Do I need a visa to visit Hangzhou?

Attending an academic conference that starts in Hong Kong, but then has 2 days in Hangzhou. Does anyone know if I need a visa for this? If so, if attending academic conference, are there reduced rate visas?

thanks for any help!

You need a visa. There are no reduced rates.

In theory, you could fly HKG-PVG-XXX and take advantage of 48 hour visa free transit (which might get extended during Expo). Also, in the unlikely event you happen to have a passport from a country that has a visa waiver agreement with China (Japan is the only one that comes to mind), you'll be good to go as well.

Good point, might work if you had one of the passports allowed this visa exception (US passport is one of them). It works to/from SHA as well as PVG, I think. So far, I haven't heard of any extensions to the 48 hours for the expo. But if they extended it to, say, 96 hours it would be even useful for a business trip.
