Shanghai Copy Malls

Which one is the best for tourist? Where to do the locals go?

I never gone but I have friends coming from abroad and they want to go.

On the list of markets they want to see - designer fashion copies, silk, pearls, electronics, health products & entertainment dvd/music.

Are they separate markets? or is it all that huge one on Nanjing East road. (I hate the place)

That Science and Tech one is what you want...just not where the locals go.

Everyone in there is a laowai looking for cheap stuff...kind of surprised me when I went there a few years ago

Bearing in mind that I am not a shopping fanatic, my favorite approach to Shanghai is to simply walk Changle Road and/or Xingle Road... lots of interesting boutiques there and not super expensive (you do need to bargain).

My friends are envisioning a huge area that is filled with people and lots of junk that they can debate over.

One of them has been to Beijing's Silk Market and he wants to go to something similar.

One of them wants a designer knock off outfit for five bucks. Can't imagine what quality of the outfit is. Stupid tourists.

I'm pretty certain that your dates are a bit off here because a friend who I did not meet until ~2002 was stabbed by a needle there, and I vividly recall accompanying to hospitals and police stations.

I think the place on NJ Road that Ed mentioned in his OP is probably just what the doctor ordered for his guests. As much as I dislike it, it isn't in Pudong, and it has all of the same crap that one finds at Xiushui or Lowu. Speaking of Lowu, I've never been able to knock the prices there down to levels that I'm accustomed to pay in BJ and SH, but I will say that I bought a pair of shoes there nearly a year ago, and they still look/feel nice. Apologies for going OT a bit.
