Hangzhou hotels?

Plan to stay only one night in Hangzhou. Which hotel would you recommend? I prefer one that's centrally located, within walking distance to local restaurants and sight seeing locations. Hyatt, Shangri La, or ???

Hyatt

Stayed at the Hyatt last year. Very centrally located. Restaurant is great as well. It is just infront of the lake wheren they have the evening show with lights and stuff. Not very interesting but hey you are just infront of it so worth to have a look

Hyatt is centrally located in business area at around 3 o'clock of the lake, it's a newer property with great pool/health club. Lot's of restaurants around for normal people.

Shangri-la is more secluded in a scenic part of the lake at around 11-12 o'clock. The property is much older so the facilities are not as nice.

For a longer stay I prefer the Shangri-la. But for one night it really doesn't make much difference. The two hotels are about 1 km apart, and since the sights are quite dispersed you will need to take taxis from either one.

BTW, there's also a state guest house at around 8 o'clock, which probably has the best view, it was Mao's residence when he was in Hangzhou. He was there a lot.

if you're interested in something a little cheaper i'd recommend the Crystal Orange. About 60USD a night for a deluxe room with a balcony, and 70 for a suite. It's situated right next to West Lake and a short taxi away from the night market.

Depends on when you are going. The JW Marriott will open in April in the city center. Until then Hyatt or Sofitel would be my choice, Shangi-La and Four Points are too far outside the city for a sightseeing trip. Forget the Chinese business hotels, service and hygiene is terrible 9 out of 10 times.

I love the Shangri-La and its lakeside location. Never felt a compelling need to do too much sightseeing that didn't involve the lake.

I agree with you on service, but I disagree on hygiene.

It all depends on how much you want to spend. If you're willing to shell out 100+ per night and then some for internet, breakfast, etc then I would say the Hyatt (I think they have a 30% sale going on now too). But if you want to spend 1/3rd to half of that then I really recommend Crystal Orange. Check tripadvisors, I believe last time I looked they were the #1 rated hotel in HZ. Good luck and have fun!!

i've stayed at the hyatt, the four points and the shangri la. i actually prefer the hyatt for location, and i LOVE the breakfast buffet. get a seat by the window (they'll try to tell you that section is full, but it never is). highly recommended.

the shangri la is spiffy, but for location, i'm all about the hyatt. (for hotel status and upgrades, we end up staying at the four points, which is lovely, but in the middle of nowhere.)

Hyatt all the way! Shangri-la is ancient and whilst on the west lake as well just way too far from everything else. Hyatt rooms are new (opened in 2005 or so) hence modern luxury piled with best view of west lake in town! I stay there myself 5 times a year on business and its' great to walk by the lake in the hazy mornings!

I stayed at a place called the Regal Plaza, which was about 1 KM from the lake, and quite liked it. I thought it was a legit 4* by international standards and it only cost me around $75 US. But other folks have given it poor reviews on TripAdvisor, I certainly had no problems at all with it.

Any thoughts on this? Considering possibly the Banyan Tree vs Four Seasons vs Hyatt REgency Club suite...
