PreCheck lanes are faster and more convenient than standard security lanes, something that hasn't changed with the ability of standard lane travelers to keep their shoes on. And so long as PreCheck travelers are able to keep more of their things in their bags (laptops, tablets, etc.), I don't see this changing.

They accept Precheck at YYZ and YUL airports (YYZ even actively directed me to it when I attempted to enter the normal line because I was not looking for Precheck signage since I was outside of the US). Between that and the mobile passport control app I'm not sure how much time GE would really save me. Depending on your travel patterns and how big of a pain getting to a GE interview location is for you, Precheck might just be a better fit even though GE only cost marginally more.
One point that is worth mentioning, GE contains Pre, so it may make it worth it for someone that is not 100% on how much differing external travel they will have.

It's a solvable problem, if there is desire. And frankly its a bit arrogant/naive to believe that our security in the US is somehow the best in the world. Frankly, TSA has been caught with their pants down countless times over the years and I think most savvy travelers acknowledge that its mostly security theater.

I'd venture to say that the lack of trust is more common than not, world-wide.

Some of this is due to airport configurations or a difference in security rules between domestic and international flights. For instance, you mentioned LHR, which would be difficult to operate one stop security at scale. There are some limited flights with one stop security with AA and BA. In Australia, the international and domestic terminals are often physically separate (and there are fewer restrictions on domestic flights, such as liquids), so domestic to international travelers must be rescreened.

At least as of March 2025 when I flew YYC-AMS-KRK there was no additional security check at AMS after arriving from Calgary. (Good thing, since my inbound was late and I had to run to make my flight. Luckily clearing Schengen immigration was quick.)

I flew GRB-MSP-AMS-FLR at the end of April 2026 and there was no security check at AMS, only passport control.
