Should be interesting to find out what has transpired. Who's involved? Indiana FBI office, Secret Service and NW's legal and security departments? I can't imagine that the site went down in advance of the website engine creator getting a little shaken.

NW can't win the "war on boarding passes" unless it quits the print-your-own-boarding process entirely. ;) And even then it'll still not win against those committed to get airside through the checkpoint. What a crock, when it's clear that boarding pass and ID checks to go through the airport security checkpoints provide near ZERO public safety & security.

He may be a Ph.D. candidate but he doesn't seem to have much in the way of an ability to think things through. I sincerely wish that he is in the back of a three hour line of three thousand spring breakers the next time he is denied the right to check in online. May all his vouchers expire before he can actually find available flights. He wins the peachfront prize as jerk of the week. What an embarrassment to the human race. Some people honestly won't be happy until we're all flying on Naked Air.

Ah, I see he was actually posting as I was. Dude, what the heck were you thinking? ID checking is not an important security measure. It is a jobs program. We need to focus on keeping bombs, guns, and other weapons off the airplanes. We do not need to waste time checking IDs and keeping everyone who has been pickpocketed in Paris from being able to fly home. Absolutely no good can come of this. Think, man, think.

This is why the TSA is allowed to keep doing the crap they do. Oh no don't question them, just keep your head down and keep quite while they continue to enact silly "security" measures.

Seriously its time we stop following these silly rules. When you break the stupid ones question them. Why do I have to put this single bottle of colgne in a plastic bag and x-ray it again? They don't have an answer other then "Because I said so". Aparently all travelers are little kids.

I for one will continue to not put my liquids in plastic bags and make security go looking. If they miss it, great. If they find it, I'll continue to ask why.

Unfortunately, the site is down, so I can't look at them.

However, here's the law: trademark only protects against confusing or diluting use in commerce. If it's a personal website and has no commercial component, it's not infringement or dilution.

As he stated in the article on wcco.com, ""Before, any 12-year-old could have done it," Soghoian said on Friday. "Now any 30- or 40-year-old could do it as well."

I couldn't agree more.

I wonder who issued and authorized the written order to remove the boarding pass generator and on what basis such was done. I'm also curious about the process undertaken to remove the website before the website boarding pass creator could do it himself.

When can we expect the FBI to hand out orders to software makers and software customers with software that enable the same results? How about makers and owners of printers too? Maybe those will be so-called national security letters and thus cannot be discussed without risking further government threats.

Boarding pass and ID checks at airports are not security. Doesn't the FBI get that?

Is everyone who has checked out the site now going to be checked out by the FBI too?

Will the FBI question Sen. Schumer and Congressman Markey's staff members too? :D

GUWonder Oct 27, 2006 10:06 pm

Is the FBI going to have a chat with NW about enabling the same too? :D

Michelle Malkin on NWA Boarding Pass Generator

Sorry if this is elsewhere - the new "search" has me a bit flummoxed.

Anyway, Michelle has a extensive article on the latest idiot to build a boarding pass generator.

The money quote on this one is that the guy what wrote it was waiting on legal OK from his university before trying to get through security with it. (She does not mention the Southwest Boarding Pass generator - which is still up!)

And just to prove that he's probably one of the FT'ers we all know and love, he refers to the TSA as "Security Theater." Probably couldn't get the reporter to spell Kabuki.

I gently take her to task over at my guest-blogging gig at Find-The-Boots, but since our readership is in the thousands (cough) and hers is in the millions I'm sure it'll make a big difference. :D

But even though I disagree with her (and many of you) on this particular issue I think it's good that the debate is getting mainstreamed. I mean, we're all just yelling into an echo chamber in flyer land, you know?

SuiJuris Oct 28, 2006 7:22 am

I shudder at the thought of Michelle Malkin being "mainstream."

I'd like to see a hundred more generators up, to highlight this idiocy. (The TSA boarding pass process idiocy - Michelle already does a fine job with her own.)

Mainstream compared to the denizens of FlyerTalk and other similar boards. There are a lot of people who travel, but not so many who travel frequently, and even fewer who hang out here.

I'd take MM over Katie or her ilk anyday.

Michelle Malkin is not mainstream, and certainly less mainstream than the "denizens of Flyertalk"; she's what many consider a wing-nut, and she's gotten her facts wrong before -- as is often enough usual with her. However, even a broken clock shows the right time twice a day. Certainly, she doesn't seem a fan of the TSA as of late. Perhaps becasue they seized some of her makeup? At least she's not swallowing all of the TSA's lines -- at least not hook, line and sinker. :D

And contrary to earlier speculation in your post, he's not a frequent posting FTer; he's a FTer who did this because he wants more "serious" ID and boarding pass checks. That's a position I ridicule since ID checks are not security, not when it comes to travellers.

Anything wrong with posting this material in the main thread about this topic and continuing the discussion there? Here:
