I'm pretty certain that your dates are a bit off here because a friend who I did not meet until ~2002 was stabbed by a needle there, and I vividly recall accompanying to hospitals and police stations.

I think the place on NJ Road that Ed mentioned in his OP is probably just what the doctor ordered for his guests. As much as I dislike it, it isn't in Pudong, and it has all of the same crap that one finds at Xiushui or Lowu. Speaking of Lowu, I've never been able to knock the prices there down to levels that I'm accustomed to pay in BJ and SH, but I will say that I bought a pair of shoes there nearly a year ago, and they still look/feel nice. Apologies for going OT a bit.
