change their approach to it. |

Unless they start to grasp reality, absolutely.

This morning lines in Beijing were long both for testing and to buy food in the supermarkets.

Get out while you still can. My biggest regret is not pulling the trigger on the PVG-SFO flight I had as a backup on March 31. I thought, “how bad could it be”? Now on day 25 of lockdown and it’s much worse than I ever thought.
