Plastic Knife Confiscated!

I needed to get to PDX so I took B6's flight.

I knew that I was going to need something to eat, so I brought a chicken gyro near
my house.

I had this wrapped up in a bag with a plastic fork, plastic knife, and a fruit bowl.

As my carry-on was going through security they stopped the belt. They looked at my bag through the screen, and asked me to step aside. They took my bag to a table, and started going through it.

They told me that I was not allowed to bring a plastic knife through security!!!

I told them that I was, because I could get one on the airside of the terminal at a food place, or if I was flying Delta I could get one on the plane!!!!

Mr. I have the Power wouldn't give up, and took my freaking plastic knife away!!

I asked for a supervisor, and he told me that I would have to wait. I waited for five minutes, but no one came. I decided just to leave b/c my flight was already boarding.

What the f*** is wrong with security?

Couple of things are wrong with our security:

1. Moron Mineta banned all knives (something I'd expect a gaggle of PTA moms to come up with, not aviation experts) on about September 13, 2001 - that ridiculous action set us up for a truly infantile scheme of Kabuki Theatre rather than true security. The TSA has since relaxed the restrictions on some knives (plastic, metal roundbladed and butter) but still hasn't removed the infantile taint of the mental midget Moron Mineta from the rules.

2. Security is now handled by Sen Daschle's federalized professionals; I'll leave to you any opinion about the professionalism of your knife-thief.

That's what's wrong with aviation security.

You should take an AF flight- TATL in coach they serve you a meal with metal tableware, including a knife with a 2-1/2" blade. (about 6 cm). I think it's just AF's elegant way of saying what they think of the TSA.

You should've gone to the food court gotten a couple of knives and brought them back to the security guy and told him that you found some more in the terminal

I have not been thru MEM recently, but I always wonder: what do the two rib restaurants Corkeys and Interstate use to carve up the slabs these days? A plastic knife with a 2 inch blade? Does TSA at MEM allow them to have a real knife? Is it chained to the wrist of an armed security guard to keep it from being stolen by you know whos? Just wondering.

They are allowed to use real knives in the kitchens, just like repairmen (plumbers, electricians, etc.) are allowed to use real tools. The people using them are known, and they are held accountable for what they bring through the checkpoint.

The serious knives I've seen in airside food preparation areas were all chained to something really solid.

I'd have gone over to the food court and picked up a few plastic knives, and then walked back to security, found the same guard and askes if he wanted any more to add to his collection

EDIT: just noticed that Palal has already suggested above exactly what I suggested. Oops!!

I'm telling you, you're just asking for a terminal dump.

My favorite is having every cubic inch of the contents of my rollaboard searched dilligently by a TSA Officer, then walking into an Outback Steak House in the sterile area to eat a steak with a big, sharp, shiny steak knife!

I would have stabbed him with it and let him see how silly it is.

Actually, if I was the screener, i would have confiscated the OP's gyros. Those things can be dangerous!
